Favorite Bobby Womack songs 
The man doesn't get a lot of mention in here, but I'm sure there must be some more fans out there. Never crossing over to a broader Pop audience however he is an original old school Soulman, a Soul Survivor if ever there was one, starting his career in the 50ees and still doing music today. His amazingly rich and soulful body of work makes him one of my all time favorite artists (one of just a handful of people who is represented in my record collection with over 30 itmes.) And what's more, though this was quite some time ago, he's also responsible for one of the best concerts (maybe even THE best concert...) I have ever witnessed. Here's a list of some fave tracks (sorry, I was not able to trim it shorter than this, not with Bobby! ...and I'm sure I still miss a lot)

Harry Hippie If you think you're lonely now wish he didnt trust me so much Daylight thats the way i feel about cha as a hell of a musician and songwriter Bobby is, he was a shady bastid too when sam cooke was shot he married sam's widow... when his brother's found him and whooped his ass, they divorced,then on another occasion members of the spinners gave Bobby some money to help Jackie wilson whilst he was in the hospital, and Bobby Pocketed the cash. | |

they collaborated several times, on one of Wilton Felders solo albums you will find "No matter how high I get (I'll still be looking up to you)" with Altrinna Grayson as Bobbys duet partner, and earth shattering tour-de-force power ballad, just outstanding! That's probably b/c it's the only song you know by this mountain of soul! hahah! Seriously though, taht was the song that first got me into him. He was the musical guest on New York Undercover about 10 years or so ago. YOu could hear him singing this at that club Detective Tores always went to (his father's club). I knew then I had to look into who this guy was. I bought 'The Poet' and was blown blown blown away. WOWOWOWOWOW! That song 'if you think you're lonely now' has got to be one of the most powerfully sung songs I've ever heard. The rest of the album is phenomenal. That guy was on top of his game! IT's hilarious when he sings, "just like my mama's fried chicken... it's good enough to be finger lickin"!!!! he even sings a line like that with great conviction. I love it and I love this album particularly. Add these to the list of great tracks: where do we go from here secrets just my imaginiation He had that countryish feel to so many of his songs that I love so much. He's always been so rough, so uncomprimising... you remember an album he wanted to entitle "move over Charly Pride ... Give another N**** a try"...hilarious! Bobby Womack is one of my alltime fave artists. He has been mentioned on here by myself and Paligap, that I know for sure. One of my alltime fave songs in the world by anyone is "Harry Hippie". Bobby is a great guitarist and great vocalist. "Across 110th st" "A Woman's got to have it" "If You think you're lonley now" etc. His shit is just great, period. All of it. You can go on for a year. The Poet II is my favorite Bobby album. But maybe that's just for personal reasons, cause it was the one that got me hooked! I had it on constant powerplay for weeks and months back in 1984 or so. At a time when most black artists wanted to follow the MJ craze and cross over to a Pop & Rock audience he released this fundemental soul manifest. The arrangements are more up-to-date (80s wise) than on the Poet I, more keyboards/synths, even some danceable but nevertheless always soulful tracks. His vocals are great, and there are three fantastic duets with Patti Labelle, their voices just fit perfectly. More people say Poet I is the better album and it was almost impossible to top this with the follow up. Anyway, my advice is to get The Poet II tomorrow, NOT compare it to The Poet I to start with and give it some time. I think you won't be dissapointed. One of those cats that you'd think would be bigger than he is.
Great writer, singer, guitar player. One of those soul "squallers" in the Wilson Pickett tradition. When I wrote that the Stones had covered It's All Over Now in '64 reminded me off how long this guy has been around. My favs: Lookin' for a Love (You can't help but get the "spirit" off this tune) That's the Way I Feel About 'Cha Woman's Gotta Have It Harry Hippie Close To You (for the monologue alone) Give It Back Communication Woman's Gotta Have It I Can Understand It Across 110th St Stop On By I'm In Love Did you know that (the still luscious) Pam Grier sang background for Bobby Womack?
