You can give the dancer credit to MJ over P, but MJ hasnt given a new dance step since Billie Jean....

And let me say I am not impressed at all with MJ's new dance steps during Billie Jean era.
I grew up watching neighborhood dance troops pop-locking as early as '75, 76,
Just before breakdancing came out. The moonwalk was then called the slide, and after that was called the electric boogaloo. Watch Shabba Doo on the movie I think is called "Breakdance".
MJ just copied the boyz in the hood dance steps then brought it to white/commerical America and everybody thinks he is a genius. rolleyes
A regular Pat Boone if you ask me.

You lost me here. Get it straight, the moonwalk is one Michael move. Over the course of a 2 hour concert he'll probably spend 12 seconds doing it. While you're at it, he also took the side glide from street dancers and the jumping on the toes thing from The Nicholas Brothers. In each case he improved and personalised them, but it's beside the point anyway. His general style, the poses, the attitude, was A COMPLETELY NEW THING, and that, as much as the music, was the reason he became the phenomenon he did in the 80s. Now of course when it comes to everything else(except maybe singing) Prince kicks his ass, but credit where credit's due.

The credit I give MJ is for being a performer who can dance very well on stage while singing. But he doesn't create, only recreate with more pizzazz.
Like I said, I regular Pat Boone.

Also, I would say that Prince is one of the best guitarist out there now... not best singer who plays the guitar, or best songwriter who also plays the guitar... he is the best PERIOD! I think 50 years from NOW, Prince's name will be on the list of 10 best guitarist.
Is Michael Jackson the best dancer??? Period?? Is he the best singing voices?? before you answer consider Luther Vandross (RIP), Marvin Gaye, Roy Orbison, Steven Tyler, Elvis Presley.

Do you think as a vocalist, Michael Jackson stands out from among those??

See MJ fans will go on about MJ's dancing abilities because he is in a class by himself, to be able to dance that well, and sing, and perform. But he is not at the top of any class, except record sales. Not the top dancer, now singer, nor songwriter, or instrumentalist... he is the package deal. That takes a person with talent to take a little from this and a little from that and come up with the whole package... but that does not take a genuis to borrow from this and that and make it better.

Let's be clear. Prince is my favourite artist of all time, closely followed by Bob Dylan, but even I can see that you are seriously selling MJ short. Top dancer? Tell me who is. He's certainly the best dancer ever seen in the music business, and a true original in that area, regardless of whether he took a move here or a move there. Has Prince never stolen a guitar lick or a bass line? According to most bandmembers he used to do it all the time. In the case of Do Me Baby he took the whole song. Does that mean he's any less of an original? Only if you have a very limited understanding of creativity. As far as singing goes, here's another area where your anti Jacko prejudice completely skews your judgement. Either that or you don't know much. Michael's voice, his tone, his phrasing, his ad libs are one of a kind, and don't even get started on his range which is simply phenomenal. You speak of Steve Tyler and Elvis Presley as great singers. Elvis's voice was fine, but if he were black you would never have heard of him. The Clyde McPhatters and Jackie Wilsons of this world would have had him for breakfast. As for Steve Tyler I won't even bother responding.

Be careful here. This is big time hyperbole. While it is well documented that prince lifted the jam for Do Me Baby no one has ever contended that he took the whole song- implying everything including the lyrics were lifted.
Furthermore, and far more importantly, nobody ever accused him of stealing parts all the time. What has been said by some band members is they would jam all the time and the lines sometimes got blurred on who came up with what. That's a far cry from knowlingly lifting ideas without credit all the time.

Actually, I was trying to find singers who weren't black in case you hadn't heard of Sam Cooke, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Nat King Cole.

I had to ask my husband of good rock singers... because I am not that familiar with GOOD rock vocalists. But I do know that MJ would never be ranked among those singers.

I don't think I am short changing MJ at all. He is a great performer. Even his TV appearances are awesome. However, I don't think he should even be considered comparable to Prince, who is an innovator in music. a standard for musicians to try to achieve.
MJ... get the best producer, the hottest celebrity musicians (guitarist, keyboardists) the best songwriters, the best choregrapher/dance coach and put out an cd. That is what Britney, Jessica, and Ashley does.

VOCALS
-----
Michael Jackson - Great voice, since he was 10, has been singing with the best of them. 10/10
Prince - Great voice, nice range, many different styles. 9/10

DANCING
-----
Michael Jackson - Only competition is James Brown 10/10
Prince - Good dancer, but nothing great 7/10

INSTRUMENTAL
-----
Michael Jackson - I believe Mike is an underrated musician. Growing up with music around he, he was bound to pic up something. Mike actually started out as the J5’s conga/bongo player, before Randy. Plays keyboards, bass, guitar, drums and percussion. 6/10
Prince - Great instrumentalist, not many in the music industry can mess with him (not just 2006, but of All-Time) 10/10

SONG-WRITING & PRODUCTION
-----
Michael Jackson - Mike has wrote hits for the himself, Jacksons, his sisters and other many artist. 8/10
Prince - Great songwriter, he makes you think 10/10

STAGE
-----
Michael Jackson - I was in amazement when I saw the Motown audition tape, he was 9, nuff said. 10/10
Prince - Not only does he dance, he plays 43 instruments on stage, fan interaction, great band 10/10

SALES and CHARTS
-----
Michael Jackson - This guy has been on the charts since 1969, 13# 1‘s in US and 20 worldwide, (that’s just solo). He made Thriller … Thriller 10/10
Prince - He sales, but not as much as Mike, but still big numbers 7/10

MUSIC VIDEOS
-----
Michael Jackson - MTV named an award after him. He videos are legendary. (Can You Feel It was ahead of its time, yet is never mentioned with great vids) 10/10
Prince - His videos are good, but nothing groundbreaking 5/10

FILM & ACTING
-----
Michael Jackson - Mikes films and acting are underrated. He was good in Wiz and Moonwalker and Ghost. But don’t forget his TV Show and Specials from the 70’s 7/10
Prince - Purple Rain is a Rock classic. Sign O the Times was good. Cherry Moon was OK and GB … 8/10

INFLUENCE
-----
Michael Jackson - Mike has been influencing artist since 1971 (Osmonds anyone) to New Edition to Usher to Omarion to Pharrell. I just saw a Chris Brown video and said, “I seen that choreography before” 10/10
Prince - Prince has a bigger influence then he gets credit for. From all to Neo-Soul artist to top producers like Timbaland to a rapper like 2Pac, it’s everywhere. 10/10

HOW THEY STAND TODAY
-----
Michael Jackson - People love Mike’s music, but do they love him. Some can’t stand him, while others still adore him as if it’s still 1984. 6/10
Prince - Prince stands alright with me today. Last year when I was in school, people talked about his music a lot. Peoples respect him a whole lot, even though he’s weird. 8/10

TOTAL
-----
Michael Jackson - 87/100
Prince - 84/100

Prince comes up just shy of MJ.
PRINCE: Always and Forever
MICHAEL JACKSON: Always and Forever

Prince is a great dancer. Prince has done the splits with ease many times. And many other amazing moves. Watch the Baby I'm A Star performance on Purple Rain. Watch the Housequake performance on Sign O' The Times. HIS only competition is James Brown.

[b]INSTRUMENTAL
-----
Michael Jackson - I believe Mike is an underrated musician. Plays keyboards, bass, guitar, drums and percussion. 6/10

Do you have a picture. Any proof? I've never seen Mike actually play an instrument. If he can then why doesn't he on tour, in videos or on his albums?

SONG-WRITING & PRODUCTION
-----
Michael Jackson - Mike has wrote hits for himself, the Jacksons, his sisters and other many artist. 8/10

What hits has Mike wrote for his sisters? Ever heard of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis? Which hits did he write of his own? What many other artists has Mike wrote hits for?

This debate has been going on for many years. The two artist come from different backgrounds.

Let me remind someone of one fact when they Michael Jackson is a "spent force". I think you all would agree with me in saying that when Prince was just getting his debut album off the ground, Michael Jackson already had 6 No.1 Hits to his credit and had released 16 albums with the Jacksons. He and his brothers had already carried out 7 successful world tours. They had already sold between 50-75 million albums worldwide. Michael Jackson was a musical force before Prince released his first album. Michael Jackson had already been a musical prodigy 10 years before Prince. Michael Jackson has been in the music industry for nearly 40 years.

The two artist reigned the 80's generation. However, Michael Jackson was the absolute artist. By then end of the 1990's Michael Jackson had sold nearly 3x's more albums worldwide than Prince. Michael Jackson also had twice as many No. 1 hits than Prince, in the U.S. and overseas (U.K., Brazil, Japan, ect...)

Michael Jackson is a musical talent. Michael Jackson has always said he could not read music or sight read a master piece of music, however, give him a cord to sing and he will sing it. Many of you think that Michael Jackson goes into a studio completely blind as to what he wants to create, which is so far from the truth. Michael Jackson's vision of his music is shaped by his producers and himself whom ever they maybe.

Michael Jackson has a wonderful body of work that many believe to be great music that will span a lifetime. Alot of Michael Jackson's songs have very complexed sound effects and futuristic and innovative that alot is created by Michael Jackson's skill as a beat boxer. Which only few artist actually are able to do. Alot of his beats he creates are done on the beat box.

(I'VE GOT TO DEFEND MICHAEL JACKSON... I'M SO TIRED OF PEOPLE JUST DISMISSING HIM)

Michael Jackson is a pop artist that creates music for the masses. You ask the average person to name 5 Prince album most of them could not tell you. You ask the average person walking down the street to name 5 Michael Jackson albums they will tell you. Prince is known only for Purple Rain and Musicology to the this generation of fans. However, Michael Jackson is known for every solo album he has released, because he creates music for the time. That is what seperate the two artist.

Agreed, Prince is a much more electic musican, but don't dismiss Michael Jackson as being just the same. Michael Jackson is also held to a much higher stand than Prince, believe it or not. When Michael Jackson released Invincible is sold respectfully 2.5 million copies in the U.S. and estimated 10 million worldwide, the industry called it a flop. Prince released Musicology and everyone called it a commercial comeback. The double standard is clear.

Michael Jackson has remained he hates to tour, because it is grueling in the body. If Michael Jackson needed a source of income Michael Jackson could easily go on tour and make just as much or more than Prince.

I've been to a Michael Jackson concert 4 times and I've been to a Prince concert. They are both awesome performers. However, Michael Jackson sets stadiums on fire with electricity. Prince for me gave me the best musical experience of my life. I became a new fan after seeing him in concert for the first time.

My point is Michael Jackson is a spent force only because he wants to be a spent force. His personal life has not made him incapable of creating good music. Michael Jackson and Prince both are great artist who will be remembered throughout time. They are two artist with completely different walks of life. Michael Jackson was built up and tore down to literally nothing. He has been vilified and dismissed as if he never existed or gave this world some of the most memorable pop hits of our generation. Michael Jackson has nothing to prove to anyone because before there was Michael Jackson not many (only one comes to mind...) artist even stood or stand on his level. You can say Michael brought it on himself, but noone no matter what they do in thier person time, deserves the kind of treatment the American media has submitted Michael Jackson to in the past years.

Unforunately,

Michael Jackson's legacy will only be remember once he has past away and that is a shame, because we will be wishing for a prodigy like Michael Jackson to reignite music.

Prince has his style and Michael Jackson has his style. I'm sure the two artist have great respect for each other.

He shouldn't be dismissed as just spent energy as if he has come and gone. He is still here and none of us know what he has left in him. His musical prowess just doesnt go away. He has a gift that was given to him from God and he will use it at his own time and place.

Prince has the same option...

Thank you SOOOOO much for this.

Even if we give Prince the benefit of the doubt here, all you have to do is trawl through some 70s funk records to see that he has "borrowed" an awful lot over the years. Did Prince invent the splits? Has anyone else noticed how similar his guitar sound is to Carlos Santana? They even pull the same faces when playing. The point is, saying "it does not take a genius to borrow from this and that and make it better" kind of misses the point of Prince's whole career and is a bit of an own goal when trying to criticise MJ.

Stolen and borrowing are very different. I'm not going to get into a discussion of their difference. That should be known.

If you properly go through my second post on this page you'll see that's more or less the point I was making. By the way, although I didn't want to get diverted onto trivia, some P bandmembers did specifically say that Prince would directly take ideas that came up in jam sessions and use them without credit. I can't remember the exact quote but it was along the lines of "He had stretched himself so thin with all these side projects and though it's hard to keep track of ideas in jam sessions after a while he did start to do it knowingly".

Prince is a great dancer. Prince has done the splits with ease many times. And many other amazing moves. Watch the Baby I'm A Star performance on Purple Rain. Watch the Housequake performance on Sign O' The Times. HIS only competition is James Brown.

[b]Do you have a picture. Any proof? I've never seen Mike actually play an instrument. If he can then why doesn't he on tour, in videos or on his albums?

Thanks for this. Haven´t heard about lots of songs on this list. Gotta get them somehow.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Yo...I'm an oldschool MJ head...In his prime dude had the goods...but showing publicity shots of MJ on intsruments, proves very little of his musicianship...Seriously...Find some video...I don't think MJ needs that kind of help...In his prime he was the greatest entertainer...no need to make the man into Stevie Wonder...

As for songwriting credits, writing a song and co-writing a song is to different things...A lot of the songs you have listed were only co-written by MJ...Again...no need to make out MJ to be something that he's not...He was great as it is.....

1980 Minnie Ripperton” “I‘m In Love Again” (Co-written with Minnie...)
1980 LaToya Jackson: “Night Time Lover” Written/Produced
1980 Brothers Johnson: “This Had To Be” Written (Co-written by MJ)
1981 Carole Bayer Sager: “Just Friends” Produced (Co-Produced by MJ)
1982 Diana Ross: “Muscles” Written/Produced #10/4 US
1983 Paul McCartney: “The Man” Both (Co-Written with Paul; Produced by George Martin)
1984 Rebbie Jackson: “Centipede” #24/4 US
1984 Rebbie Jackson: “Come Alive It's Saturday Night” Written/Produced
1984 Janet Jackson: “Don‘t Stand Another Chance” # 9 RnB
1985 Johnny Mathis: “Love Never Felt So Good” (co-written with Mathis)
1985 Greg Phillinganes: “Behind the Mask”
1985 USA for Africa: “We Are the World” (Co-Written with Lionel Richie)
1985 Jennifer Holliday: “You’re The One (co-written by MJ)
1985 Diana Ross: “Eaten Alive” #77/10 US Written/Produced
1988 Deniece Williams: “Just Friends”
1990 Ralph Tresvant: “Alright Now” (Co-written with MJ)
1991 Safire: “I Never Heard”
1994 BlackStreet: “Joy” #43/12 - US Written (Great song...very underrated!!!)
1995 3T: “Why” #112/71 - Produced (?)
1995 3T: “Words Without Meaning” Produced (?)
1997 The Simpsons: “Happy Birthday Lisa” Written (Come on...u joking right???)
1998 J-Friends: “Children’s Holiday” Written/Produced (?)
1998 Rebbie Jackson “Fly Away” Written/Produced (?)
1999 J-Friends: “People of the World” Written/Produced (?)

MJ is a capable writer...but there's no need to inflate his outside work with other artists...MJ doesn't need the help...

Thanks for posting this list. I'm an old school Prince head so I didn't know what Mike wrote or co-wrote. You've just given a Prince fam more respect for Mike now.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.
