By the strictest definitions, no KISS and the Beatles weren't boybands -but by a broader definition they do qualify. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I'm gonna have to go with Fam on this one. ![]() But I also like the Jackson 5 too. And for the record, Duran Duran and INXS are NOT boy bands. If that's the case, then you may as well say that Prince is a teen idol too. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Like some of the other orgers, I grew up in the 70's and was in my teens in the 80's. So,you can call it what you like, but I grew up with Duran Duran, Inxs,MJ, and Prince as a teen idols. Therefore, in my book, I would consider DD and Inxs a boy bands. [Edited 11/9/04 0:25am]

Haven't you learn anything from listening to P's music over the years and that is too never to assume about people. If you assume too much, than you make an ass out yourself. Sure, I don't exclusively listen to Popmusic but you can't assume that I am totally foreign to Pop/New Wave Artist. While growing up in a musical family, there is no way that I could possiblily listen to one form b/c my parents wanted me to have different exposure to different music forms. Furthermore, I grew up in 70's and 80's with the MTV generation so what you've said thus far is common knowledge. There is really no sense in making an issue about it to tell you the truth b/c good music is music. I say fuck music genre labels altogether. [Edited 11/9/04 10:03am]

And I have a musical background as well. My point is that when you think of bands like INXS and Duran, you can't put them in the same category as groups like NKOTB and New Edition. Here are my favorites
The Jacksons-but I really don't consider them a boyband or Toni Tone Toni-they played their own instruments New Edition (top of the list) the "Please don't go girl" song was basically a remake of "Is this the end" NE (NE Heartbreak album was a good album, fav track was Boys to Men. Any they're still in the game! Jodeci-definitely held it down in the 90s(Forever My Lady, Cry for You, Feenin, Come and talk to me, the list goes on....

If that's the case, then you may as well say that Prince is a teen idol too. But if you dont consider DD a boyband because they could write and play their music live, why consider Jackson 5 a boyband? They were always playing instruments and when they left Motown they wrote their songs as well. So what I have to ask is everyone what is a "boyband" ?

i would say , boys to men or the jacksons

Of course The Jackson 5 are THE ultimate boy band, but I'm surprised no one mentioned the best boyband of today, Hanson. Sure they aren't a boy band in the true sense of the word, but they always get lumped in with the rest.
Speaking of which isn't it telling how the latest teen pop boom started out promisingly (Hanson and The Spice Girls) yet devolved into mediocre crap (all the rest)? [Edited 11/9/04 16:25pm]

They weren't manufactured, (being brothers and all) write their own music, and play their own instruments. Same deal with The Moffatts. You're gonna need better terms on how you define a boyband. Writing their own music, playing instruments, and forming on their own doesn't automatically mean a group isn't a boyband. And being manufactured and not writing their own music doesn't automatically mean group is. ![]() The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced how you define a boyband all depends on the merchadising. If it turns out I'm right, and the qualifying factor for being a boyband is the merchadising, then yes, Hanson is a boyband. I'vee seen Hanson bedsheets. ![]() "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
