What makes Prince a "musical genius"

You always hear the term "musical genius" Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, Elton John....

Prince has gotten this "label". My question is how?? He writes his own music, plays many instruments and has been around over 25 years. But so have so many others. He is very talented, and has put out some good music and is a fanastic entertainer.

But reality is without "purple rain" what would he of been??

My question to you all: What do you think makes Prince a "musical genius"

For me, he is a genius because of his ability to chage his sound, image, and style with every album. Nothing he has ever put out sounds the same. His writing ability to touch every thing from sex, god, love, etc... Knowing he doesn't sellout to the mainstream like other artists, he is tru to himself, his message, and his fans. He takes chances to do things differnt like no other artists, selling his cd with tickets sales, putting his music on line.

I could go on and on, if ever anyone desrves that title, it would be Prince.

The instrumental version of...

"My Summertime Thang" - beautifully played guitar and keyboard solos that couldn't be played by less than a musical genius.

And almost the whole of the rest of his catalogue. nod

he of course can play every instrument...write all of his own music....sing, dance and keep thousands of people riveted for 3 hours night after night.....but...

the sheer amount of different styles he has produced (for himself and others) is just astounding...there's no one else that has done that...but you may say, "well, Madonna reinvents herself every couple years." the difference would be that...Prince does it because that's where the art has taken him...he isn't a puppet....

also...He is the only very, very, highly succesful pop artist to play by his rules...he has an insane amount of control and integrity when it comes to every little detail...It's beautiful...he's truly an artist...in a realm of music that rarely sees true artists....

Me! Anyone who wrote "Goodbye Yellowbrock Road", "Captain Fantastic", "Tumbleweed", "Blue Moves" should be considered a genius! These albums are up there with the best of Prince or Mr Wonder....but thats just my opinion.

For me it was becuase during the Reagan era, the reprisive artistic culture so popular withe Republican regimes, Prince was still comfortable singing songs about viginas.

What makes prince a musical genius??? Well, for starters is the fact that he does play more than 27 instruments. He is self taught at a such a young age starting with the piano. He is self produced, writer and composer. Like Mozart, I truly believe he will not be appreciated till after his death. This is just the beginning, I think you can piece together the rest as his albums and musical creativity outreach any other in history.

Prince is a musical genius because he can create what others are not able to imagine. From nothing he designs and then delivers melodies that appeal to tens of thousands of us. Much of the music touches our hearts & souls and creates a thread of light and feeling that many can connect to. Prince is a genius because he can manifest the invisible. nod

He was called a "genius" from the very beginning. "Purple Rain" was just his most successfully commercial output. But what amazed Warner Bros. so much is that they witnessed the fact that he was so young, so prolific and a multi-instrumentalist. Unfortunately, "Purple Rain" was the first time American mainstream got a clear glimpse of that genius. Insiders were calling Prince a musical genius from the beginning....
