My earliest memory is 1990. We had one of those huge KENWOOD stereo systems (back in the days when manufacturers were building their electronics as the centerpiece of a big, sprawing living room -- with wood siding and all).
I remember being blown away that you could digitally REWIND (notice I say rewind and not fast forward back to your favorite track, even down to the exact second and LISTEN to it as it went backwards). Also, the sound was amazing. I remember being blown away when I heard Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" album and when the song "Black or White" came on. You could hear the sound travel from one side of the speaker to the other. It tripped me out. This is also back when CDs came in those long paper boxes. WTF was up with that? Christmas of '89. I remember it well. It was a few days before I had my tonsils out and I lucked out cuz everyone wanted to buy me get well presents. Of course I asked for CD's.
Within the span from Christmas to New Year's, I think my collection was all of 7 CD's.

[Edited 7/14/05 11:49am] I believe that was done to make it easy for record store chains to use the displays that they were already using for records... rather than buy new displays. Also to make them less easy to steal. That's awesome. What were your first ones? That's what I wanna know! My brother had a player in 1989, and I'd used that occasionally to listen to his crappy ass CDs just so I could hear what it sounded like. I didn't get my own player until 1992, and I got a copy of Like a Prayer on CD (had it on cassette). That's still the copy I have of that album to this day.

1990. One of those CD/tape deck small boom box radios. I bought my first 3 CDs with it:
Wilson Phillips - Wilson Phillips LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out Madonna - Immaculate Collection Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I brought a Audiovox home system back in '98 and it was just cheap. It didn't have great sound and within 3 or 4 months later, the discs stopped playing. Now, I'm thankful I had saved money to buy a new stereo and also my 4th walkman. Check me out and add me on:

That was one of my first CD's too. I got it on December 27 as a get well present from my parents. I woke up from my surgery, they all talked to me for awhile, asked me what I wanted and ran off to get me some CD's.
