JAZZ or FUNK - which do you like MORE? I love me some funk. But I notice that, as a genre, it's usually buried as a sub-category of some other style; R&B, Urban, Dance, whatever. So, I'm wondering, have I grown to dig a music style that has become so underground that it's more obscure than jazz?
Jazz, being the wierd doodlybop shit, not that Kenny G quiet-storm crap. But, well, I spose that counts as jazz too right? Cast your vote. Which one is more popular do you think? And no, you can not vote BOTH. You must choose, young skywalker. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

i prefer funk, i guess because it has more soul/rock influences, and because i can follow the melodies and rhythms easier. i've always had a difficult time with jazz, with a few exceptions (most notably, coltrane) - i know that skillwise, it's really impressive stuff - it just makes me crazy to listen to it for too long...funk, however, i can flow with much easier.

FUNK
I appreciate jazz, but I can never get hooked by it. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I love both, but jazz covers far more of the music spectrum and has much deeper levels.

Jazz definetly comes in more forms than "doodleybop shit" or Kenny G..... Would you call Sade's "Is it a crime?" Doodleybop shit?

I dig both for different reasons. I like funky jazz, and jazzy funk.
And heyyylll NO, Kenny G. is NOT jazz. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Hmmm, this is really tough. I probably listen to funk more often but when I'm in the mood for jazz it moves me more than any other type of music. I really like the cross-pollinations of the two though and most of my favorite artists have a little of both. I know it's a cop-out, but I just can't choose. I guess you could say I lean closer to funk cuz I'm in the mood for it more often but I have an equal respect/appreciation/overall fondness for both.

If you like them both...you don't have to choose.

Since following the grand timeline it could be said that Jazz begat Funk, i'd prefer the Momma rather than the Baby.
Also, Jazz really isn't weird unless you don't understand it. If through music my ultimate destination was money and fame, then Jazz would not be the vehicle I would choose. If through music my ultimate destination was to improve my musicianship within the art form, imo, Jazz requires the most dedication to one's chosen instrument coupled with the ability to think on your feet (improvisation). As intimated in the Ken Burns JAZZ documentary, the ordeal of the Jazz musician is having to create a "masterpiece by midnight"...every night. " I want the funk, the whole funk, nothing but the funk." Exactly. I can deal with a little jazz sometimes but only if it has a little swing to it. When it gets too mellow, it's time for me to go. Andy is a four letter word.

" I want the funk, the whole funk, nothing but the funk." Sounds like you've been victimized by Snooze jazz. Try this... ...Thrust - Herbie Hancock FUNK in the hands of JAZZ professionals. It's all Music to me, ...
Labels are so limiting to music when it's evolving constantly. There's Jazz that I dig , and Funk, but I gotta choose, so I'm going with the Jazz genre as it's BIGGER in range. The voodoo of Funk , with it's scratch guitar rhythms gets me as the one part of Funk I can't pass by as a groove. Funk is very grounding I feel. Jazz the opposite, ethereal. ~PClinuxOS~ I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... I drop in from time to time, ...
