So Marvin Gaye features sex on record after record, and that's perfectly OK, but when Janet does it (with janet. and then TVR), you complain about repetition. Ok then.

first, Janet is no Marvin.

second, when are you going to give up on this one? because it's getting boring too. lol

Obviously Janet is no Marvin.

Honestly, your complaints lead me to believe you aren't a fan. You're unhappy about way too many aspects of her music.

And if it's so boring why do you keep replying? wink

to win, of course razz

and i am (or was) a huge Janet fan. i still consider myself a fan. i just hold her to a high standard that she hasn't lived up to in quite awhile. when Prince was putting out crap music, i was all over his ass. when Madonna was boring me to tears in the mid-90's, i gave her a lot of shit too. why would Janet get a pass?

I'm not saying she should. But when you say that The Velvet Rope is a photocopy of janet., I have to wonder, that's all. I just have one question: where are the complements on janet. of:

-You
-What About
-Got 'Til It's Gone
-Velvet Rope
-My Need
-I Get Lonely (a straight up R&B jam)
-Rope Burn (and it's not TTWLG)

How is this repetition?

The only pure pop song on TVR is Together Again. janet. is chock full of them.

-What About

If + This Time
-Got 'Til It's Gone

That's The Way Love Goes + Where Are You Now
-My Need

Because Of Love + You Want This
-I Get Lonely (a straight up R&B jam)

every r&b song of 1997/1998
-Rope Burn (and it's not TTWLG)

Any Time, Any Place + The Body That Loves You + 70's Love Groove + a lot more skank.

How is this repetition?

The only pure pop song on TVR is Together Again. janet. is chock full of them.[/quote]

what's wrong with pure pop? you are a Kylie fan, a Janet fan, and a Madonna fan, arnen't you? and Everytime is straight up pop. Special as well. and Go Deep.

and it's not necessarily a song-for song re-make of the "janet." album. but the subject matter is similar. it's the "janet." album redone with a stronger edge and more substance, but it's still her repeating herself, even if she is improving on the formula. and the production is 1993 era janet, updated for 1997.

but perhaps i'm with these last 2 albums, i've just come to realize that she's just like every other pop singer. when i loved her, her albums were very different from each other. there was the young woman becoming independent with Control. there was the social conscious vibe of RN. there was the sexual liberation of Janet. and even TRV offered a new theme of depression and more kinkiness, even though it was presented in the sensibility and language of the previous album. the last 2 are just extremely disappointing. as if she only ever had 3 thoughts in her head, and she used them all up. and is only intersted in one of them now.

Oh, I have no problem with pure pop. It seems like you do, though.

Your choices seem quite desperate to me. My Need = Because Of Love + You Want This? So two pure pop songs adds up to an R&B jam. Hmmmmm.... Anyway, you're entitled to your opinion. I think she'd do a heavy metal album and you'd still add up her songs in odd ways and say she copied her old production values. But that's just me.

I'm glad you finally admitted that you once did love Janet's music, but don't anymore. That explains everything. From some of your posts in the past I thought you were a die-hard.

a heavy metal album would merely be her repeating Black Cat, If, What About, Trust A Try and Just A Little While. lol

and i do love Janet's music. i can even occasionally enjoy All For You. and sit through DamitaJo without my skin crawling. but that's exactly the problem. there's nothing to love anymore. every piece of news about the album, up until it was announced that it was a sex album had me excited for it, and Just A Little While gave me great hope that she was going to take on the same themes with a fresher sound (for her). but that track is an anachronism, and it's unfortunate that she decided to just play it safe (creatively) again. ho hum. i want to LOVE janet's music again. merely tolerating it just won't do.

so until then, i'll go stroke and carress the sweaty towel she threw at me as she started singing Let's Wait Awhile in 1994. cloud9

Well, I'll stroke my sweaty T-shirt that Madonna threw at me in July "Kabbalists Do It Better"

I would say that, yes "janet" and "The Velvet Rope" have a lot in common, but the math is really funny that was done. I seriously don't hear "You Wanat This" or "Becuase of Love" in "My Need". If anyting, "Becuase of Love" is connected with "Together Again" (but I'm not giving anyone hints).

You all must be comparing the R&B chord progressions used in these songs,
because their production techniques sound nothing alike.

no no no!

I'm not sure if we are getting all that deep with it. Themes and types of songs tend to match in Janet songs sometimes. For example, the "rock" songs "You" and "Trust A Try" have a little in common, I would say. I hear connections between "janet" and "The Velvet Rope" and even some between "The Velvet Rope" and "All For You", but none between "janet" and "Damia Jo".

as i said before, a copy of a copy of a copy bears little resemblance to the quality of the original. if the janet. album were recorded in 2004 (without the songs about things besides love/sex), it would sound like DamitaJo. it's just Jam & Lewis (barely) updating her sound every 3 years.

And as everyone else seems to agree, you're hearing what you want to hear, not what's actually there.
