That player said, "I'll always tell my kids about the time Michael Jordan and I combined for 75 points." Subjective, tho'. I think much of his later work stands up against his early work. If you're speaking purely of commercial merits... then I expected better of you.
All of these discussions are subjective to a degree. "Consistency" means from an artistic standpoint. Since Bad, his work has been up and down. Like much of Prince's work since the 80's, he's made classic songs, but not-so-classic albums. He's gone through producers like gym socks. If MJ were the producer you believe he is, would you see stories like this?
http://www.prince.org/msg/8/159608 Does that take away the fact that Mike has produced a lot of his own work? Of course not, but given the number of people who MJ has retained over the years to produce his stuff, one can legitimately question how much "production" MJ has actually done. Not to say he does nothing. IMO, some MJ fans give him too much credit for his "production," especially on his best albums, as if Quincy Jones, one of the most talented and accomplished producers, composers and arrangers in the history of pop music, were Sean Combs. MJ's greatness and QJ's central role in making MJ's good work classic work are NOT, repeat NOT, mutually exclusive facts.
Sure, but it ain't all down to Quincy. Mike had some good songs. Period. I never said he didn't. Quincy has to have the songs to produce and MJ gave him some outstanding ones. Which brings me back to my point. Michael Jackson could eclipse many of the folks on this list in terms of singing. He could blow all save Prince away on stage. But let's be real. He's written several outstanding songs, but can we really say he'll generally be remembered as an "artist" or an "entertainer" and singer? Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
