I said that a few months ago and I still agree! It's been an exceptionally good year.

I've been loving the Hold Steady, Gorillaz, Supersystem, Silver Jews, Kate Bush, Bright Eyes, Sujan Stevens, Martha Wainwright, Pernice Brothers, Cardigans, Blackalicious, and liking lots more.

Not a great year for hip-hop or R&B, imo, though.

When I first heard that it was going to have a lot of guest artists, I was extremely sceptical, but I was amazed that it doesn't feel like a superstar duet album. It feels like Buddy all the way. It's Buddy a little laid back and into the R&B groove, and it's damn good.

He co-produces and performs on a cover of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You." Very nice track. In fact, the only weak spot on the cd is the duet on "Ain't No Sunshine" with Tracy Chapman. Neither artist sounds like they give a rat's ass about singing that song, and it's easily the worst version that I've ever heard of it. That aside, the cd is well worth searching out.

A lot of people don't know that it's out and it's really hard to find in stores, right now. According to Buddy and his crew manager, this is because of the merger with Sony Music. According to Buddy, if you weren't originally on Sony and you aren't one of the "hot, young" artists on Jive, then you're basically getting shat on. He was furious that he can't even get the new cd to sell at his shows. His own damn cd, and they won't ship him any copies to sell. He was bitching about how much money he's losing each night and about how the album is basically doomed, because concerts are where he's selling the majority of his cds these days.

I like that Hold Steady record too - they were in town a few weeks back, but they came right when I was in the middle of period end at work so I couldn't make it. Harrumph...

The Sujan Stevens record remains unheard by me, but everybody seems to be absolutely wetting themselves over it, so I'm sure I'll love it too when I do get around to picking it up.

My other nominees:

The Go-Betweens - Oceans Apart - despite the fact the album sounds like a 4th generation bootleg, the songs are the best they've ever done.

The Books - Lost and Safe - My favourite Sunday afternoon record at the moment.

The Decemberists - Picaresque - Relentlessly great - I have to get around to exploring their back catalogue.
