Z Cult Favorite - New York Dolls

Here is one of my favorite groups and although they are fairly known, I do feel they are underrated. They were basically a glam version of The Stones, but, their first album from 73 is a rock gem. Produced by Todd Rundgren, this album is full of great songs such as "Lookin' For A Kiss" ( which gave the band KISS, who worshiped the Dolls, the idea for their band name) "Personality Crisis" (also gave Kiss drummer his stage name; PeterCriss),"Frankenstien", "Trash" and a song that Prince definately was aware of "Vietnamese Baby". Take a listen to that and then listen to P's "Ronnie Talk To Russia". During the "Dirty Mind" era, critics used to compare P to the Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders. They only released one more album after this, "Too Much Too Soon" from 74, which wasn't half as good. But, this band went on to influence countless of other bands and artists such as KISS, Prince, Guns N Roses, The Sex Pistols, etc. Anyway, who else digs this album and the band?

NYD were definitely trendsetters and glam before it chic to be glam along with pioneers like Bowie. BG Baby, you know Legs is hip to these dudes. As matter of fact, if I not mistaken, I remember one of the dudes in the band going on to be in SNL.

I wore my New York Dolls t-shirt the other day at Guitar Center and some kid asked me if they were influenced by Motley Crue (???!!!??)..The Dolls influence is still around today, and they were one of the few glambands that said they were heavily influenced by Little Richard. Peter Criss told me that him and Jerry Nolan were best friends back in the day. That's a group that really needs a DVD-Ramones style documentary. I recently bought the 1973 CD again after wearing out the original...Good pick, B.

Thanx, playboy. Hey, are we related?... Damn. But yeah, the whole "hair metal" scene that was on the Strip on Sunset in the 80's (my first gigs) was straight out Dolls. All the bands, including Motley, was biting hard off of the Dolls. I remember this free music paper called BAM. U look in the back of that, and it was all of these Doll clones. That shit dominated KNAC.

Nah. Can't get with that. As much as I love KISS, I hate when I see these over weight, wig wearing looking dudes put on this makeup. It' not the same, not by a long shot. I take my KISS circa 74-76.

There's a documentary called New York Doll about the late Arthur "killer" Kane their bassist. It was shown recently here in L.A. at some Film Festival.Didn't catch it though.
