knows that I mean African American features are pretty diverse. . everyone knows that black people come in every shade of the rainbow, Black women might be pursing another version of blackness,
my thing is, ok she might not be trying to be white, but like u said pursuing another version a blackness, a LIGHTER version of blackness. think about what kind of message that sends out. thats my point and i think the point of many. she might not be trying to be white, but its seems she aint pleased with being dark either Yes, that's a poor message as well.

A dude @ work was flirting w/ me one time & went on to say, "DAMN, I wonder what you'd look like with your hair straight? You'd be FINE!" At one point, she was so pissed at the question, she told this one girl, who didn't believe her, "you know its ok just to be just black, right". I thought that was so interesting for her to say. I'd asked her why was she so upset by the question. She said ppl ask the question as if means she is something specialif she's bi-racial and she's something special with just being good ol black Sydney. She said that they must have some issues to even ask her the question.
Okay, I'm officially in love w/ your daughter for knowing that & you for raising her so beautifully I wish that for every little Black girl on the planet

Yes, that's a poor message as well. And that's the point of this whole thread IMO. Even if she was trying to attain another version of Blackness, WHY is that? The desire for that comes from somewhere... a shitty, shitty place

this shit's STILL here?
anyways, my two bus tokens on this: the picture waaaaay up at the start of a thread sets off two things in my head: 1) obviously, that shit's been photoshopped beyond belief to make her look even more light-skinned than she is. i've seen the skin lightening-via-photoshop thing other times before. and speaking of skin lightening--or moreso, body modification... 2) brothas and sistas who think that their natural-born looks don't fit in accordance with society and their peers...they sadden me. everytime i walk into a beauty supply store and see tubes of skin lightening creams and what-not, it irks me. it's just like "WHY???" folks are beautiful, no matter what shade they were born with. it's odd--when i was younger i was pretty much the star of the family. why? because i had "good hair"--long, thick, all of that. whenever my hair gets wet, it gets wavy and curls up. i remember folks asking me, "why's your hair get curly when it gets wet? are you mixed?" almost as if folks forgot that black hair is naturally curly as it is. as for skin tones--when i was growing up, skin tone was of no importance to me or anyone else; my family comes in all shades of brown. my mom was light-skinned and my dad is dark-skinned. my skin falls in between the two contrasting shades. not once did i ever hear from anybody in my family (or ever heard, to boot) that "light is right" or anything of the sort. it's sad to see that other folks ain't really been raised the same way, or have been duped into thinking that the features they were born with aren't good enough. fuck ambi edit [Edited 9/25/05 19:02pm]

Thank you - that's what I'm saying. Stop trying to fit the "American" standard, and let your natural beauty shine. And that goes for other women of color. Building a positive self-image starts in the home. I'm thankful I had smart parents who emphasized that "black is beautiful". I've dated sistas five shades lighter & five shades darker than me. It's all good.

Okay, I'm officially in love w/ your daughter for knowing that & you for raising her so beautifully I wish that for every little Black girl on the planet thanks Calhoun ma.....its not easy to raise a balanced kid. But Sydney understands a lot about who she is. It helps that her God father is white, one of her momma's best friend is puerto rican, she was basically raised with me working with gays/lesbians, her aunt is white, her momma is black and sane, etc her surroundings are multi-cultural and she understand that she fits everywhere she goes. Sometimes i'm VERY surprised at what she says. She has even checked me on my comments. We were talking about this Indian woman who is the most famous movie star in India. I said, "wow, she doesn't look Indian to me. She looks Hispanic." Syd quickly said "so what, she's still Indian" She then said, "that's just like someone saying I'm not black enough because I'm light skinned. I'm just as black as you mom and that woman is just as Indian as a traditional looking Indian woman" Then I realized I've created a monster. She just doesn't like stereotypes because she's seen it all. Plus having my mother ALWAYS saying "treat ppl as they treat you". That was her motto. So far so good but I still have some years to go. I want to raise a SANE, healthy woman so I'm still not done yet. Bow Wow could show up and fuck up the whole program....lol

Frankly, keeping ur african roots is fine, but, no offence, what is considered to be beautiful in Africa ain't whats considered beautiful in america.
Go to africa and this lightening is not happening of course. Stay looking like a stereoptypical african over in the western world, and u r just not gonna be considered as attractive as a white blonde with blue eyes. If a white blonde with blue eyes goes to africa, is she gonna be seen as pretty over there in general by the african community? [Edited 10/6/05 14:47pm]

I actually think she looks rather nice. She looks some what sophisticated, more sophisticated than she's ever looked, which there's nothing wrong with the way she's looked, but I don't see that much wrong with her wanting to broaden her fashion sense lol. Her nose looks different from the older pics people posted..did she have a nose job?
