Biggest disappointments:

New Order (a few great tracks and a whole lot of filler)
British Sea Power (all hype, terrible band)
New Pornographers
The Roots (was that this year?)
Most hip-hop this year.

Honorable disappointments: Beck and Coldplay.

biggest disappointments for me this year have been

nine inch nails
eels

- neither of which were necessarily BAD, but i just can't get into them at all. maybe i've lost interest in both bands, or maybe there was just nothing new or fresh on either of these albums. i dunno. it's a bummer, because at one time, these were two of my fave acts.

I never even heard NIN.
shrug

but this is really the first year in a long time when I've been able to even name 10 albums I liked! And I have bittorrent to thank for most of it (listen up, RIAA!)

Here are my faves:

Chemical Brothers
Norma Jean
A Band of Bees
Mike Doughty (finally!)
Beck
Stina Nordenstam
Jimmy Chamberlin (of the Smashing Pumpkins) actually put out a good MMW-style jazz-rock album
Masada's "Sanhedrin" comp bex set is EXCELLENT
the Cure re-releases RULE psuedo-goths

also-rans:
New Order (the middle part of the album is good)
NIN didn't do it for me
The Evens - can't get into it, but still love all past Ian MacKaye records (big ups to Minor Threat, Embrace, Egg Hunt, Skewbald, Fugazi, half the bands on Dischord with an Ian MacKaye guest appearance)
Oasis was all right, I suppose, but Noel, shut up!
Billy Corgan - Zzzzzz...
Audioslave: a corporate disappointment
At-The Drive In: post-mortem comp proves all the band was was potential, and even...
The Mars Volta was 50% genius, 50% pure crap. Like many Prince records.

I don't know if I can say that it's been a "great" year for music. Music hasn't been great since the early 90's, if you ask me. But there is a hell of a lot of good stuff out there though. And you won't even find much of it on MTV or VH1.

Plus, many of my favorite artists from the past have reunited and are showing the new kids how it's done. smile

I've read more than one review that agrees with you, unfortunately. I may have to sample the entire album before deciding to buy it. neutral

I know a bunch of people who think it's their best (I love Mass Romantic), and while I don't think it's bad or anything, it just seems all over the place and none of the songs are really sticking for me so far.

thumbs up! The Chemical Brothers track with the dude from Bloc Party is second only to "Galvanize" with Q-Tip.

- Nikka Costa can'tneverdidnothin'

Not only aren't there many artists making this music, there is no outlet on radio or TV for this kind of sharp, professional, carefully constructed, and passionately performed genre-hopping pop (the best you get in 2005 is Joss Stone playing against her strengths in Gap commercials). - allmusic.com

I personally think Joss Stone is shit. Amazing voice and all, but the music is SOOOO boring. Nikka on the other hand is becoming my favorite person in the world, her music really makes me happy, she is unpretentious and honest. Gotta Know has been on repeat on my ipod for the past 2 days!

Really liked this year:

White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
David Bowie - Stage (if this counts)

Thought were half decent (or mediocre)

New Order - Waiting for the Siren's Call
Foo Fighters - In Your Honor
Ryan Adams - Cold Roses
Coldplay - X&Y
Beck - Guero

Terrible, complete let-downs

Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth

Albums I'm anticipating in the last quarter of 2005
How's this for an 80's list?
Rolling Stones (buying it today)
Echo and the Bunnymen
Depeche Mode
Madonna

The year 2005 has been spent either still spinning my best of '04 discs (Arcade Fire - Funeral, U2 - How to Dismantle..., Green Day - American Idiot, Modest Mouse - Good News...) or delving into back catalogs that I hadn't before (New Order/Joy Division, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Pet Shop Boys).
I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

white stripes was a bit of a letdown for me...i liked it a lot on the first listen, then after that, i liked it less and less...it just didn't pack the punch that the last one had.

I actually find 2005 to be a bit sparse, but I admit to not being as feverishly adventurous as I was last year.

So far, I like 5, count 'em, 5 albums from this year.
