"Hung Up" is my favorite as a single. "Nothing Fails" is my favorite of those songs.

"Music" was what got me into her.

So, it's "Music," followed closely by "Hung Up" and "Don't Tell Me."

I think I'll go with the 3 above and pick Hollywood as my fave single. I, too, agree it really should have been a hit. I know someone who doesn't even like Madonna but absolutely loved that track.

Honorable mention to Love Profusion, too. I think the video is great.

Lyrically, it's a toss-up for me between "American Life" and "Hollywood", but since the latter has the better hooks I'll cast my vote there.

It is a crime, but not surprising. The core message of this song (that you've been manipulated by popular culture) does not sit well with most people, as it would mean actually having to do some - God forbid! - critical thinking! Why would you want to get involved in all that messy stuff when you can listen to Coldplay sing about how the stars shine for your boyfriend or girlfriend. rolleyes

What year is "Human Nature" from? That is a kick-ass lyric.

1.Music
2.Hung Up
3.Don't Tell Me
4.Die Another Day
5.Sorry

I left out the songs from American Life because none of them were good singles(though as songs they were good). Hollywood was the most commercial single off the album, which isn't saying much since it was also a bit off the mainstream.

1. Music
2. Die another day

These are the only songs that really caught my attention and appreciation. But I haven't heard the new album yet. This first single (don't know what it is called) I don't like at all.

This would be my list:

1.What it Feels Like for a Girl
2.Music
3.Sorry

Looking at my top three here though, if I took the top three singles of hers from the 80s or the 90s, they would totally slaughter this list. But I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, because there is still 5 years left in this decade.

Disagree. Musically, it had all the earmarks of a monster single. Replace the lyrics with thoughts that don't scare anybody (e.g. "Music makes the people come together") and it would have charted a lot higher.

This may be a bit of an overstatement, but the fact that "Hollywood" wasn't a massive #1 confirms for me that we, as a society, are doomed. Just a bit, though.

I don't get it either. If anything from that album was destined to be a hit, "Hollywood" was it.

This song was not a big hit for the same reason Springsteen's Human Touch and Lucky Town albums were not big hits: it asks people to question the fairy tales that make them think happiness is as simple as Hollywood portrays it (or, equally as sad, that becoming a celebrity is a ticket to a happily-ever-after). These notions do not sit well with the dim-witted masses that make up the majority of record-buyers (that's if they even understood it in the first place - they generally can't process anything more complex than "I Will Always Love You").

I like Madonna but I thought that song was crappy until her current producer Stuart Price remixed it.

Peaches was approached to remix "Hollywood" and she said no because "it's such a bad song" (her words).

it took me FOREVER to warm up to that song. but i remember driving in mexico one day with it on the c.d. player and i had just gotten stoned (random i know) and the guitar samples mixed with the chorus and her vocal effects...i LOVE it! so catchy and such original production from mirwais. i know a lot of folk who dig this song. i think it's an amazing track that takes a long time to discover, you don't get it on first listen.

definitely "Music" headbang

but if "Get Together" becomes a single in 2006 (as rumored),that will easily become my new favorite Madonna single of the 2000s.
