Neil Young - boring name, boring music
Gram Parsons - cuntry and western
David Hasselhoff - though to quote Joan Rivers, 80 million Germans can't be wrong, can they?....

Please God someone explain to me why they got the props they did??

"Smells like Teen Spirit" irritated my SOUL. I hated that song and everything that followed. Were his damn jaws wired shut??! It was noise, pure noise...there was nothing...NOTHING musical about Nirvana!

They should have called it "Nails across a CHALKBOARD" cause that's what they sounded like!
mad

that was kinda the point, it wasn't supposed to be melodic, it was supposed to express that weird combination of anger, apathy, and frustration that many people between the ages of 15 and 27 were feeling at that time....

it wasn't supposed to sound pleasent, it was cathartic.

oh, and for me, thje classic artist i hate is the beastie boys, it's not rap, it's just yelling over a minimilistic beat.
[Edited 10/1/05 12:47pm]

i dont understand that... when Nirvana came out i was 21 years old..i dont remember me or my friends having any apathy or anger..hell we were having a great time with hair metal until Nirvana ruined it all sad
Check it out ...Shiny Toy Guns R gonna blowup VERY soon and bring melody back to music..you heard it here 1st! http://www.myspacecomment...theone.mp3

i have to say i like dylan, but there was a very small period of time there in the beginning that he was amazing to me.
by like 65 or 66 he was already losing whatever it was that made me like him.

hendrix i love, i think people go on and on about his playing, to me he had an amazing cool laid back voice and wrote some great lyrics, and im not talking purple haze.

the dead and the stones i dont get.
to me the dead are the most boring thing i have ever heard, the stones might have 10 songs i like, and considering the length of there career and all there albums thats not much, and i often like covers of stones songs more than the stones songs.

nirvana.
i dont know where to begine.
to me the whole grunge thing is literally the worst thing that ever happened to music and even pop culture as a whole.
once grunge hit mainstream and then alternative came in and knocked down all the doors, everything bled together,
to me the 90s were awful alternative music, underground comics, independent film.
all these things were brought into the mainstream, now nothing is alternative, nothing is underground.
the music i hear on the radio today seems to have rock, hip hop, pop, country and everything thrown in, into one big bland pile of forgettable product.
rock was pretty young thin and flamboyent.
today i look all around and see armies of burly 15 year olds with beards and tatoes and piercings all walking around looking like there 40 and thinking they are cool and rebelious while wearing the same mainstream/alternative mall gear that everyone else is wearing.
and all rock styles seem to be very boring and kind of unwashed today.
and i blame it all on the incredibly overrated nirvana and grunge.
and i sit in awe as this man is put in with the likes of john lennon and dylan as a song writer.

I'm confused by your question. confuse You say you're talking about "those you just can't understand anyone liking" and then the next sentence is how you can understand other people liking the Beatles, but you're not into them. hmm

Anyway, I assume you really DO mean what your first sentence means then: classic artists that don't move you by their musical style, right?

Well, for me I guess it would be...

The Grateful Dead
The Beach Boys
and well, I can't think of many others right now. hmmm I like a LOT of "classic" artists I guess. I'm sure I'll think of more later.

I'm just not moved by these two bands. Their music's just not my thing.

For me, Bob Dylan is that artist. I've heard all about the complexity and nuances of his lyrics. And how he made such a big stir when he moved away from the acoustic folk scene and went electric. I've read about and listened to a lot of Dylan over the years so it's not like I don't have any knowledge of the man. But all of that said, I don't think he's compelling as musician, singer or song-writer. I swear to god, he's like one big SNL skit to me. Dylan heads go nuts when I say this but that's just the way I feel. I'm a pretty open person when it comes to music. I like to listen to stuff that I know isn't really even my style. I like to try and listen with other ears and understand what people that like that sort of style hear in each artist. I can do this with country, rock, traditional jazz and a lot of other forms of music I'm not personally connected with. But I've just never got Dylan. Anyone else have a classic artists they just don't get?
[Edited 9/29/05 11:23am]

And I would STILL take him over the prepackage, Clear Channeled, absolute crap that's passing for music today!

When I look back to those "classic artists" that I don't get, I'm trying to see what purpose or role did they play in their heyday? I see where the Beatles fit into the 60s. Although I don't like AC/DC, I see where they fit in as the cockrock of the 80s before cockrock came with makeup and long hair. Not a Dylan fan, either, but I can see how his music opened a lot of ears. So who is left for me?

Jackson Browne- why? What are you singing about and why? It's like he got wedged between John Denver and James Taylor and never quite got out.

Crosby,Stills,Nash,Young- Just not feelin' it. Kansas sounded better to me.

Rick James- as soon as Prince opened for him, Rick James' music was done for. It was....ok.

Sonic Youth. Hole. I don't get either of these bands.

At first, I didn't get the Smiths or Elvis Costello. And what I mean by "at first" is "15 years after I first heard their music." Seriously. The Smiths didn't catch onto me until last year. I remember hearing the music in high school and thinking "what a bunch of whiny Brits" but once I became a workerbee and saw the humor of being so cynical, the Smiths make me laugh. Break down the musical arrangements, and they had some knockout work. Same with Elvis Costello. After I heard "my dark life" off the X-Files soundtrack and then the Juliet Letters, I liked him more.

Rolling Stones- None of that music is good. Like someone said earlier, watered-down soul, much like Aerosmith. I can't even see how the Stones got to be so big! They are like the Pat Boone of the 50s to me, with better timing.

I never got Dylan either. I can understand people liking his song-writing, but he flat out can't sing. He gets up there and mumbles and people call it genius.

How can you not get Elvis, though - he changed popular music more than any other artist ever.

dylan i don't get, either...

Forget the voice, forget the face, forget the persona...

Positively 4th Street
You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning

You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that's winning

You say I let you down
You know it's not like that
If you're so hurt
Why then don't you show it

You say you lost your faith
But that's not where it's at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it

I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You're in with

Do you take me for such a fool
To think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don't know to begin with

You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck"
But you don't mean it

When you know as well as me
You'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once
And scream it

No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I'd rob them

And now I know you're dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don't you understand
It's not my problem

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you

Like A Rolling Stone
Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
