I may agree with you there, but I never thought the two bands were comparable anyway. I do like Depeche Mode much more than U2 though. And I love Dave Gahan's voice. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

I'm not really certain in what way the two are comparable. If I had to choose one, I would probably go with U2, because their albums are a lot more consistent and their music is more eclectic. That said, I do love Depeche Mode and don't see how they're at all relatable to U2. It's a jungle out there.

The closest they came to being anything alike would be with their ZOO TV and Devotional tours in '93.
I like U2 more, but they're 2 of my favorite bands.

Shut your piecake! As I was saying, before the site so rudely crashed, I far prefer DM to U2, because you don't have to deal with as much celebrity baggage with DM. I like some of U2's stuff, though I really don't like their past two or three albums very much...meanwhile, I've been hot or cold about DM, but the band has always been what it is and they make big garish pop songs that sound good live or in a club, and that's that, and I can dig it.

I don't think DM has been anywhere near as consistent with their output, but as singles bands, I'd say they're just about neck and neck.

I wonder who Anton Corbijn likes more.

i don't think either band has been terribly consistent with their output, but i also think they're both bands who have fans who range wildly in what's considered good and bad material, so it's kinda hard to measure. i don't know that either band have created a hands-down stinker.

I'm not crazy about "A Broken Frame" or "Construction Time Again", although the singles are decent. "Exciter" hasn't gotten much love from me either. I'm hoping they win me back with this new one. I love pretty much every U2 album other than "October".

So you really only like 3 or 4 DM albums?

So you really only like 3 or 4 DM albums? i like DM the way i like eurythmics - i think they're stronger with singles than with albums. i love tons of songs by both, but i only enjoy a few albums all the way through.

This is a good ? ... And the answer is not easy given
I guess I like U for their over the top acting Depeche Mode however seems to be more intense and thus strikes me more as a band and musically. And I love Songs of Faith and Devotion and Exciter was a supurb album too!! So I guess I like DM more.... I think "Time is a train, makes the future the past"

Like others have said, this is a strange comparison. But my preference is also for Depeche Mode. As a teenager I liked both bands, but right around the time of Achtung Baby and Zooropa, U2 became a bit too hip to their own hip factor. At that point I kind of started to tune out and haven't fully gone back since then. My big brother and I had this ridiculous thing where we couldn't openly admit to liking each other's musical choices. Joshua Tree and War were two of "his albums" that I would secretly steal from him and listen to quite a bit. I love those albums.
During my senior year in high school, I must have gone through two or 3 copies of Violator. It's still one of my favorite albums. Music for the Masses (or Them Asses as anxiety referred to it

I saw Dave Gahan with some blonde babe at a Pea Soup Andersen's in Santa Nella, Calif., about 10 years ago, when he was in the midst of his major drug period. Talk about bizarre. He got on his motorcycle with that chick, and they took off. That said, I freaking love Depeche Mode. Gahan was on the verge of falling off the cliff big-time with his drug overdose, but we got him back. And I think "Exciter" had some great songs on it. Certainly not my favorite DM album - that honor goes to "Violator" - but I think "Precious" has my interest piqued on the new album. I want to see them in concert.

Gimme Depeche over U2 anyday, although I do like U2. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

However, I can't really compare the two bands - and DM has gone through lots of changes in the last 10 years - it'll be interesting to see what the new CD brings to the table. I believe Dave has taken a stab at songwriting as well - big shoes to fill by comparison to Martin. However, Dave's voice is haunting and charismatic in the way that he's devlivered Martin's songs. I JUST GOT TICKETS FOR THE LA SHOW! I'm SOOOOO EXCITED! VOTE....EARLY

I like U2 but I favor Depeche Mode way more and I love their remixes. I saw them 4 the 1st time on their "Songs of Faith and Devotion"tour and was blown away. It was an awesome show especially 4 an electronic band. The huge screens were cool and when they peformed their older stuff like Just Can't Get Enough... the crowd went nuts! It was a really great show! My friend is a hard core DM fan and he wasn't 2 happy with Exicter either, but I happen 2 like about half of it. I like When The Body Speaks.

No way! U2 runs circles around DM in terms of band dynamics.

U2 is far far far better than DM in my opinion... that said, i'm sick of U2 right now and ready for the new DM album I love DM but their early stuff sounds so dated its unlistenable to me. At this point, I really only listen to Music for the Masses and onward. Violator is my favorite DM album... But honestly I think U2 is in a different stratosphere than Depeche Mode.

There are a TON of great songs from that period. And I have a really special place in my heart for "Speak & Spell".

Yeah... there are alot of great songs, definitely, but... the production just grates on my nerves. I would love it if DM went back and re-recorded some of those great old tracks.
