00. Ryan Adams - Love Is Hell*

01. Nick Cave - Abatoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus

02. Ben Harper & Blind Boys Of Alabama - There Will be a Light

03. Björk - Medulla

* the reason "Love Is Hell" is included as "00" is because,
although it is arguably the best album of this year, it was
originally released as two EP's at the very end of 2003.

However, it is good enough to qualify as the best album of
both 2003 ánd 2004. Fucking brilliant in fact!

Other than that, I can't think of any original albums I was thrilled with this year. I bought a lot older stuff I really liked. There were some pretty good hits sets this year (and still more coming out, like one from Neil Young that is pretty good for a single disc).

headache

Lots of great new releases this year.

my top three at this point in time are

1) Rejoicing In The Hands & Nino Rojo - Devendra Banhart (I know they are two seperate releases but the tracks were recorded at the same sessions and definitely do feel like a double album)

2) Van Lear Rose - Loretta Lynn (after all this time it has definitely lived up to the hype...i absolutely love 'Have Mercy')

3) The Milk-Eyed Mender - Joanna Newsom (definitely an album to polarise listeners - it's the kind of album you'll either love or hate...but she wins me over with her lyrics and harp playing)

Honourable Mentions : Beautifully Human - Jill Scott; Medulla - Bjork; The Blueberry Boat - The Fiery Furnaces; Showtime - Dizzee Rascal

If I can replace The Killers with Eminem's new album, I will. What another classic album. Sampling Heart and Martika? He's a lyrical genius. Who else could rhyme Putt Putt with Butt Butt and make it work in a song?
