the power of dylan survives! lol and more power to em cuz as much as i love him i cant understand a word he's sayin sometimes! lol side note: to the guy who doesnt get janis joplin and the many people who dont get dylan i totally understand, i love them now but when i first heard janis i thought she sounded like a drunk marge simpson! lol, i thought it was SOOOOO horrid. but now i love her, and i think her voice is beautiful. same w/ dylan, my first exposure to him was the movie dangerous minds and i thought hey this sounds kinda nice, so i went and downloaded hey mr tamberine man - i friggin HATE that song!! omg everyother word rhymes and his voice is very annoying in it after a while(not to mention that damn harmonica), but then i heard ballad of a thin man and thats what got me hooked. its true tho, he's not for everyone, not in lyrics or vocal abilities. Yesterday is dead...tomorrow hasnt arrived yet....i have just ONE day...

alandail said: I never got Dylan either. I can understand people liking his song-writing, but he flat out can't sing. He gets up there and mumbles and people call it genius.
Supposedly Bob Dylan’s greatest gift to popular music was his use of language, but I find his talents as a performer far more important and compelling. If his songs and words were his only strength, then people would just listen to the thousands of cover versions of his songs in circulation and no one would bother with his records. Like Columbia’s marketing slogan said, nobody sings Dylan like Dylan.
Scoff if you want, but I think Dylan is the finest rock vocalist ever, emphasis placed on “rock”. Could he pull off an album of cole porter standards backed by the Nelson Riddle orchestra? Of course not – but he doesn’t have to. There’s a phrase the Jesus and Mary Chain used once that perfectly describes Dylan’s voice – Barbed Wire Kisses. Even more important than his voice is the incredible sense of timing he possesses. I once heard a lecture on the radio by a professor of music who stated that Dylan’s sense of timing and vocal inflection was only rivaled by Sinatra, and I think that's absolutely spot-on. Just listen to the way he says “Tax deductible charity organization” in Ballad of a Thin Man, or the way he delivers the punch lines in “Leopard-skin Pill-box Hat” (one of the funniest songs ever recorded). Comedians and actors hone their craft for years to sound so natural and relaxed. [Edited 10/4/05 19:09pm]

The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

"today i look all around and see armies of burly 15 year olds with beards and tatoes and piercings all walking around looking like there 40 and thinking they are cool and rebelious while wearing the same mainstream/alternative mall gear that everyone else is wearing."
Did anyone see that episode of South Park where one of the characters becomes a member of a Goth gang. "To join our gang of non-conformists you have to dress exactly like us and listen to the same music that we do". Priceless! My list by the way would include: QUEEN (Overblown rock operatics. I blame Pete Townshend!) JANIS JOPLIN (Bought a 2 CD Ultimate Collection to check out the fuss. Excruciatingly annoying woman screaming? I get that at home already!) COLDPLAY (ZZZZZ) PINK FLOYD (Stoner noodling? Psychedelic brass band music? Gimme the first album with Syd Barrett and forget the rest) PAUL WELLER (Once a great singer and songwriter with The Jam and TSC, covered a vast spectrum of musical styles. Now content with repeating the same turgid rock style for the past ten years) ERIC CLAPTON (Sure Cream were ok but solo? No thanks) UB40 (once quite a cool band until they decided to become a novelty cabaret reggae band) [Edited 10/6/05 2:44am]

I like "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit" is great. I've tried to get into them, but beyond that I don't liten to them very often. But they do really convey that quintessential 60's San Francisco/hippy/flower power feeling to me. I never experienced that first hand of course, but whenever I feel like "going back" to that era, I'll put on "White Rabbit".
