prince rogers nelson vs stevie wonder?

right, lets get to the bottom of this, there have been many prince vs stevie threads and i know its a bit daft because they are both brilliant but lets compare them by looking at different aspects of their musical ability.....here is my two cents worth.....

vocals.....stevie wins this one
guitar.....prince by a mile
bass.....prince again
drums.....prince
keyboards...stevie but only just
writing.....prince but only just
live.....prince by a mile

so for me, despite all the brilliance that stevie has, prince has the edge on him overall for me, what do you think looking at them this way?

Seriously though, I think Prince has got it on the vocals. He's far more diverse.

Bonus point for Stevie for standing up for Michael Jackson when Eminem dogged him in his new video.

steve=3
prince=5

Prince wins it for me..Sorry Stevie I still love ya! Hence, the bonus point! biggrin

vocals.....stevie wins this one PFJ: Agreed "by a mile"
guitar.....prince by a mile PFJ: Stevie doesn't play
bass.....prince again PFJ: Stevie doesn't play but certainly can represent on synthbass
drums.....prince PFJ: Stevie much more so. He's got much more natual swing and has been praised by a number of jazz drummers.
keyboards...stevie but only just PFJ: Stevie blows Prince away oy Keys AND piano.
harmonica...Prince don't play; Stevie's pretty damn good
writing.....prince but only just PFJ: Stevie has more quality songs than crapppy ones.
live.....prince by a mile PFJ: granted

so for me, despite all the brilliance that stevie has, prince has the edge on him overall for me, what do you think looking at them this way?
[Edited 9/6/05 10:06am]

My Conclusion: for more guitar & bass licks or a killer live show then Prince, but this is superfluous cuz Stevie gets guitarists and bassists who are at least as good as Prince (if not better), but on songwriting, singing and piano skills Stevie stomps Prince in the mud. More-to-the-point, I value my Stevie catalog over the Prince one and play them back more often.

as great as stevies albums were in the 70s(on a par with prince's albums in the 80 imo) his 85 onwards albums have been poor to say the least, yes , even worse than prince's output during the 90's and beyond so lets have less of the 'shit' argument....for every shit prince song, i will show you an even shittier stevie song.....

yea, but I don't have any Stones, Beach Boys, Who, Presley REM Velvet Underground U2 Nirvana or Radiohead records so it's a meaningless list to me. I assume you enjoy all these artists so your opinion parallels these writers or is it not your own? lol

This is almost as bad as Tupac versus Biggie! lol -- it's so hard to compare two indivduals at the top of their craft--
however the only thing you can do is break it down to their specific talents:

vocals.....both have their own stlye of siging but Prince has more range
guitar.....prince only because Stevie doesn't really play
bass.....same as above
drums.....Neither - they both just know how
keyboards...Stevie of course that's just as important to him as the vocals
writing.....This is really hard because they are both poets (this is really personal preference)
live.....This would be unfair because Stevie is blind - of course he's not going to give you the show Prince will

That list is such a joke!
No Michael Jackson means that list is seriously in need of some adjustments to say the least. Lets see...The Beatles are over-rated as artists. Neil Young does not need to be in the top 20. Give Michael a spot either above or below Prince. And ditch Neil Young off the top 20. Then seriously..lower The Beatles a few notches. I respect how great people think they are..but they aren't THAT great. I missed the boat on The Beatles.

All due respect, MJ is one of my favorite 20 musical artists ever. But he's more of a singer and entertainer than an artist.

Stevie, how can someone who came 'after' him and is influenced so much by him possibly be better? It's like a student who's better than his teacher, roughly said.
And Prince never made an alternative masterpiece like 'Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants'.
I enjoy Prince's music as much as Stevie's though. smile

clapping Acclaimed Music is the greatest website on the internet for discovering new music.

Yes, many critics are rock-biased. But the methods the owner uses to compile the lists result in an accurate portrayal of critical acclaim. The list is naturally going to cater toward critic biases, and although I disagree with a lot of the ranking in my personal opinion, I accept the ranking as a barometer for critical praise.

I'll never accept the validity of a list that puts Elvis Presley ahead of James Brown or Stevie Wonder. That's beyond biased!
I'd rather accept a snob-bared list that samples the tastes of 100.000 music listeners. At least, it's the only way to get an objective ranking!

shrug No one is asking you to agree with the rankings. I wouldn't put Elvis above James Brown or Stevie Wonder either, but Elvis has historically been more critically adored...
