WKRP's Radio Format

Any "WKRP in Cincinnati" fans out there? If you really think about it, there was no real format that WKRP went by.

Johnny Fever was always playing oldies rock and roll like Chuck Berry but sometimes you would see him play something current at the time like The Police.

Venus Flyetrap, my favorite, would sometimes play jazz and other times he would play stuff like A Taste of Honey, Ashford and Simpson, Kool and the Gang, Carl Carlton, The Pointer Sisters, and Aurra. Venus was also a cool MF with the fur coats, silk pants, and big brim hats.

And the posters in the background also ranged from hard rock, new wave, and funk. When you really think about it, WKRP must have played just about every damned thing. lol
Andy is a four letter word.

I recall Venus Flytrap having a fondness for EW&F and playing "Westchester Lady" by Bob James... but then there's like a Juice Newton poster in their hallway. confuse

I miss WKRP-try to catch it in reruns every chance I can.

Corporate radio could learn a lot from the eclectic mix-it's all what you love, not what you're told to sell.

I can't remember what Big Guy Mr. Carlson's stance was on the format?

I'm thinking Lawrence Welk, but I could be wrong.

Based on the this episode guide, I mainly recall the first two seasons (1978-1980), but my family watched it circa 1984. Then it was in syndication in the mid `90s, right when I got home from school. Remember the 90s version of WKRP (new cast)?

edit: just wanted to add, I must have seen all of the seasons in syndication, because I sure remember this episode:

"Venus and the Man"

The station's cleaning woman asks Venus to convince her big, tough teenage son not to drop out of school.

b: 31 Jan 81

NOTE: This episode contains the famous scene where Venus explains the structure of the atom in two minutes.

Never got into that one-always has be to be the original.

It was never the best show in the world, but you don't mess with what worked.

That and I always wanted a fro like Venus.

"Pilot (2)"

Mr. Carlson won't give Andy any money to advertise WKRP's format change. While Andy tries to come up with a publicity stunt to get the station in the news, a group of irate former listeners demands a return to the old format and an on-air apology to Lawrence Welk.

lol

I think they were supposed to be Pop. Johnny was supposed to play rock hits, but he never would. Venus was late night, so he played mellow R&B. Okay I can't think of any stations like that.

I remember seeing a large Prince picture in the background once, circa "Prince" with the long straight hair.

THIS is 1 of the funniest tv shows ever!

WHEN are they going to put all the episodes on DVD?

GOOD OBSERVATION about the "format" of 'KRP;
they played a little of everything,
though it seemed kind of "predictable" that
Johnny Fever (caucasian) played "rock" during the day
while
Venus (a fly, smooth-talkin' brotha) played "R&B" at night..
hm..

I rememeber the "real families" episode where that tv show "Real Families" profiled Herb Tarlek's family..
when the Real Families camera crew went to work with Herb,
there were not 1 but TWO
STEELY DAN songs that played in the background :

"Deacon Blues"
&
"Peg" when the camera 1st enters the studio, zooms in on the voluptuous Jennifer Marlowe, & then has a hard time zooming out..!

me - I always preferred Bailey.
& not just because she had darker hair..
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Those are my favorites as well. That's the best version of "Angel Of The Morning" if you ask me.
