Read above. If you had read the post I was responding to, you would know full well why I brought it up.

But what exactly is the point ? I mean , you can go to a hard-core Country hangout, and people there might say they don't like Tony Bennett. Or go to the Opera, and most people might not appreciate Otis Redding. Or a Hip-Hop club, where they wouldn't be into Miles Davis. just because a particular group doesn't like or understand a style of music doesn't mean that it's not good.
So if most Blacks don't like Green Day (who, BTW, had one of the best CDs of 2004) or Nirvana, well , that's their loss. The same if whites can't appreciate James Brown because they can't learn the conventions of the idiom he's working in .

And it's interesting that your response is on a board devoted to a Black artist who counts as his influences Joni Mitchell and Led Zeppelin and The Beatles (none of whom must be any good by your standards snce they never had a huge Black following). He's open-minded enough to see their merits. To quote anoter great black musician with multi-cultural influences : "Free your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow" ....

What i don't understand is that blaqueknight is saying that all blacks hate any shouting , hollering unless its james brown? Well no offence, but u are more close minded then me in saying that blacks are so close minded that they think all this "shouting" rock is shit? I suppose u speak for a race do u? That is bullshit. And apparantly everyone has to agree with blaque as he has knowledge of these things. Voicescarrey for example, u agree with that? U a sheep or something?

So thanx to blaques wisdom of reading what must of been some stupid racist ass books, some of u think blacks do not accept any form of rock music because apparantly it's all bullshit and is not james brown?

There is a long list of singers that the U.S. black community probably won't have in their stereo systems.

I know u say proberly, but come on? U are hugley stereotyping here. Maybe in USA things are like that. Fuck knows.....

stupid thread. zero stars.

Why is it a stupid thread? His questions holds a lot of validity. When Brittney does an R&B tune it immediately gets labeled Pop. If Brittney had done "Full Moon" by Brandy, it would be considered a pop song, so, yes, the media/record companies do manipulate things such as what to call a song by who sings it? I have no problem with white artists "stealing" from Black artists, just as long as they give credit where the credit is due. I like Joss and she gives her respects to soul music, and you can't deny Justin's influence from Black culture and he gives his respect as well. It's the record companies that create the gap.

Well, Elvis was talented BUT Elvis did steal A LOT of his moves from Chuck Berry and JB, so don't be misled into thinking he didn't. And Chuch D. was right, Elvis did harbor some racist feelings. Now, either you're uncomfortable with this subject matter because YOU yourself may harbor similiar feelings, I don't know, but to make blanket statements without knowing facts is foolish in itself.

Tell me you're not this dumb. I REFUSE to believe that in the year 2005 that someone this IGNORANT STILL exists. The funny thing is, THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL YOU'D SAY THIS TO A GROUP OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS...and you KNOW why you wouldn't.

No "maybe" to it, HE DID STEAL A LOT OF MOVES/GYRATIONS from Chuck and JB -- FACT. I mean, you can't sit here and say Prince didn't steal from JB and Jimi, can you? No. So keep it real and REALIZE ELVIS STOLE FROM CHUCK AND JB. And I'm cool with Chuck liking Elvis, no harm there, it's his life. And naw, most racists hide. Ya know what I'm sayin'? wink

Cool. My collection of music (as varied as it is wink ) proberly consists of say 90% black music with 5% white and 5% latino (hey gotta love steive b and george lamond), but I, as all of us I would hope agree, never ever even thought about what colour the dude on the cover may be. I just happen to mostly dig music by black people.

Chuck berry likes to film people taking shits apparantly. Anyone remember this? biggrin

Uk is slow and our lil' country just got to see the jacko/jefferson south park. Funny stuff. Particually about the police and framing rich black people. And the "thats ignorant" spew that jacko keeps saying. But they actually agreed with him and suggest he is innocent. Which surprised me.....so that was cool!

I admit I hate the covers he does. Though "lean on me" is passable.

Now I understand if u think the songs are crap, but luckily Michael Bolton was never overated so he gets away with his covers on this topic.

And yes I do not mind the song "love is a wonderful thing". Anyway, Mike may of fucked people off with this, but he had balls.

u c theres my problem. i agree with u but Iam so naive musically that I just like the song even if it is supposed crap. I understnad if anyone really do hate those covers (and I do too) but tracks such as "love is a wonderful thing" (where he got sued on) are just tracks I seem to like regardless of the hate it got. I know alot of people who just hate something just because it either looks crap on the cover, or someone told them it's crap. That I think is blaqueknights problem with assuming all balck people hate bands like greenday or whatever.

What was the deal with "love is a wonderful thing"? My dad says he got sued by the isley brothers or something?

THAT'S what I was referring to. Bolton JUST STOLE THE ENTIRE SONG. Dude obviously stole the song and re-titled it...the Isley's sued and they won.

When will you get your head out of your ass. I have family members that are cops. I can tell you there are a lot of ways to bring a person down without giving them a skull fracture and if the cops were so justified in what they were doing. Why did they lie about it and say the Hundai was going a 100 miles an hour.

They knew they had screwed up big time and a CHP officer testified aganist them in the trail. Any normal person in law enforcement would never support these officers.

Maybe its an american thing to get into such a discussion about black-white, good-bad, stealing, racism etc...but I find it very overwrought.....

In a earlier response on this thread i allready said that music is a 'crossover'-thing, cultures and therefore musical styles interfering with eachother... Building further on that: if some of you want to make an interracial discussion about this, thats fine, but dont 'abuse' facts and developments to make a point, it wont help you further.

I did read a comment in here that all popmusic is all black in origin, but thats nonsense. When you look at the way how popular music has developed, you can see all kind of influences being mixed together, both 'black' and 'white' and definitely not all popular music is from black origin (Oh god, how i hate those words, the world is multicoloured wink ):
- Country-music finds his roots in mostly Irish musicians who brought their music with them when they immigrated to America (white?)
- Irish music finds his roots in celtic music: the celts are nomad people who travelled during the ages from north india, trough eastern europe and settled themselve in Ireland (eastern / white)
- Rock and Roll mixes country-influences (white) with R&B aspects (black)
- The melodic pop of the Beatles was a mixture of black (the rythems) and white (the melodies ranging back to classical european music and english skiffle). During their psychedelic period eastern influences came into their sound.
- Sly and the Family Stone did mix rock (white?) with soul (black?) and psychedelica (white?)
- George Clinton and Prince were artists who continued on this path, combining black, white (and sometimes eastern) influences, creating 'colourblind' music.
- The house / dance movement finds his roots in black musicians from detroit being influenced by german synth artist like Kraftwerk (talking about music crossing all boundaries...) and it were mostly white, european DJ's who did built further on this style
- Postmodern artists like Beck and NERD mix all kinds of music without seeming to care if its 'black' or 'white'

I think the thing that is happening here in this thread that people are 'using' music to bring up racial issues, when the fact is that music has developed allready past that stage....

What's your point ? Because most Blacks don't listen to Joni Mitchell (which is probably correct) then she's worthless ? Is theBlack community (of which you are the designated spokesman) the final arbiter of all Musical worth ?Because most Opera fans don't like Wilson Pickett, then is he worthless, too ?
The only reason you points are misunderstood is because they don't make sense !
