who'z better? PRince or Eric Clapton?

I know this may seem liek a stupid question because prince and eric clapton play different styles of guitar... but just for fun... who do u think is better? overall, rock, blues, technique, expressiveness, etc.

Clapton had a good run many, many years ago that established his reputation: Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos.

Since then he's been on autopilot, and as boring as can be.

tough call, i went to see eric on his Blues tour about 5 years ago and was blown away. He plays with so much power. Prince though has the edge due to sheer variety and feel.

I think Prince is better, but Eric's last 2 cd's have been excellent. Just because his music is not played on mainstream radio doesn't make the man boring. He's a guitar virtuoso, just like Prince.

I prefer Prince, but I think you cannot compare Prince with Clapton because they make too different music and Clapton is a blues-guitarist ... and very good on his instrument ....

IMO,

they are both great musicains in there own right, not just guitarist.
Clapton, does not just play the blues. Prince does not only play what he plays.

Prince, is not afraid to venture out and try new things unlike Clapton, whom I think get's stuck in a rut. I have seen Clapton play the solo on "While my guitar gently weeps", and I must say that it is good. Good because, he was the original muscian on it when it was first recorded. But, while it was a good solo, he did nothing to make it new.

Prince on the otherhand, took that solo and made it his own. He took chances. This is what I meant when I said that Clapton sometimes gets stuck in a rut.

True - it's hard to compare since they play different types of music... but, Clapton plays the solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on the "Concert For George" DVD, I think - and Prince does the solo on RRHOF... couldn't we compare those two performances of the same song...?
Did anyone out there see both?

The most groundbreaking funk guitar-player:
Eddie Hazel of Funkadelic.

Maybe he isn't an excellent technical guitar-player, but he's just freakin' funky!!!!!
Listen to the Funkadelic albums "Maggot Brain" and "Standing on the Verge of Getting it on".

in the PRINCE documentary made in the early '90's, CLAPTON himself says that PRINCE is far greater that he.

Eric is a minor. all his tunes revolve round simple unintresting chord movements with the occasional "alright Solos". Prince all his tunes are diffrent and he can vary his vocals and produce songs which are intresting and unique with the Sikest sikest solos ever.

did clapton really say that in the documentary? in what context, and about guitar playing, or just plain musicianship?

granted that clapton is overrated (Guitar God?), u guys r really downplaying him. he isn't old and boring, especially for a guy that has been around as along as he has. mb your forgetting his cream, blind faith, yardbirds days and only remembering his recent era's stuff. he is good. prince is good also. clapton is a bluesmith, prince is funky in rockhard way.

clapton> prince in blues
prince > clapton in funk

but waht about for rock?

given they play very different styles, who is more expressive on the guitar within their respective genres?

o yeah, and i herad clapton only plays with 3 fingers, but i guess thats standard for blues, mb even prince does too.

Eric Clapton IS so boring and predictable and lifeless. He would never get funky like Prince, and I won't even begin to speculate about the inertia of his sex life.

In answer to your q, Prince is obviously the winner.

i was just thinking to myself today that Prince has got to be one of the best rythym guitarists ever! but to keep on the subject at hand, I'd have to say Prince.
