Eminem ain't overrated. He's acutally a dope lyricist and tight MC. Cant nobody fuck with his wordplay. Vanilla Ice didnt really have skills. He was just another medicore rapper. If he had the same success Eminem did, then Ice would've been overrated.

-----
Do you really think Eminem get so much praise because he is just a good MC or do you think he gets it because he is white. Elton John is going around comparing him to Jimi Hendrix. Time Maganzine put in as one of the most influencial artist.

Do you think Time would have done that for "Chuck D" or Public Enemy.

Justified is a very good album...

If you have never listened to any Michael Jackson or Stevie Wonder albums...

Oh please. Neither of those two were ever totally original, only very good at what they did. Michael Jackson made GREAT music, but his star rose because of media hype more than the quality of his music ("Who's bad?").

I am not denying them their rightful place in the musical arena, but let's give Justin some time to grow, shall we? Let's remember the days when prince was advertised as 'the new Stevie Wonder'.

Justin has got the same talent as Michael Jackson; he picks the right producers and knows how to play the media.
And I think that copying is a form of flattery. Besides, let's not get into the fact that Justified is the album The Neptunes produced for Michael Jackson but he turned it down.

I see there are still a lot of white people trying to pretend that racism in the music industry no longer exists. That's bull, regardless to how you FEEL. Feelings don't always equal up to reality. Facts dictate results. Facts - white people like to see white people in the media. This is not really racist, its a simple fact of life. Black people like to see black people, asians to asians, etc. Since the media is controlled by white people and jews who are seeking to market to white people, it is only common sense that a lack of balance would exist. Its also very common for whites to "upgrade" white artists who do R&B and hip hop. As long as they are asthetically pleasing (Eminem as opposed to Bubba Sparks) and retain a degree of pop mentality and mass appeal, there are tons of supporters who are willing to lie and claim they are better than they actually are to support their credibility. It makes sense to the labels because MORE WHITE PEOPLE BUY MUSIC. Sorry brothas & sistas, but its true. A fact in this country. Labels go where the money flows. They are very racist against anything that's not green. The fact is MOST white artists doing R&B get immediately overrated for the reasons mentioned above. As Anxiety said, when the hype dies down, do you think their CDs get dusted off after a couple of years? Hell no. By then, the industry is marketing a new artist to fawn over, and the masses eat him/her up. They ALMOST always do.
You can always tell the sincere white artists; they are the ones with the smallest album sales (Teena, Jon B., etc.) and they are the ones who keep on doing what they do anyway because they love it. Props to them.

Co-Sign. You hit the nail on the head. Big Props to Teena and Jon B because they deserve it.

If a black woman tried to make it in the industry based on pure vocal talent, and was saddled with Joss Stone's voice...HAH! I doubt it. But Joss looks like she belongs in an A&F catalogue, and so she is inherently marketable; furthermore, her innocuous "urban/soul" music can be played 24/7 at all Gap locations nationwide.
[Edited 4/13/05 19:42pm]

Joss is the latest example of this. nod

The funny thing is, I 'd rather hear Joss than most "so-called r&b singers today . like Beyonce or Mary J Blige , who is often way off-key (Did you hear Mary J on that Tsunami special a few months ago ? Painful) Joss sings more like a real Soul singer like her mentor Betty White, than these howling r&b thrushes who twaddle on and on with their overdone melisma .

And looks always count in music, especially these days. Do you think Beyonce would be as big as she is today if she looked liked Martha Wash ??

as soon as i get home, i'm gonna throw all my CDs out the window. i don't have the space for so much disrespect.

I am SO glad U said that! Conversely, I wonder if Martha Wash would b as well respected if she looked like Beyonce? Consumers of all races r not only lead by marketing, they are consumed by it. Which is why we have discussions like this. Teena Marie (like Dusty Springfield before her) came about before the advent of MTV, back when listening was the actual point of enjoying a record. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if Joss Stone's record came out 25 years ago, she'd b hailed as the second coming of Aretha. Yep, I said it and I'm not taking it back! cool

What I do not understand is that some people on this thread don't like the artists because the MEDIA overrates them. Don't like them because the artists don't do the music you like not because the MEDIA likes or dislikes them.
I also have never heard of a "Black Music" genre of music.
You have to be a free thinker. Like what you like not what someone else tells you to like.

Something that I notice through the years, everytime you see a white artist doing some good music, the Media always overrate him...

Back in the day it was Elvis Presley who was titled the King of Rock n Roll...
(Everybody know that he's not, Little Richard or Chuck Berry deserve the title)

More close to us, Eminem the first rapper doing big in the rap game, and every media think he's the best rapper (To me Nas he's ten times more talented)

And the last is Justin Timberlake who was titled by Rolling Stone "The New King Of Pop" after he released his first album...

Why the White media don't respect the Black Architects ???

PS : I'm not a racist... wink
[Edited 4/13/05 18:04pm]

I think you mean white artists doing "black" music, not
"white" artists doing black music

I know it's nitpicking, but it changes the meaning a lot.

Oh, you don't have to take it back. Because the UK press already did that when they were hyping her first release 2 years ago. Which only proves that she certainly would not have been hyped as such 25 years ago, when acts like Teena Marie would have laughed her off the stage, and when she would have been completely drowned out by a Rick James production. That Joss Stone is supposed to be the best thing modern soul has going for it is a frightening prospect indeed.

That is so true . 20 years ago (Pre MTV), singers actually had to have talent. Now it's all a lot of hype. Back in the day (God, I'm sounding like such an old fogey bastard !) you could get by with a great voice and a lack of glamourous looks. Take Aretha, Mavis Staples, Betty Wright (got it right this time !), and even Janis Joplin and Dusty Springfield.
These days, they try to pass off Jennifer Lopez as a "singer" and musical figure, when I could probably find a girl on any subway train in New York who sings just as good as she does !!

Lisa Stansfield's music was (and I suspect still is) mature-- the kids don't gravitate to that. Also she's been around for awhile so they're not going to push her like the new girls. Besides, Lisa got some airplay back in the day. She just happened to be one of the few artists that deserved the hype and has been able to make a good living doing what she presumably loves.

That was rhetorical wasn't it? lol
