Rate the album AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY

What do you all really think of the album "Around The World In A Day?" I like it and dislike it at the same time LOL..I like it because its so different from what people was expecting from Prince.....I love "Around The World In A day", "Condition Of The heart", "Beret" and "Pop Life" but other than that, I think that album is a let down..it ranks with Lovesexy as the 2 "not so good" Prince albums of the 80's confused neutral IMO

I love ATWIAD and Loxsexy. As the years pass, I appreciate them more and more. I love the fact that he didn't rest on the success of PR and SOTT. He pushed himself artistically when he could have just played it safe. These two have a very unique sound that make them stand out from all the other 80's stuff. True gems! bow

I love ~Around The World In A Day~!

It's definately different, I love ~Tamborine~ the most (very sexy) and i like ~The Ladder~ the least (too much of a downer). Every song has it's own mood, and that's really great in a world that has become cluttered with so much music from different artists that sounds exactly alike.

I've always liked around the world in a day...didn't exactly blow me away on first listen, it's one of those albums (like Parade) that takes a little while to grow on ya.

The tracklisting has always struck me as being kinda odd though. confused
The songs taken individually are nearly all good/excellent...but there doesn't seem to be a decent flow to the album, IMO. shrug

...it's also worth mentioning that Condition Of The Heart still stands as being one of Prince's best ballads...ever.

I've warmed to it over the years but I still find it erratic and inconsistant. I think it would benefit greatly from the remastered treatment as it sounds quite badly recorded in places. On the plus side, it's retained a kind of quirky charm and, given a chance, is quite a compelling listen but the only real gems on the album (for me, at least) are Condition Of The Heart and Raspberry Beret. A good album if not a great one.

I think the let-down was necessary. It was a big risk at that time, and exhibited that he was going to continue to challenge his audience after such a huge selling album. The outcome artistically is one of the most uneven albums in his catalogs, but that's a risk you take when you refuse to release a PR pt. II, and try to go beyond your comfort zone.

I too appreciate this album for being such a bizarre move after Purple Rain. Based just on it's own merits, though, I'd lump into the middle of my Prince list. It's not his best but it's far from his worst.

The flow of the album is a bit odd for me. I am not a fan of either the Ladder or Temptation. Well, Temptation is fun, but I think it's far from his strongest 80s output.

Still, ATWIAD has its moments. I'm currently sick of Raspberry Beret, but it is a classic. Condition, Pop Life, Tamborine are all top notch tracks. Also, the title track is just so damn odd that I have to appreciate it.

As much of a let down I think that ATWIAD is...Prince wouldnt be Prince had he not released ATWIAD. Prince has never been the type of artist that rest on his laurels and was predictable so I think he wouldnt be Prince having not released ATWAID right after PR.....I just think he shoulda developed the themes on the album a little better..for instance..I like the Middle eatern sound of the song "Around The World In A Day" as well as the Beatle-esque sound of Raspberry Beret..I think he shoulda expounded on that instead of putting the throways "Tamborine", "America" and "The Ladder" on the record...Plus, I think he coulda did much more with "Temptation" ...and what was up with that convo with God mad neutral

isn't a track on here i don't love. magical stuff.

though i agree with cloudbuster, the sound quality is poor in places, and there's a big need for remastering.

It would have been nice if he would have made America and Tamborine a little longer. They are the two funkiest songs on the album. IMO

I definitely understand what you're saying. Which is why I said it's one of his most uneven albums. Although I dig "Tamborine" it doesn't really fit within the context of the album, but it's not the only song on there that doesn't.

...and what was up with that convo with God mad neutral

Well...it wouldn't be a Prince album without the idiosyncrasies. biggrin

Tamborine, a throwaway? It's a perfect 80's Prince song, joyously simple and fun.

I really loved around the world in a day right when it came out. I was really into PR and when ATWIAD came out I was 13 and blown away by it too, I love Paisley Park, Condition, The Ladder, Pop life, rhaspberry...so many great songs. To be honest, tamborine and Temptation are my 2 least faves, although i really like those too.

Embarrassingly enough, I never owned this CD until recently... but of course I was familiar with all the songs individually. Musically, it's really ambitious and so different from Purple Rain...I love this album, it's now a favorite.

this album came during a period where I felt that Prince had few if any mis-steps. From 1999-SOTT, every album was a new musical journey and ATWIAD is an amazing jump. He was hitting on all cylinders and even most of the B-sides (with the possible exception of GIRL) rank as good or better than most of the stuff that was on the market at the time. In fact, ATWIAD is easily better than any Prince album since D+P. Since then, he's had a few good songs on each album, but seriously, it is practically impossible to claim that he has had a complete collection on a disc that opens the ears, heart and mind as well as ATWIAD.

His influences were obvious, but he wasn't repeating himself like he has been known to do. Can anyone name 5 other albums that he came out with IN A ROW that had the influence and sparkle of 1999, PR, ATWIAD, Parade and SOTT? Each one of them is an important part of the steps that showed his amazing growth. Each builds on the last one without losing the listener. Each shows a new maturity and expands on his sound.

ATWIAD is a classic. And thats all that needs to be said about dat! lol

Temptation was exciting way back when, and there's a line from America that I still say

When I first heard the album in 1985 I didn't like it much, except for "Pop Life" and "Beret", but over time I feel in love with "Temptation" (damn that's one funky song), "America" (loved the long version video), and particularly, "Condition of the Heart" (I translated this one into French and it's still beautiful).

So, on a scale from 1 - 10 I have to give it a 8.5. It was really a good album.

I think he did a good job and I also belive that if he'd released "Purple Rain II", that his career wouldn't be a remarkable as it has been. That's what made him a good artist, although he didn't do the expected, he did the unexpected very damn good.

I don't know, ATWIAD is in that unlocky spot of having to follow up an album as amazing and groundbreaking as Purple Rain.

It's really good, but it seems a little szichophrenic and unfocused compared to his truly great albums.
