Avril Lavigne sells a lot of records believe it or not, so she wouldn't be dropped yet.

Excatly....I know it seems like many people can't stand her but the public (and more importantly, Clear Channel) still like her enough to buy a decent amount of discs. She isn't going anywhere based on the last disc.

Damn, I can think of quite a few!

Limp Bullshit (who the hell still listens to them)?
Unkle Cracker (name one person you know that likes his music)
Kid Rock (i think his time is up)
Michelle Branch (does she sell records)?
Nickelback (have they had any new hits)?
Puddle of Mud (hasn't anyone told them grunge is over)?

Mainly it's all the played out rap/rock crap. It's done and over with. Why are these artists still signed? I suppose they have some "hardcore fans" but still....

Is Clear Channel a person? That terrible remake of "Drift Away" got radio play for almost a year solid but I don't think that means the disc sold.

Michelle Branch (does she sell records)?
I think so....I know "Happy Now" was a hit?

Nickelback (have they had any new hits)?
Shockingly, I think their follow up did OK.

The others, even though some might still be selling decently enough, I coudln't agree with more. Rock has been going through some tough times and frankly if these guys go on the chopping block (hell, they all should!) it wouldn't be a lose. I wouldn't be surprised if Limp "choses" to go indie since people lost interest after the last one big time! Ego out of control and I'm sure the sex tape won him no fans!

I'm no Jeff Buckley fan but I sure as hell would rather listen to him any day over these buffoons. I'm sure he had more talent in one strand of his hair than all these "artists" combined.

I'm truly amazed that Unkle Craker hasn't been dropped. I've heard a few of his songs before and it did absolutely nothing for me. I might as well have just been listening to pure silence. First of all, didn't he get a record deal by association of Kid Rock? He's probably a cool guy and all but I can't see myself listening to his jams.

I really like the song "everywhere" by Michelle Branch. It was a great pop rock song and very cathcy. I also like that she keeps her clothes on and plays the guitar but I can't really see her lasting long in this business.

By the way, I don't know if Train still has a record deal but if they do, it should be revoked immediately!

I actually can't think of anyone who isn't selling that is still on a label. Seems like alot of people were dropped during the label mergers and the major label rosters are already really small.

What was the mariah thing again? She got paid to leave EMI? Then what do emi do (about the last major independant left), they go and blow obscene amounts on boy (band) wonder robbie williams? confused

Mariah was dropped by Virgin after Glitter.

I think Michelle Branch got pregnant as of recent....

Anyways she was pretty successful with "Everywhere" "All you Wanted" and "Are you Happy now?"
And don't forget her Santana collaboration "Game of Love."

Nick Carter is probably dropped as a solo artist. I don't think they'll make that same mistake twice (and at this rate, I don't see that somewhat hyped Backstreet reunion coming out anytime soon..are they on tour?). They are giving JC another shot, which kind of makes sense because he had a lot of postive hype and the few people that bought the album really seemed to enjoy it.

Backstreet's new song "Incomplete" is No. 28 on Billboard after two weeks on the chart (it debuted at No. 55). It will probably jump substantially again this week since it gained about 1,000 new spins on radio, and download sales are strong. They finished their mini-tour this month, and they start an arena tour in July, so the reunion's a go for sure. Also, I got most of the new songs on studio-quality MP3, and they're really quite a change stylistically. The album probably won't be the commercial blockbuster of years past, but most artists aren't selling a million in the first week anymore, anyway, so I think they'll do very respectable numbers, and deservedly so. It's really a good album. I've been a Backstreet fan for a while, and with any artist that I enjoy a lot, I fear a new album will pale in comparison to past releases, but BSB's new songs far surpass most of the old.

Again, I'm not sure how and if his stuff sells but it's very safe and pedestrian (his only memorable single is his slightly uptempo first single "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" but that went nowhere)...gotta love him! Train is another safe radio act (possibly the kings of "hard emo rock", may it rest in peace forever!) and they possibly still sell records....Don't ask me....

Did you also know that Michelle is married to like a forty year old....the heart wants....

That's some news to me! I've never heard it. In fact, the only pop station left is long gone and the current hit music station plays almost exclusively hip-hop...not that I'm dying to hear this but am curious about what's going on. I'm not a fan, but let them do what they're gonna do....

Yeah I heard her old man is an old man, haha! biggrin that's cool I suppose. I'm just curious to see how long she will last along with Vanessa Cralton. Though I coul see Vanessa Carlton hanging in there a bit longer since she plays piano.

On the R&B/Soul side, any artist who has real commercial potential but takes way too long to follow up on moderately successful hits, like, say, Maxwell or Res. It's like, come on, people, it's not as if you've got to make a followup to Thriller. Get a move on!!!

That's cold but probably true. I think that both Res and Maxwell are artists that will have longevity and the record companies recognize that. Not the best sales, but not the worst....

Perhaps because their music was good? Also, their album has gone platinum in the US. Not bad for a debut artist coming from Scotland! They are a huge success story- why would they be dropped?

BJORK

Björk has a loyal group of fans that will buy anything she produces. She's in no danger of being dropped- nor should she be.

What about someone like Ginuine? He really hasn't had any recent hits and I think the ones he's had so far have been minor. Now that Usher has become so popular I doubt he'll really have a chance at being "huge".

Michael is too vested in sony, he'll probably be with them for life.. Even if he sells now, he'll still own 25 percent of the ATF catalog which is around 200 mil. Plus Mike has the highest royalty rate in music, so there's no reason to leave.

Well, they are 2 of my favorite contemporary artists, but dag, why does it take you so long. For example, Maxwell's pauses between albums (3-4 years at a time) don't really do a whole lot for the quality (good, not truly great, albums).
