....I mean, Jennifer Lopez cant sing, and delivers mediocre music...but its her ass and figure that make the deal

Mariah Carey mistakes 'soul' with 'wailing', but its ultimately her short skirts and cleavage that give her attention

Gwen Stefani is a very mediocre singer and artist, but its her video's and fashionstyle that give her profits.....

Sorry, i cant take that kind of superficiality serious, it doesnt touch me....

Eroticist, give me some arguments for that?

The real danger for me is 'pre-fab' artists brought out by record-companies just to make money..

I can give you the best example of all time = MTV.

When MTV launched in the early 80's, MTV didn't play ANY Black artists except MJ and Prince. ONLY 2. So are YOU gonna tell me there were ONLY 2 BLACK MUSIC ARTISTS IN MUSIC IN THE EARLY 80s?

Just this statement alone shows that either you listen with your eyes or you have a tin ear. Go download "Vision Of Love". If you can repeat that statement after listening to that song, that pretty much sums you up as an incompetent judge of soul/r&b music. Mariah was a solid investment for Sony. Her talent is not questionable AT ALL. She screwed up her image, her attempts at popdom have been horrible failures and about 40% of her catalog of songs is crappily produced and not fit for her vocals. The thing is, when Mariah is on, SHE'S ON! She's on point with any of the "divas" of today (not 80s on back but 90s and forward). Mariah has made some horrible career choices. She's not the brightest bulb in the bag, but to drop her down with J-Lo and Gwen is a bad call on any level. The woman would sing circles around the both of them, vocally set fire to those circles and then blow out that fire with her voice. I really like Gewn. She's got something special. She's not the best at anything but she's got a great understanding of who she is an has great direction. J-Ho should just go back to that begging ass goofball Sean "Fluffy" Combs and give up showbiz. Its too many idiots that keep paying her bills. If folks really want her to go away, they would stop buying her sh*t and showing up at her shows. Her ass has carried her a long way. Even with Mariah's f*cked up choices, if you put all three of these women in a single room with a mic and told them they had to play "cuttin' heads" for their souls, two of these heifers would be going to hell, and Mariah would be walking out the door. She can sing. Even if you don't like WHAT she sings or HOW she sings, to say that she can't sing is just flat out wrong. Sony offered her a multi-million dollar multi album deal. More than ANY of the artists you named including Lucinda Williams and Van Morrison. Yes. It is fact. Look it up. Obviously they thought she was a sound investment. Before she went nuts on them. It is that distinguishing of personal tastes from ability that you seem to shoot yourself in the foot with. I can't stand Celine Dion's work, yet i respect her ability. She is a world class vocalist and can sing some of these R&B b*tches off the stage. I respect her skillz. Just because you like an artist or because they make you feel good doesn't mean they are skillfull. Just because an artist isn't doing what you like doesn't mean that they suck. Before you try and say the same thing applies to what I said about Green Day and Nirvana, understand that I have heard both bands live. Nirvana on quite a few occasions. If you can't even scream in key with a song, YOU SUCK as a singer. Lars (Metallica) can scream and growl in key. Kurt was in touch with the angry white male generation of the 90s. He wrote about his anger and frustration and that's what made him who he was. He was NOT a great singer. End of f*ckin' story.

Laura, what i am trying to say is that some black people still think that white artists are overrated, when thats not the case..... it borders on paranoia to say things like that...

Personally, Van Morrison touches me more then Marvin Gaye, but that has NOTHING to do with Van being white, just personal taste...And please dont tell me you are so naive to think that music critics rule out Marvin Gave either...

To emphasize my point....look at all those "top-100 records of all time" lists that appaer regularly: Most of the time Marvin Gaye's 'whats going on' is in the top 10, and yes 'Astral Weeks' of Van Morrison mostly is too (it isnt my favorite record of him, by the way). In those lists records as James Brown - Live at the Appollo, and several Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Wonder records score high too, next too the likes of Radiohead, Nirvana and The Beatles...

I think some peeps in here are really wrong: in ways of thinking that white artist get more praise then black artists, because thats bullshit. In the end its all about good music....

-----
Sorry only a few black artist make it into the Top 100. Loads of really talented black artist and bands will never make it because they can't get the record deal in the first place or any exposure on the radio if they are not rapping and acting like a damm clown.

People on this board have called Marvin Gaye a one hit wonder. Why do you think they think because MG does not get the same respect as Elvis. Hell Sam Cooke does not the same repect as Elvis.

I mean you think Mariah Cary wails when in reality she can sign her ass off.
I don't care for her material but, the girl can sing and black people just don't get the credit for just being talented.

I agree except I think Mariah Carey's material is good though.

Blaque Knight, no offense but barely any black artists are putting out good material these days. Most of the white people out these days are makin good music. Most of it is rap and rb. And rap is really giving a bad name to black people. As for rb, its crappy.

Eroticist, Nowadays on MTV you mostly see black rappers- and r&b artists with crappy tunes, surrounded by roundbottomed bimbo's, showing their 'bling-bling'.
And some 'alternative' rock bands like good charlotte, Creed and lifehouse, which arent alternative at all, but way too polished sounding, almost as pre-frab as the Britney's and Jessica's.

MTV is part of the music-industry, and as the word 'industry' allready states MTV is playing the songs that sell, promoting material that makes money, and i must say, most of that material is mediocre, samey crap. But commerce = commerce, and hey...when the people buy it, the record companies are happy...

Look outside those billboard charts and you will find way better musicians who maybe dont make the bucks (for their record companies, that is) but are more endearing, enjoyable, original then all those fake-gangsta rappers and suburban, good looking guys hanging out 'the punk'....

This coming from someone with the name "Bootylicious". Hrmph. rolleyes But, I digress.

Van Hunt, David Ryan Harris, Maysa, Conya Doss, MINT Condition, Sananda, Anthony Hamilton, Donnie, Javier, Dwele, Kem, Amp Fiddler, Rhian Benson, Aya, Vivian Green, Amel Larrieux, Heather Headley...damn I could go on and on with artists that are putting out good music. STOP LETTING THE MEDIA FEED YOU. LOOK FOR GOOD MUSIC. DON'T BE AFRAID TO LISTEN TO SOMEONE YOU'VE NEVER SEEN A MUSIC VIDEO FOR (or even heard of, for that matter). That's what's wrong with everybody. Everyone is waiting for Mtv/BET/VH-1/Clear Channel & Much Music to tell them who's out there. All this "there's no good music out" bullshit while new artists drop stuff every day is sickening. Ignorance is sickening. Look up some of the artists I named and tell me there are no good artists out. That's bullshit. Even Mya had a good pop R&B CD last year and she got overlooked. Her CD came with a freaking CALANDAR! If you only eat what's put on your plate, its your own fault for believing that's the only food in the cubbard. You have to go LOOK FOR YOURSELF.

Awww...Wittle Wiverpoet is mwad because EMP-Tv has betwrayed hwim!
"mostly black rappers"? Well if you call in and request White Boy, Bubba Sparks and Paul Wall, maybe they'll play them more. They sure as hell played the shit out of Eminem didn't they? You have a problem with "ethnic" music. Too bad. Taste of what black folk went through many many many years before.

Blaqueknight, i guess you did misunderstood maybe i should not put the word 'black' in my post but just typed: rappers and r&b artists with crappy tunes, surrounded by big bottomed girls showing their bling, bling.

I also pointed on these crappy, so called alternative white, rock bands..

And no, i dont blame MTV....i am just saying how the music-industry and MTV are going for 'the money'. When it did and does come to my musical taste, i never relied on those kind of things, i use my ears, read magazines, and am open to word-to-word promotion.

I really dont understand why you are making the assumption i dont like 'etnic' music, because thats nonsense, in my cd collection Sly, George Clinton, Prince, Living Colour, Parliament, Miles Davis, Yousou n'dour and the Afro Cuban All stars are there, next to REM, Lyle Lovett, Matthew Sweet, Van Morrison, Kate Rusby and Joni Mitchell...

And next to that: i have 'coloured' friends and colleagues i go on with very well.

Sorry, but next time think a bit longer before youre typing things that arent right and grieving even.....

For you to sit there and say "no offense but barely any black artists are putting out good material these days. Most of the white people out these days are makin good music." is idiotic at best and completely wrong at worst. Your screen name suggests that you only listen to the Run-Of-The-Mill R&B artists like Destiny's Child and not people like BK mentioned. So uh, yeah...ya name has A LOT to do with it.

But just so I won't post this in vain, let me give you a list of BLACK R&B ARTISTS that you need to add to your "BOOTYLICIOUS" collection:

Van Hunt, Raphael Saadiq, Maya Azucena, Carmen Rodgers, Geno Young, N'Dambi, Briggete McWilliams, Alison Crockett, Floetry, Adriana Evans, Davina, Cherokee, Peven Everette, Ledisi, Martin Luther, Maxwell, Amp Fiddler, Rahsaan Patterson, Donnie, Bilal, Kindred, India Arie, and Jill Scott...for starters.

THEY'RE ALL BLACK. Now, go take ya bootylicious ass on into to ya local wrecka stow and hunt these artists down.

Class dismissed.
