Janet vs. Erotica

Madonna "Erotica" (1992)
singles:
--Erotica
--Deeper & Deeper
--Bad Girl
--Rain
--Fever (non U.S.)
--Bye Bye Baby (non U.S.)

vs.

Janet Jackson "janet." (1993)
singles:
--That's the way Love Goes
--If
--Again
--Anytime, Anyplace
--Because of Love
--You Want This
--Whoops Now (non U.S.)
--Where are you Now (non U.S.)

my vote...

EROTICA! I love "janet" and i think it's a classic but i gotta give it up to "Erotica" because it's Madonna's best album and has the songs Deeper and Deeper, Waiting, Rain...and the first three tracks in a row kick ass too. "Why's it So Hard" was great and even better live..."Where Life Begins" is the raunchiest song by a mainstream female artist pre Lil Kim..."Thief of Hearts" and "Words" are the two best throwaway dance tracks of her career. And the jazzy album closer "Secret Garden"...yummy.
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Erotica wins because it is more consistent. janet. has highs that Erotica can't touch ("This Time," "Where Are You Now") but also suffers from its meandering interludes and filler ("The Body That Loves You", "What'll I Do", "Funky Big Band").

Erotica reeks of cool in spite of a few slip ups ("Fever", "Did You Do It?") and has aged quite well.

Im sorry too. Erotica while sorta adventerous for madonna, leaned boring torwards the end.

The soul of Anytime Anyplace, is something Madonna can't touch.

I love that album. It's in my top 3 madonna albums
together with "Like a Prayer" and "Ray of Light".

The Janet album is good enough, sure and it's got a
few very cool moments but all in all, "Erotica" is
a more cohesive package that really marks an "era",
instead of being just another bunch of songs.

"Rain" still being one of her most beautiful song.

actually "Erotica" was the first Madonna album I didn't buy right away... and none of the singles from it changed my initial decision... I didn't get into any Madonna release since that time really.. it's nice'n all.. but that's about it, isn't it?

so my vote naturally goes to "Janet"
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

Erotica was the album that got me into madonna, so i guess i should natrually vote for this one, however for some reason im inclined to go for Janet. I think that the singles off janet were far stronger than Erotica, particularly "If" which i think is still one of her best tracks.

Erotica was an album that definitely marked an era, a madonna era that im really fond of, and it makes a great album to sit and listen to. Its the album trakcs off erotica that make the album for me. Waiting, Why's It So Hard & Where Life Begins etc.

I think both albums are marked by a few tracks that just sound plain shit. Throb and Funky Big Band off Janet, Words and Theif Of Hearts off Erotica. However I give Janet the nod because it had some of janets best singles on there, whereas Erotica had singles that I like (Bad Girl, Rain, D&D), but they dont rank up there with her best.

Janet was the better album, with the better cover, the better videos and the better looking singer. Madonna sucks bad eggs and lives.

I think I love both equally. 'janet' is great but slightly overrated and 'Erotica' is very underrated.

"Janet" was Janet at her commercial peak, and her hottest.
This album is a classic and Erotica can't even compare. although "deeper and deeper" is a great song

No contest! "Erotica" is my favorite Madonna album and "Janet" is the album that made me never buy another Janet Jackson that was released after it.

Deeper and Deeper? Cough, cough, GAY CLASSIC. lol

I didn't know If was a "gay classic."

Both albums are very good, but far longer than they need be. Erotica suffers because of In This Life (nice sentiment, terrible song) and Did You Do It. janet. suffers because of What'll I Do and Funky Big Band (I know some love them, but I always skipped over them). I love how Erotica runs the spectrum of dance music, and those beats and deep bass are killer! janet. overall has a nice rhythm to it and is perfectly sequenced!

I'm having a harder time with this "vs" threads than I should be. Why can't you pit Like a Prayer against All 4 U or Rhythm Nation 1814 against Music? Those would be easier choices. lol

Oi, 'What'll I Do' is brilliant - refreshing to have a non-Jam & Lewis song on there. Get rid of 'Funky Big Band' and 'The Body That Loves You', and non US audiences really never took to the uber-DULL 'Anytime Anyplace'

I love The Body that Loves You. Sounds a bit like elevator music, but it's the best darn elevator music ever.

Ohhh, "Erotica"!

The strengh of "Erotica" isn't even it's single choices. It was just a hot vibrant peice of pop. The thing about "Erotica" is that it fells right after working with Shep Pettibone hear and there. While it doesn't just try to have one sound, it isn't all over the place...it's consistent (as Moonbeam noted) while some of "Janet." songs try to hard to be different ("What'll I Do"?). And while many fans agree that "Erotica" is one of her strongest discs, it also has one of her worst songs ("Did You Do It?") but luckily it was edited out of the clean verison so many people don't even have to live with the memory of that song! For some it may taint the entire CD though. Other than that. every song works well. Frankly, "Erotica" could have had released all the non-singles as singles for my money (especially "Words" and "Secert Garden"). All the songs were just that good.

I once made an alernate "Erotica" with some of the songs
on the second half of the album taken off, like DidUDoIt
and InThisLife and replaced them only with "With Honors"
soundtrack song "I'll Remember".

That was a damn good album that way!

But as it is, it's still a great hot nasty album drool

I have to give it up to Erotica because Maddy showed how to push the boundaries of SEX and express that in an ambitious, conventional music package. It was just something new for her and us because she became more interested in hip-hop, dance, and electronica music. She already made this change on songs like Justify My Love and Vogue, but with this record she just gave us all something to talk about and I was stunned when I listened to the album and looking at the CD booklet including that picture of her sucking that big toe. I still don't know why critics didn't give this one a chance.

Janet. was just half of what Maddy did with Erotica: getting down and dirty, but it was more lusher than Erotica. Yep, Jan threw away her solider uniform and just put on some jeans and a bra and just got laid. There are alot great ones here (That's The Way Love Goes, Because Of Love, Anytime, Anyplace, Again), and there are some duds (New Agenda, Funky Big Band, Throb), but it is her most ambitious and sensual record. It just makes you wonder why every man, including me, brought this album back in '93 and made it sell over 8 million copies.

Erotica!

Madonna was on fire from the release of Vogue in May of 90 through the Blonde Ambtion Tour- Justify My Love and it's two scandals, Truth or Dare, A League of Thier Own, This Used to be My Playgroud-Sex and Erotica.

The best tour of her carear Girlie Show followed on it's heels. This woman was on top of her game and put out her best album. Her name and face was everywhere. Granted most of it was bad press but it was still everywhere. Janet's current was nothing in comparrison to this cause it was a big deal everywehre not just the US. Though she talks the era down now she still is proud of it. No Regrets.

janet. only existed in the way we have it because Madonna broke down acceptable sexual roles for female popstars with Erotica.

and Erotica showed lil huff his first Leather

yes, i know. it was a fortunate decision. while Fever is pretty disposable 13 years later (aside from "edit one" which is hot hot hot), Goodbye To Innocence's biggest attraction is in the fact that it's an undiscovered gem. had it been track 2 on the album, it'd probably not have a very big following.
