its all relative. mariah has what madonna lacks in the vocal department so if you consider talent strictly in terms of perfecting your craft, then mariah is more talented. if you consider talent to be all inclusive - media spin, writing, live performance, etc then madonna is more talented. in my opinion, however, neither can successfully do what the other does.

ps - if i had to choose, it would be madonna by a landslide!

Mariah has far more gifts (voice, songwriting ability) than Madonna...BUT...Madonna has made much superior use of her gifts than Mariah has (and I speak as a huge fan of Mariah). Plus, Madonna is a much better entertainer than Mariah is, and like someone else said earlier, she is an innovator. Also, Madonna tends to be bold and experimental with her musical stylings while Mariah is usually more timid. Mariah will always be remembered for her vocal chops, but when it comes to legends, Madonna will be listed amongst the pantheon with Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, Prince, U2 and Nirvana.

I wasn't sure what the point of this was until Scorpion's 3rd post.
It then became obvious that this was just an excuse for some Madonna-rah at Mariah's expense.
That being the case, i'll just say this.

For someone who IMO...

Is not a great singer
Is not a great dancer
Is not a great actress
Last and least, not particularly attractive.

...Madonna has made quite a career for herself. Definitely raised the selling of image to an artform. I'll give her credit for that.

Mariah's talent is/was her voice.
There was a time in POP music when to be considered a vocalist, you had to be able to sing. Strange concept
(Dinah Washington, Rosemary Clooney, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Chaka Kahn, Jackie DeShannon, etc.)
These women could entertain an audience without expensive stage sets or Busby Berkeley-like dance productions.
Just with their voice. It seems that those days are long gone.

I prefer early Mariah Carey to past, present and probably future Madonna.
