Bad Beatles Songs I'm a huge fan, but even I must admit some of their stuff isn't pure genius.
Lovely Rita--I used to assume this was good--it's on Sgt. Pepper, after all--and it starts off very good. The classic opening guitar line, and the beautiful "aaahhh" are better than some artists' whole catalogs. But it's all downhill from there. It's a silly subject with weak lyrics forced into average music. It's a steady descent right to the last line "give us a wink and make me think of YOUUUUU!" yech. And from their first album, Ask Me Why isn't terrible musically, but it sounds like John is making up the lyrics as he goes along. "I love you, woo woo woo wooo 'cause you tell me things I want to know. And it's true woo woo woo wooo that it really only goes to show, That I know, That I, I, I, I should never, never, never be blue." and we we we should go to the mo mo mo vie show long long ago these lyrics blow [Edited 5/5/06 13:47pm] My Legacy

no band is perfect. The stones had bad songs, so did cream, so did every single other band. perfection is achievable only by the gods

Sounds like you don't like that style, but I think She Loves You is a perfect pop song. Great melody, actually kind of original lyrics--letting someone else know that a girl still loves them is not something you hear in a song every day. My Legacy

the performance of "Slow Down" is probably their worst, in my opinion. It's horrible... murky sound, out of key. The piano fades in and out... Just bad.
Matchbox is awful, too. Dizzy Miss Lizzy... Bad Boy.... all pretty lame. Long and Winding Road has some terrible bass playing (by John). although, to be fair, it wasn't intended as a final product. Yer Blues has a jarringly bad edit. Your Mother Should Know is a downright lazy song, with unfinished lyrics and no bridge (and it also changes tempo as it goes along). Only a Northern Song is a waste of vinyl. So is All Together Now. I Wanna Be Your Man is a terrible performance. Maxwell's Silver Hammer is just horrifically awful. OK i think those are my least faves

Only A Northern Song never really did it for me either.

some of their early stuff can get on my nerves because it sounds so samey and naive and at times some of the songs even sound like commercial jingles, but in all honesty, i can find something to enjoy in any beatles song i hear, even if it's just a by-product of growing up with all that music and having good memories attached to the songs.

The early stuff is my favorite. Much like Prince. Some say Dirty Mind is their favorite, some Lovesexy. I like early Beatles, but it's like 2 seperate bands. Hard Days Night is highly underrated IMO. It's the closest to a solo John Lennon Album the Beatles ever did, and it's their best early album. My Legacy

Yeah, how is the guy who created that going to say Revolution 9 isn't right for the album? That should have been left for the Anthologies. I'm not crazy about (regular) Honey Pie either, but at least it's a song. [Edited 5/5/06 13:44pm] My Legacy

I'd say they're somewhat saved by their mediocre aspirations. Actually a lot of people love Rocky Raccoon. I like you Know My Name because when they get to that baby talk section I think "they really covered just about all the bases!" [Edited 5/5/06 14:36pm] My Legacy

Well I personally like the vast majority of Beatles' songs, I even like George's indian songs and paul's crooner songs and don't get why so many people always target those particular two types for their criticism. I prefer their later stuff to their older stuff, but I don't hate their early period. I could also put in a word of defense for almost every song listed in this thread (although that's not necessary), but I can't stand most of their early covers (with the exception of the really stellar ones like roll over beethoven and twist and shout). The early stuff is my favorite. i'm sure i'll get tired of the later stuff one day and gravitate back to the early stuff, because that's what i liked best when i was a little kid, so it's not like i ALWAYS disliked it. but for me, typically, my favorite beatles stuff starts with 'rubber soul' and goes on to 'let it be'.

ooh I love those! I love their early stuff. I feel like it really takes me back to an era where I wasn't even born yet. I feel like I was "there" somehow when I hear these songs. I can't really explain it, but I do feel a strong connection to their ealry stuff. Co-sign! "Rocky Raccoon" is a great song. I guess "Revolution 9" doesn't count because you said "songs." I loathe "Yellow Submarine"! I couldn't even dream of calling Revolver their best album with that crap on it. For some unknown reason, I can't stand "Can't Buy Me Love." That has to be their most overrated song. There are others, but I'll stop there. I'm the only person in the world who loves "Maxwell's Silver Hammer." Dammit, that song is funny!
