Underrated Soundtracks

Every now and then you find a soundtrack that works as a piece. It's rare, but it happens. Usually it's for a lower-budget picture where they're not that interested in selling a blockbuster soundtrack as well. So, what are yours?

One of the more underappreciated soundtracks I've come across recently is that of Wicker Park (2004).

1. Maybe Tomorrow – Stereophonics
2. Everybody Is Somebody – Lifehouse
3. A Movie Script Ending – Death Cab For Cutie (unreleased acoustic version)
4. How To Be Dead – Snow Patrol
5. Lover’s Spit – Broken Social Scene
6. Retour A Vega – The Stills (unreleased track)
7. Flowers in December – Mazzy Star
8. When The Day Is Done – The Legends
9. When I Goosestep – The Shins
10. Light Switch – Jaime Wyatt
11. These Days – Mates of State
12. All I Do - +/-
13. We Have a Map of the Piano – Mum
14. Against All Odds – Postal Service (rare, non-album track)
15. Strange and Beautiful – Aqualung
16. I know You Are But What Am I? - Mogwai
17. The Scientist – Johnette Napolitano (exclusive Coldplay cover for soundtrack)

These are mostly meditations on love and loss, and they create a mood that the film doesn't capture well enough (well, at least not until the nicely-shot final scene). The movie is iffy, but the soundtrack is pretty great.

Wim Wenders' "Until the End of the World" has a great soundtrack. I don't know if it's underappreciated, but it's something people should check out if they haven't. nod

Said it before but the cartoon "land before time" is a first rate emotive, heartbreaking score. Good luck finding it though. Diana ross had a hit from this movie. Its ok.

In The Name of the Father.

Quality Bono tracks along with "You've Made Me The Thief of Your Heart"...one of the few songs by Sinead O'Conner I actually love (hauntingly beautiful). Also some good classic tracks. Practically undiscovered...a gem know one knows about.

i love that sinead song - it's one of my favorite songs of hers. i have the CD single of it, though i really hoped it would be on the sinead "collaborations" album that just came out...it would have fit in beautifully.

Stanley clarke did the score. My dad was shocked. Stanely only gets one instrumental. Has snippets of the movie. So its awesome then as the speech is too funny.

all the stuff coming from david lynch from that era was just fabulous - the twin peaks soundtracks, the julee cruise albums, everything. i even like the mulholland dr. soundtrack - there's some really cool stuff written and performed by david lynch himself in it. very "hep" and bizarre, of course.

"Crimes of Passion" with Rick Wakeman
and "Red Shoe Diaries" are both excellent.

"Whore" the Ken Russel film and "Bad Lieutenant" the Abel Ferrara film
would be awesome if they were released.

I can't believe "SPUN" never got released.

Had it been released in during an era that actually appreciated music it would have fared much better.
