Aaliyah and Alicia Keys aren't even the same type of artists so why compare the two? Beyonce and Ciara? Yep, I'll take Aaliyah over either of them. Beyonce has NO control over her voice, and Ciara won't be around long.

I'm talkin about talent...

Aaliyah is average, not great...

Beyonce has a way MORE powerfull voice (a real soulfull voice)

You talk like Aaliyah had an extraordinary voice...

Common... lol

Her voice wasn't that great...

To me she's overrated definitely...

Talent is not always about how big and powerful your voice is, you know.

Like would I rather take Aaliyah over Beyonce? Who had a "better" voice with respect to my ears? Aaliyah. Beyonce can wail like a banshee but she can't make me care. Can you imagine her absolutely massacring "I Care 4 U"?

Aaliyah didn't have a strong over powering voice but she had a very pleasant soothing voice. One thing definitely liked was that she didn't sing LOUD and she didn't riff all up and down to get her point or emotion across. The beat could be hard as hell but she was always sounded cool relax. Even with her dancing... she was smooth.

Exactly! I think people think that because she doesn't wail and scream and do a million riffs that her vocal ability was weak. Aaliyah was great. I liked her voice a lot and loved that her voice wasn't so over the top. I hate all that hootin n' hollerin.

Yeah, I hear all three of her albums as wholes were nothing to rave about, but I also hear "Aaliyah" was probably the best (judging from those three singles, I'd say so myself), and when you combine that with her beauty, her acting skills, her dancing, her pretty voice, etc., it's a total shame she never got to fully flourish. I hope she's still resting in peace. sad

I love "Rock The Boat".

nod That song and video is beautiful and freaky as hell.

see..i hear the song and i think, "blah" mid-tempo song.....

did nothing for me...in fact, the chicks entire career did nothing for me...the beats and music were interesting.....i always thought, "wow these guys are making bjork music yet in an r&b vain"..

but it was never about her voice or her persona...

thats why i personally think she is overrated.... shrug it could have been anyone making them songs hits...

Aaliyah trumps all 3 of those women. Beyonce can't hold a candle to Aaliyah's voice, I'm sorry.

Alicia Keys needs to get that damn chip off her shoulder.

Ciara's dancing is way too awkward.

I was strictly speaking of the points brought up. To extend it further. Aaliyah was more than just a pretty face with a great voice. She was a great role model for young women. Her loss extended well beyond her great music. I don't think the other 3 names mentioned combined mean as much as Aaliyah did.

She was underrated during her life, severely overrated after her death.

The posthumous praise she's recieved has been waaay over the top, that's all I'll say on Aaliyah.

From my observation, I would say that Allayiah's and voice is mediocre compared to Beyonce's voice. Beyonce has more range and is more flexible vocally than hers. However, if Allayiah's time hadn't been cut so short, her vocal cords would have devloped more and her range would have increased. Thus, she would have gave Beyonce more competition.

As for Ciara, I would say that Beyonce and Alliayah have her beat. Ciara isn't nothing more than a damn studio enhanced pop tart.

Ok, I've had studied dance for many years. I've had Ballet,Jazz, Tap, Modern, and African. Also, I have performed with dance companies and was offered scholarships. Well, in the dance department, I would have to say that Beyonce and Aaliyah would've went toe to toe. The only thing that sets Beyonce apart from Ciara and Aaliyah is that she is more flexible, and has a lot of rhythm in her bones. Shit, you all can say what you want but Beyonce did get down with P on the Grammy's I'm sorry.

lol it could only happen on the org! Alicia Keys is over rated and Aaliyah is under rated.
Aaliyah is awesome, but Alicia writes her own music and is all round better musician than Aaliyah. Aaliyah never wrote any of her lyrics or produced her music, her music is a refection of her producers vision. She was a good pop star alas Ciara.

This is what I think...

Aaliyah has an average voice...

To me she was like Ciara is with a way better face and attitude...

And people rate her only because she was beutiful and humble...

Have you ever seen Aaliyah singing live ??

You know, I've seen Mariah Carey, Beyonce and Alicia live, and they all have great voices...

Sorry but great singers are always great live singers, and she wasn't...

She didn"t scream because she COULDN'T scream... Plain and simple..

I hate people who try to make Aaliyah a better singer than she really was, when you have a great voice you always try to use it to the max (you always try to scream or make a millions riffs and more often when you are a soul singer) And this is what Beyonce and Mariah do...

Once again I repeat if she looked like Ashanti and wasn't humble would you really say the same thing ??

Well she didn't get the chance to develop fully. Her last album had still a great number of "sneaker R'n'B" cuts, but she would have gone to a different direction. I've understood that she would have loved to have experimented with so called "white" music styles, and the excellent single "Rock The Boat" was quite different. I think she might have developed into a really good crossover artist who would have incorporated all kinds of styles into her music.

Aaliyah's sudden death was the first one that I actually reacted to with strong emotion.

I was driving and heard it on the radio and I just screamed "NO!". I was so sad.

She was my age when she died, we were born in the same year. I grew up with her music. I would listen to "At Your Best" everyday.

No, she's not overrated. I think people are really recognizing the awesome person she was in life, and that was reflected in her music. I love her.

Oh me too. nod I really liked Aaliyah. I felt like she sort of did her own thing, and had her own style. She didn't seem like a product that was created by someone else, and if she was, then she pulled it off really well.

I remember exactly what I was doing when I read that she died. It really affected me more than I thought it would. Too bad she's not here anymore. sad

I've seen those women sing live save for Alicia and singing live was never my particular issue and I never said Aaliyah was a great singer. I said exactly what I meant.

I disagree that if you have a great voice utilizing it to the max means screaming or making a million riffs but that's my feeling. Somehow people feel that only truly good singers do this and it's a misconception.

If she looked like Ashanti? While I'm not a fan of Ashanti I think she's pretty so I don't really see what looking like her has to do with anything.

Man, that is such BULLSHIT. Only show-off DIVAS who can't modulate their voices pull that shit. Do we see Kate Bush, Debbie Harry, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc. doing it? NO! Being a singer is not about screaming and warbling your way through a song.

If the worse you can say about Aaliyah is that she can't scream as well as Beyonce or Mariah, then that says tons more about your taste in music than her talent or what you perceive to be her lack of it. More often than not, good singing is about restraint rather than trying to blow the roof off. But, hey, if you want Mariah and Beyonce trying to outscream you to sleep, go for it!

Sorry but Aaliyah has a very average voice, I don't know how many octaves she has...
But she didn't seem to have a powerfull voice...

Look at Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, or Whytney Hosuton... They have great voices, and they don't sing average song, they sing very difficult song to sing...
Way more difficult that "Rock the boat", or "Try again"... Any average singer can sing Aaliyah songs... It's easy...

Alicia Keys impressed me, Beyonce (a lot of people hate her) is a fucking great singer, Mariah carey as well...

I don't want to debate on what is a great singer, but i repeat Aaliyah can't be compare to these artists, when she tried to sing higher she has no "power" in her voice, nothing... She can't sing long note too...

She's overrated, if she looked like Ashanti, nobody on this board would be "She was great" and all that kind of things...

I know that alot of people love her, but we got to speak the truth...

It doesn't seem that anyone has compared Aaliyah's voice to Celine, Aretha and Whitney other than you.

Again, I don't understand the comparing Aaliyah's looks to Ashanti.

Thank God everyone doesn't sound the same. I appreciate different types of singers, voices, music and stylings.
