Anniemal - Hype of the year After hearing RAVES about this album, here and everywhere, I decided to check it out. And I just don't get it. Silly lyrics set to hooks with no guts, sung by the thinnest voice imaginable, backed up by blippy beats and sounds that are so cutesy they're sickening.
It's no Postal Service. It's no Tom Tom Club. Heck, it's not even up to Gwen's level. Just curious what fans like about it... [Edited 4/25/05 15:29pm]

Is this why she was dropped from her U.S. label? I admit though that I did like some of the samples I had heard. Then again, I also like Geri Halliwell so that's no big surprise.

I knew there was a thread where people were gushing, but that's a lot of love! I'll sit with it a little more. But it just doesn't catch my ear for some reason. Very flat-footed rhythmically, and not very interesting chord-wise either. It just sounds like a bad impression of St. Etienne.

Some of my appreciation of it is admittedly due to her background experience and mine. She struggled to make this album as she had lost her boyfriend and collaborator due to a heart birth defect. He was 23. She was going to complete the album with him and then went into seclusion to recover. The fact that she is able to have the positive attitude she has ("Come Together") is awe-inspiring to me, particularly because I lost my father and both of my grandmothers in rather excrutiating manners within the last 13 months. The album has been a great source of inspiration for me. "My Heartbeat" is particuarly moving to me considering the way her boyfriend died. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! It has just been an incredibly beneficial listen for me this year, as has Funeral by the Arcade Fire. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! grammar edit [Edited 4/25/05 16:04pm] I like Geri, too, so it sounds right up my alley. So this won't be released in America? That's sad! No faith in dance pop here.

It's pretty good. I like it better than I thought I would. And it's better than most of the others doing it in the same genre right now.

What I had heard was that even though the label thought the Anniemal album was very good, it was too pop to fit in with their roster of other artists (Bloc Party, The Stills, etc.). Where? That would be a cool thing to see you in the video. I'm totally blurred because of the playing speed. It might just as well be anyone else. They just didn't have too many extras so my friend asked me to come.
