Just as an aside, when I was travelling in the Middle East, I met a German couple who were in med school. They worshiped Bob Dylan. In fact, they claimed they learned English by studying his songs. Their English was excellent too. biggrin

billie fucking holliday! i DESPISE her voice! i really dont understand it, and b4 anyone says it (cuz its been said to me b4) DO NOT throw strange fruit in my face! yes great beauiful song, and nina simone does it better.

Just as an aside, when I was travelling in the Middle East, I met a German couple who were in med school. They worshiped Bob Dylan. In fact, they claimed they learned English by studying his songs. Their English was excellent too.

falloff the power of dylan survives! lol and more power to em cuz as much as i love him i cant understand a word he's sayin sometimes! lol

side note: to the guy who doesnt get janis joplin and the many people who dont get dylan i totally understand, i love them now but when i first heard janis i thought she sounded like a drunk marge simpson! lol, i thought it was SOOOOO horrid. but now i love her, and i think her voice is beautiful. same w/ dylan, my first exposure to him was the movie dangerous minds and i thought hey this sounds kinda nice, so i went and downloaded hey mr tamberine man - i friggin HATE that song!! omg everyother word rhymes and his voice is very annoying in it after a while(not to mention that damn harmonica), but then i heard ballad of a thin man and thats what got me hooked. its true tho, he's not for everyone, not in lyrics or vocal abilities.
Yesterday is dead...tomorrow hasnt arrived yet....i have just ONE day...
...And i'm gonna be groovy in it!

I never got Dylan either. I can understand people liking his song-writing, but he flat out can't sing. He gets up there and mumbles and people call it genius.

Supposedly Bob Dylan’s greatest gift to popular music was his use of language, but I find his talents as a performer far more important and compelling. If his songs and words were his only strength, then people would just listen to the thousands of cover versions of his songs in circulation and no one would bother with his records. Like Columbia’s marketing slogan said, nobody sings Dylan like Dylan.

Scoff if you want, but I think Dylan is the finest rock vocalist ever, emphasis placed on “rock”. Could he pull off an album of cole porter standards backed by the Nelson Riddle orchestra? Of course not – but he doesn’t have to. There’s a phrase the Jesus and Mary Chain used once that perfectly describes Dylan’s voice – Barbed Wire Kisses. Even more important than his voice is the incredible sense of timing he possesses. I once heard a lecture on the radio by a professor of music who stated that Dylan’s sense of timing and vocal inflection was only rivaled by Sinatra, and I think that's absolutely spot-on. Just listen to the way he says “Tax deductible charity organization” in Ballad of a Thin Man, or the way he delivers the punch lines in “Leopard-skin Pill-box Hat” (one of the funniest songs ever recorded). Comedians and actors hone their craft for years to sound so natural and relaxed.

You're right on the money with that observation.
An example i've always enjoyed...

Subterranean Homesick Blues
Johnny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
It's somethin' you did
God knows when
But you're doin' it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin' for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten

Maggie comes fleet foot
Face full of black soot
Talkin' that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phone's tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
Orders from the D. A.
Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't try "No Doz"
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows

Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You're gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders
Watch the parkin' meters

Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles

And a note that all "singers" should pay attention to is that you can understand every word.
This is a difficult song to sing. There's no choruses to rest on and every stanza is unique lyrically.

Did anyone see that episode of South Park where one of the characters becomes a member of a Goth gang. "To join our gang of non-conformists you have to dress exactly like us and listen to the same music that we do". Priceless!

My list by the way would include:
QUEEN (Overblown rock operatics. I blame Pete Townshend!)
JANIS JOPLIN (Bought a 2 CD Ultimate Collection to check out the fuss. Excruciatingly annoying woman screaming? I get that at home already!)
COLDPLAY (ZZZZZ)
PINK FLOYD (Stoner noodling? Psychedelic brass band music? Gimme the first album with Syd Barrett and forget the rest)
PAUL WELLER (Once a great singer and songwriter with The Jam and TSC, covered a vast spectrum of musical styles. Now content with repeating the same turgid rock style for the past ten years)
ERIC CLAPTON (Sure Cream were ok but solo? No thanks)
UB40 (once quite a cool band until they decided to become a novelty cabaret reggae band)

I like "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit" is great. nod I've tried to get into them, but beyond that I don't liten to them very often. But they do really convey that quintessential 60's San Francisco/hippy/flower power feeling to me. I never experienced that first hand of course, but whenever I feel like "going back" to that era, I'll put on "White Rabbit". lol

Actually try her first..um..6 albums as her voice sounds really young and fresh, on some of the tracks she sounds like a teenage Bjork!!!-
trust me on this one- the 1st disc to your friends "Just for the Record" Boxset and play:
"Miss Marmelstein"
"You'll Never Know"
"I Hate Music"
"Nobody's Heart (Belongs to Me)"
"Cry Me a River"

- You'll be hooked, anything 1960's Streisand rules!?!

Positively 4th Street
You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning

You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that's winning

You say I let you down
You know it's not like that
If you're so hurt
Why then don't you show it

You say you lost your faith
But that's not where it's at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it

I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You're in with

Do you take me for such a fool
To think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don't know to begin with

You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck"
But you don't mean it

When you know as well as me
You'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once
And scream it

No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I'd rob them

And now I know you're dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don't you understand
It's not my problem

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you

Like A Rolling Stone
Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

There is much more to a song than the words. If that wasn't the case, we'd all just read poetry. Sorry but I still don't "get" this cat

the way i feel about dylan is this: he's so be felt more than he is to be understood and sometimes heard. all those people who sit around and analyze the mans lyrics for "deeper" meaning give me a good laugh. i'm more inclined to sit there enjoy the music, and his voice, and if possible the words. its like i love the song ballad of a thin man, but i have no idea what he's talkin about. or i and i where i cant understand any of the words bsides the chorus. its like i said, he's to be felt moreso than understood or heard (sometimes i just drown out his voice altogether and listen to the music or words)
Yesterday is dead...tomorrow hasnt arrived yet....i have just ONE day...
...And i'm gonna be groovy in it!
