217K seems a rather low figure for an artist of Madonna's stature to be selling.
No matter - another #1 album is always healthy.
The album gets better with every listen IMO - love it.

Is that a low # in the UK? Doesn't seem like it.

It's higher than ROL's debut, so it's not low at all.

well she deliberately set out to create maximum sales with this cd. It didnt sell because its brilliant, imo its worse than american life. It sold because its received probably the most promotion i've ever seen for any artist in the UK. Its advertised on tv literally every 10mins, its everywhere. In light of this i think it is a low number, considering robbie managed almost 300,000 in his first week and michael jackson managed 222,000 with Number Ones even after he was arrested.

Yeah but it may be good sales for Madonna - who I don't think has ever been a huge seller - just a steady seller.
How many Madonna cds have debuted at #1 in the UK?

Robbie is huge in the UK (for whatever reason...)

MJ has always sold more than Madonna not fair to match them up.
And any form of publicity for MJ sells his records, negative usually puts his sales through the roof.
He didn't sell good when he was found innocent with the Essential MJ collection.

according to Billboard and a few other sources; no one sells the amount of records they use to. with download this and digital that, etc...big sales are now considered in the thousands as oppse to millions overall.

In the UK 300, 000 in first week sales is comparable to 500, 000 in the States...It's the same way with platinum certification; it really doesn't take that much to go platinum in the UK when compared to the States...

But you still have to give it up to the old broad; she's 25 years in the game and is still relevant...

That seems strange to me, cuz there are nearly 5 times as many people in the US.

question. when madonna looks like a mother people say why does she dress like that we want our slutty Madonna back. When she dresses like a pop star people wanna her to "dress her age." ie prince music and more forum. are people ever going to happy with one look? are they jealous? do they think the matronly look goes with promoting a pop album? does looking slutty go with promoting a children's book? am i missing something?

This has been turned into a Madonna sticky, let's try to keep it on the album.

I think Madge looks great. I am SO envious. And "jay" thanks for the kind words on the other thread. I think it was locked though. But MOST IMPORTANTLY, I'm just really loving Confessions. For me that is a huge statement coz I've never been much of a Madonna fan, but I have a friend who is trying her best to convert or to make a MADONNA fan out of me!! lol lol

I'm very happy for Madge. Now if only Janet could do the same thing. I hope that Janet comes out with something great. I really want the best for my girl.
Then there is Prince. But Prince is Prince, so for some reason, I never worry about him. For me, Prince will always be amazing.

heres my deal...in the past her looks seemed to grow from her own style at the time..but lately her styles seem to be more like work clothes. she "creates" these persona's only when she is pushing her albums. and she puts on a "mother" image whenever she pushes a book. i think thats why people think its forced.

motherhood is not a kiss of death...look at bjork and kate bush..they do wonderful jobs of integrating this new sense into their art. madonna hasnt been as successful. but to madges credit aint nobody been able to pull of a "party" vibe like her. she is her best when she is having fun.
Space for sale...

maybe the party girl is still the real her, but she's trying to tone it down.

Madonna should always be the hugest. Things aren't right in the world when she's not.
