Do you think Aaliyah was overated ??

Do you think Aaliyah was overated ??
You know, I just started to listen to her CD's and I think it's weak... You know she was beautifull all that, but really I don't feel her music, it's average RnB...

Don't know why people talk like she was an extraordinary artist, but she wasn't.. She was only beautiful...

the majority of all R and B is mediocre lately.

Her song "At Your Best" was my wedding song though.

nod Kelly did marry her. However, after her parents found out about it, they demanded that the marriage be quickly annulled. The marriage certificate is on file down in the City of Chicago Court House.

I would definitely agree. I wore my first copy out, and now I brought my second copy. This is album showed the princess was at her everlasting peak, trying something new with the production. I loved it! headbang

I agree too. "Aaliyah" was a great record. Too bad I got it after she passed away. Aaliyah and I actually went to grade school about 2 miles away from each other. She went to Gesu and I went to St Cecilia (both Catholic schools). She graduated from the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts. I went to school with people that knew her very well. Its kinda like when I was growing up hearing stories about what it was like for older people in my family to go to school with Motown greats. Theres so many stories. wink

Hell, no, she wasn't overrated. She had a nice voice, was a very well-liked person and worked with great producers and songwriters. She didn't front at all about her talent - she stated openly that her talent was in front of the microphone and not as a songwriter and producer. Her voice, dancing and presence only got stronger as her career progressed, so I don't think we were fully able to see what she would have become. Aaliyah was an excellent record and improved upon One in a Million which was a very good one.

I don't think so. People were calling Aaliyah one of the best albums of 2001 before she even died. I loved it when it first came out but find it hard to listen to now. It makes me too sad. Baby Girl was also one of the most stunningly gorgeous women in the business. She could have gone the way of most of these out of control entertainers, but she remained grounded throughout her short career.

I do like her version of that song. Not quite as good as the Isley Brothers original, but it holds its own.

yes, sometimes. though, i did like her. she had a pretty good voice. at least a cut above most of her peers. but a lot of the time, i think she was the product of some really hot production. she did have a decent presence and an intriguing style, and i think in time, she could have grown into a bonafide superstar and fully-formed talent. too bad she didn't get that chance.

i must say though, if one more person airbrushes her onto a wall or the hood of their car or their t-shirt or whatever in one more video, i'm going to write my congressman....

No. She was the best thing to happen in R 'n B in the 90s.

One in a Million and Aaliyah are unmitigated classics.

Yup. Completely overrated. She had a couple of great songs, but that's as far as it went.

Just listen to a collection of all her greatest hits. Her albums were never nothing to rave about, but she did have good songs.

She was pretty, and mysterious...which is what made her. U couldnt get to her..just like Alecia Keys. She wasnt sleazy, classy and had a nice sensual voice which worked over Timbaland's beats perfectly.

In addition, she knew how to dance a bit.

nod You're right. Based on all the criteria you mention, she had Alicia beat, the thing Keys had the uppper hand on was her keyboard skills and that's it.

Well she may have been the average 90'd R&B female artist to some people, but you gotta admit she was young and her style was unique compared to others e.g. Brandy. I too love "Aaliyah" that really reflected her growth and maturity and her acting was great as well. She was just starting to show what she was made of, and how she could break away from the typical R&B genre and move to rock/soul and do it well. I mean if you look at female R&B artists today they are nothing compared to her in terms of talent, dancing, acting, style etc.
I do not think she was overatted especially just before she died.

yes she was, but she had style, class, and beauty all the things that females in music are drastically lacking these days.
