NEW YORK - James Brown, the "Godfather of Soul" and a legend in rap, rock and funk, has announced that he has prostate cancer.

In a statement released to The Associated Press on Friday morning, Brown, 71, said that he will undergo surgery for the ailment on Dec. 15.

"I have overcome a lot of things in my life. I will overcome this as well," Brown said.

Brown, best known for seminal hits like "I Feel Good," "Please, Please, Please," and "Cold Sweat," is also a diabetic. Dubbed the hardest working man in show business, he just finished a two-week Canadian tour on Thursday night. He is expected to spend three weeks recovering from the procedure.

Earlier this year, he faced other troubles when he was charged with domestic abuse after an altercation with his wife. The allegation was resolved when he failed to contest the charge.

Brown is due to release an autobiography next month. Besides promoting the project with a slew of appearances, he still plans a tour of Asia and Australia early next year.

Poor guy, i wish him all the best.

Hearing all these people with prostate cancer now in days makes me fear getting it as well, or any cancer.

Yes, I know what you mean. Everyone seems to have some form of cancer these days. My friend at work just found out her 30 year old daughter has breast cancer. They are all devastated as she's so young and the chemo will leave her sterile, so she'll never had kids. It's very sad.

I wish James a full recovery!

I don't think he's still working for the money. He's always toured nearly constantly. Godfather James is a consummate performer and loves to do it.

I believe he'll pull through this.

Hammer is the decendent of james Brown muthafucker! U seen james Brown in "2 legit too quit".....James handed down his throne to Hammer! James Brown has said that Hammer was most like him and how he admired Hammers positivity and dancing/showmanship! Heck he was even in the cartoon show "hammerman".....

does anyone remember James Brown in the video "to legit too quit"? I honeslty remember James liking Hammer the best out of all the rappers as hammer was different and positive (unlike most others) but still funky and could dance his ass off in shows! I remember an interview with James saying that.....it may seem strange but at least some artists liked his work (like Outkast for example!) I love other rap artists too, but Hammer gets no props which is unfair!)

He'll be fine. If caught early enough it's very treatable.

Man I hope he pulls through, he is one of a kind. I don't think there will ever be another James Brown
