i know it has its fans, so i will apologize for this up front (sorry!), but:

barf

it just felt like the cure was so far away from itself with that and wish and wild mood swings. i'm sure there's a lot of good material i'm not giving a chance by saying that, and 'join the dots' turned me on to some good recordings from that era, but 'mixed up' just isn't the kind of thing that represents why i love the cure.

though i will admit that 'never enough' is a semi-decent song, and i've always thought the 'fascination street' remix is The Deal. headbang

I have kind of a weird background with this album.

I first knew of The Cure in '87 and started buying their stuff in '89. I actually had Mixed Up before any of their older albums, even Staring at the Sea. And to my naive ears, I liked the newer, snazzier remixes way more than the old, dirgey originals. I still think most of the remixes are pretty decent as far as remixes go, and the extended versions just build upon the originals, so the album is half true to The Cure anyway. Most of the Cure fans that I knew at the time were like, "Geez, what do you like about it?" But now that I know all of their work, I wonder what it was that I was missing about their early work. Why didn't I connect with it right away. Perhaps cuz I was young and didn't know any better. Cuz now I hardly ever put on Mixed Up. I still listen to their old stuff all the time.

i liked the remixes i heard from 'kiss me' and 'disintegration'. they seemed to keep true to the mood of the original songs, and they didn't get too housey-clubby/generic. i'm very picky with remixes, especially with new wave/80s pop remixes. there was just so much crap done to so many good songs.

probably Staring at the Sea, just cuz i have so many great memories listening to that album. i agree that Greatest Hits was kinda pointless.

Yeah, to my knowledge the "Last Day of Summer" one is the album version.

If I knew how to do that yousendit business, I'd send you the "Out of This World" edit. smile

I don't even consider "Japanese Whispers" a compilation. I mean, it really could/should be viewed as a bona-fide stand-alone album these days.

You need to get back here and kick Gangsta's butt to the curb. He's edging in on all YOUR territory ~ Bowie, Bjork, The Cure, TORI for God Sake. You need to set that boy straight!!!!

is it kinda like how beta band's 'three e.p.s' album isn't considered a collection of singles as much as it is an album in its own right?

Nope. None of the songs from that album were hits. Although 3 of the songs were released as singles, promo mostly I think.

"Maybe Someday" was a U.S. top 10 modern rock hit if that means anything.

I think 'Greatest Hits' is okay for playing in the car when I don't have time to listen to both 'Standing On A Beach' and 'Galore'. It serves that purpose just like Prince's 'The Very Best Of Prince' and The Banshees' 'The Best Of Siouxsie And The Banshees'. Sometimes you want a slice, but not the whole cake.

I found the the acoustic disc in 'Greatest Hits' to be pretty lifeless, though. neutral

I like Mixed Up. It was my first introduction to their pre-Disintegration material and I fell in love with those remixes. To this day, I love the Tree Mix of "A Forest" every bit as much as the original. The only one I really struggle with on there is the remix of "Inbetween Days".

My main problem with 'Mixed Up' was that I had half of those tracks already from the 12" singles. I made my own revised album excluding the regular extended versions and in their place adding the remixed b-sides that didn't make it on there ("Let's Go To Bed", "Primary" and "Just Like Heaven") as well as the 86 extended version of "Boys Don't Cry" and the live version of "Disintegration" from the "Pictures Of You" CD (which I always felt was superior to the album version). I also put them all in chronological order. I like listening to it a lot more this way.

I like this one the best. smile

It's the first Cure album I ever bought. And since it was in cassette form, it included the B-sides on side 2.

It was "just like Heaven". music

Them other ones are cool too, but I like this one the best.
