Prince vs. Stevie Pt. 2: 3121 or A Time 2 Love?

There were a lot of positive review here on the .org when Stevie's new one came out. Now that we've got 3121, how would you compare? Especially from those of you who give an edge to Stevie overall as a musician.

My opinion? I like that Prince's isn't too long--Stevie's overstayed it welcome a bit on the length tip. But I like that Stevie used more live musicians and less synths, and I also, for the most part, like Stevie's lyrics a bit better. But although I give Stevie the edge as a musician, I'd have to say I think 3121 is the stronger CD--but not by much.

Thoughts?

Prince is a bad boy, but A Time 2 Love trumps 3121 in so, so many ways... It's almost an unfair comparison.

Lyrically, vocally, instrumentally, collaboratively -- Stevie came with it much harder than Prince, this time around.

well I think they're both pretty strong albums. I think 3121 is tighter, but it does have some tracks that sound too synthesized, and black sweat is just grating to me. A Time To Love has some great tracks, and there's a very refreshingly stately quality to some of them, but a lot of the love songs come dangerously close to schmaltz/muzak. In both cases I think the last song is the best one. I will say also that, like musicology, 3121 does kind of seem like a sampler of typical prince formulas, but Time 2 Love doesn't really break too much new ground either. i guess basically I can't make up my mind. lol

I like both of them, but I think 3121 is better than A Time 2 Love.

A Time 2 Love has two classics while 3121 only has one.

A time to love was technically a good album, but the songs just sound dull. He needs to stop recording, its just not gonna happen for stevie anymore. And i LOVE STEVIE!

3121. A Time to Love sounds too contemporary, although Stevie sounds great as expected. 3121 is much a more solid experience for me nod

O.K., maybe this is comparing apples to oranges, but since there is a thread over in the Prince forum that is discussing the production and engineering of 3121--how would you compare the quality of sound of 3121 to A Time 2 Love? On that one, I'd say Stevie's wins.

No contest- 3121.

I'm a Stevie Wonder fan, and I've only listened to A Time 2 Love once. neutral

This is kind of a non-answer.

I bought AT2L immediately on the day it hit. I've been to the same store 3 times and still haven't bought 3121 (heck it was on sale too!).

Not being negative, just unexcited.

I mean in a battle like this, you really have to look at the quality and production of these two superb albums. Stevie's A Time 2 Love production sounded fresh and has near-top quality because it's not really built up fully on synthesizers nor computer engineered instruments (even though Stevie plays most of the keyboards here)- there are real drums, bass, guitars, piano, and even horns on throughout the record. Prince's 3121, on the other hand, still had a slightly computer-generated production just like albums like Emancipation and Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, but it's still more tight, production-wise and structurally. It's mostly near-top quality also (kind of like The Rainbow Children).

A Time 2 Love had about three weak tracks and it was kinda overlong (clocking over 78 minutes), but it showed that Stevie is still a strong force popular music and most of the songs are just mighty. I can't really vote strongly right now, but 3121 still gets the acclaim from me.

Is "A Time 2 Love" the latest album with the song "What's The Fuss"? I like that particular song but when I read (right here on the org) that the album was mostly ballads or midtempo songs, I saw no reason to buy it. I never buy an album for just one song unless it's a jam that I absolutely can't live without. That's why I have far more 45s and 12 Inches from back in the day than albums.
