I have to say that this was much more difficult than putting together an album list - I really started to struggle after 75. I have to confess that there are a few instances where I've included an artist on the basis of only really liking one or two albums.
My top four is completely boring and predictable - hopefully things get a little more intersting after that. 1 Bob Dylan 2 The Beatles 3 The Rolling Stones 4 The Velvet Undergound 5 Brian Eno 6 My Bloody Valentine 7 Pavement 8 Luna 9 The Go-Betweens 10 The High Llamas 11 The Fall 12 Yo La Tengo 13 The Undertones 14 Wire 15 Television 16 The Feelies 17 Pere Ubu 18 Can 19 Neu 20 John Cale 21 Plastikman/Richie Hawtins 22 Love/Arthur Lee 23 The Kinks 24 The Pretty Things 25 Scott Walker 26 Merle Haggard 27 Jimmie Dale Gilmore 28 Lyle Lovett 29 Spacemen 3 30 Kraftwerk 31 Marshall Crenshaw 32 Killing Joke 33 Neutral Milk Hotel 34 Faust 35 Gram Parsons/Flying Burrito Brothers 36 Nick Lowe 37 Big Star/Box Tops/Alex Chilton 38 Sonic Youth 39 Rodney Crowell 40 The Delgados 41 Ian Dury 42 Gene Clark 43 Julian Cope/The Teardrop Explodes 44 Pet Shop Boys 45 St. Etienne 46 Soft Machine/Robert Wyatt 47 Opal/Rain Parade/David Robacks 48 Lou Reed 49 The Blue Nile 50 Spiritualized 51 Tom Verlaine 52 Al Green 53 Galaxy 500 54 Drive-By Truckers 55 Mojave 3 56 Magnetic Fields/The Gothic Archies/Future Bible Heroes 57 Stereolab 58 The Handsome Family 59 Massive Attack 60 Pernice Brothers/Scud Mountain Boys 61 Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt 62 The Stooges 63 Lucinda Williams 64 The La's 65 Van Morrison 66 Prefab Sprout 67 Captain Beefheart 68 Throbbing Gristle/Coil/Psychic TV 69 Miles Davis 70 Prince 71 Nick Drake 72 Neil Young 73 The Faces/early Rod Stewart 74 Carol King 75 Elvis Costello 76 Paul McCartney 77 Gang of Four 78 The Modern Lovers/Jonothan Richman 79 Suicide/Alan Vega 80 Todd Rundgren 81 The Band 82 Randy Newman 83 The Triffids 84 The Saints 85 The Buzzcocks/Pete Shelley 86 Talking Heads 87 Richard Thompson (with and without Linda) 88 Aztec Camera 89 XTC 90 Pulp 91 Olivia Tremor Control 92 Tortoise 93 Belle and Sebastian 94 The Boo Radleys 95 Tindersticks 96 Cocteau Twins 97 John Lennon 98 The Shins 99 Lambchop 100 The Sea and the Cake [Edited 6/11/05 9:02am]

Wow…when I looked at your list the first thing I thought was “Did I have a blackout and post another list?” It was a moment of total cognitive dissonance, if you know what I mean. In fact I have to check: you’re sure you’re not me, right? In all seriousness, I love your list – how could I not since 1/3 of your list is on mine, and of the 2/3 that isn’t on mine, ½ of that could have been (hope that’s not too convoluted). I’m just thrilled that there’s another person on the face of the planet who remembers the Triffids. Especially i was delighted by Blue Nile!
They are amazing, just listened to Hats today. I love the first two Blue Nile albums, Hats in particular. I was less keen on Peace at Last, and apparently a new album was released about 1 ½ years ago – that remains unheard by me. There is also some names i'm not familiar with... Luna, The Feelies, Marshall Crenshaw, Jimmie Dale Gilmore?
Luna and the Feelies are VU style drone-rock bands. Luna bears a passing resemblance to Television as well – Tom Verlaine actually did some work on their 95 album Penthouse. If you ever come across Luna’s Bewitched album, I recommend it with no reservations – it’s tremendous. Marshal Crenshaw was one of the first power pop revivalists of the eighties. His first album is a real classic. If you like Matthew Sweet’s Girlfriend (I saw his name on your list) and Teenage Fanclub there’s no way you won’t love this record. The rest of Crenshaw’s catalogue is spotty – the debut is the one to have. Jimmie Dale Gilmore plays slightly spacey and very mellow country rock. If you took Gram Parsons, raised his voice an octave and gave his lyrics a slight Hindu bent, you’d have something that resembled Jimmie Dale Gilmore. [Edited 6/11/05 15:32pm]

I felt a little chagrined to be including the La's, cuz they only have one album - but it's quite an album, y'know, so I thought it ought to be recognized. And glad to see Prince got a mention. Well, that was one of the things I slightly agonized over. Ten years ago, Prince would have been in my top five - fifteen years ago, he was my number one without question. However, these days, barring occasionally dipping my toe into 1999 or SOTT, the only P record I listen to with any regularity is Come. Otherwise he's completely fallen off my radar, so I just didn't think I could rank him any higher than I did. I went through this thought process with more than a few bands/artists. At one time I bled David Bowie. Now I never listen to him. I kinda thought that I should at least acknowledge my one-time obsession, but then that would open the door to all kinds of bands I once used to love but have subsequently cooled on : The Smiths, Replacements, Jam, Roxy..so I said to hell with it and left them off.

I'm sure we are not only ones... how could anyone resist Wide Open Road or other gems on especially Born Sandy Devotional? I love the first two Blue Nile albums, Hats in particular. I was less keen on Peace at Last, and apparently a new album was released about 1 ½ years ago – that remains unheard by me. The latest one, HIGH, is really good. but to be honest, they havent been really exiting on the last two albums, but nevertheless IMO they still make majestetic pop music. but i really enjoy Peace at Last as well, so maybe High wouldnt do it for you. Oh, and thanks for the info. I will definately check out Marshal Crenshaw! ********************************************

I can't see that ever happening with Bowie and Prince for me, but I know what you mean. I have a hard time integrating in my mind what's important to me now and what deserves a mention for "all-time"'s sake. Of course, I don't have a finished list so why am I going on about it anyway.

How can you not root for this guy: he's 5'2" if we're being generous, ugliest thing you'll ever see in your life, obsessed with druids, dragons and castles. With all these strikes against him, he still manages to pull together some kind of career. That's the kind of thing that gives me hope for myself. Great list, by the way - I loved the second Prong album.
