A guy at work wants to make a compilation album of songs about wanking. I'm not sure if he's kidding or not, but we were all racking our brains to think of some (Teenage Kicks, Turning Japanese etc.) and I was shocked to discover I couldn't think of ANY Prince songs.

Being serious, I think that the lyrics to Alphabet St. are quite interesting. I'd always interpreted the song as meaning a return to basics - learning the alphabet again. A reference to his Lovesexy rebirth etc. Using talking rather than doing ('I'm gonna talk so sexy') to make himself appealing.
I thought that Crowning the first girl that he met meant that he was going to make her his queen, treating her with respect rather than shallow, meaningless sex.
I particularly like the way he pauses before saying Tennessee. It's like a joke - you think that he's going to say that he's gonna drive her to something sexual (orgasm?), but instead he says something innocent like Tennessee.
Or maybe I'm interpreting it incorrectly. I'd like to hear other people's views.

I think you guys are really reaching with Alphabet Street, reading so much into the lyrics. I've never thought it was about anything really...just a fun song that doesn't have any deeper, hidden meaning. Maybe it does have some other meaning, but I don't think you are going to "discover" or "decipher" it any way besides asking Prince what it means.

A song like Tamborine seems clearly to be about masturbation. I was in high school when it was released and I didn't even figure it out until someone told me.
