Who the hell is Rufus Wainwright?

I saw a show where a gay couple loved him and he sent them a wedding message during their ceremony and they were pising in their pants and I'm like "Who is he?" Apparantly he's an openly gay singer but I have no idea what genre he sings. Anyone here a fan of his who can tell me if he's ever been played on the radio and what his greatest hits have been?

No radio hits, as far as I know, but he's pretty popular with his cult. I like him, but he's definitely best in small doses, voice is VERY...err...expressive. Music is all over the place, a mixture of Radiohead-like rock and more folky and cabaret type stuff. His debut album is the most accessible, in my opinion...it's more straightforward piano rock.

i like his second album "poses" quite a bit. not so big on the first one, and 'want one' has a couple of good songs, i s'pose. not entirely my cuppa tea, but i don't mind him.

not at all. rufus can write his own music and play piano, and even when his music is a little bit on the dull side, at least it's pretty classy sounding.

not to mention at least rufus has the cojones to be out of the closet.

LOVE him. To me, his music is in the vein of 70's singer songwriters sent through a classical filter. He's a great live performer. I've seen him live a few times, including once at the Hollywood Bowl with the L.A. Philharmonic.

His voice can sound whiny, and I know PLENTY of people who are not fans.
let me come over it's a beautiful day to play with you in the dark

he is a good artist.. yeah he is openly gay and all that.. he is pretty comfortable artist in that.. but above his sexuality.. he is a great musician...

Want 1 and 2 are brilliant work.

and I love his duet of george michaels "I'm Never Gonna Dance Again" or whatever its called.. he did a duet with Ben Folds.. hilarious and great..

catch his shows..

rufus is damn good!

a singer/songrwriter/musician (piano and guitar), he's been making music since he was a kid, including operas. he's "fluent" in classical as well as pop, folk, rock. his last record left me wanting more (no pun intended) but it still had some great highlights. poses, his 2nd lp, is probably my favorite but i really enjoy his debut, self titled cd as well as want one. as any self respecting homosexual should be, rufus is the ideal host and his live show is a fun time! He knows how to entertain a group with music, stories, and laughs; i could only imagine what a cocktail party of his must be like.

check his music out and see what you think!

Check out his track 'Spotlight on Christmas' for some different festive cheer this holiday season thumbs up!

I think Rufus is great. I was totally addicted to Want One for ages. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed an album so much... probably not since prince back in '92.

Ive just got into his stuff. Mainly Poses and Want One, the latter i believe to be his strongest stuff. His many soundtrack contributions are also worth checking out too. If you can find his cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and Instant Pleasure from the Big Daddy soundtrack, they're both brilliant.

biggrin Rufus is fantastic- Me and some friends are going to see him live next Thursday-YAY!!!
Start with his self-titled first album and then follow on to the next and so on...
it's great to hear the progress in his music and lyrics.

Same here.

I bought Rufus' debut album on the basis that if he has any of his dad's talent then he's worth listening to, but it doesn't do anything for me, the album reminds me of early David Gray - too much whine and angst.

I haven't bought any other Rufus albums, and I haven't heard anything that would make me want to, although some of his live perfromances have been pretty good - but not as good as his dad!

I'll always buy new Loudon albums though.
Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

but why is he so inarticulate when he sings? I can't tell what the fuck he's talking about. I mean, i could hear a "cock" or a "twink" here and there, but other than that i don't get it.
