Who Thinks NEWS, Xpectation and C-Note are better than Musicology? I do.
I thought Musicology was great when it first came out but it just doesn't have the long-standing class or the staying power to be up there with his better or best work. NEWS, Xpectation and C-Note feature great keyboard and guitar playing from Prince and show his versatility on his instruments. Musicology for the most part doesn't and relies on formulaic songwriting, except for If I Was The Man In Ur Life. Now where is the formula on NEWS, Xpectation and C-Note? No where to be found - this is great, underrated music, perfect for putting on in the background, chilling out to or appreciating up close with headphones. He also has a great BAND on these two records, the same band which sounded awesome on tour and Musicology only features the band on 4 of the tracks, most of which are fairly lacklustre anyway. Who else thinks NEWS, Xpectation and C-Note will stand the test of time as pieces of art and skillful musicianship more than Musicology? . i think N.E.W.S is great, maybe the best of the instrumental bunch. i don't think it outshines musicology though. in fact, the band really shines on musicology. it's a terrific batch of songs, excellent throughout. they are two different approaches, both solid winners, IMO. I think all 3 albums are more adventurous than Musicology. But since Musicology was intended to be a "pop" album, it's hard to say.

I haven't listened to Musicology in over a month. But I have listened to NEWS in between that time, and have given it many more spins than Musicology overall. NEWS definitely sticks to my ribs more, and soon I'll need to give Musicology more of a chance just to be fair.
Although I've never heard Xpectation or C-Note, all of these including NEWS being instrumental albums doesn't make it an apples/apples comparison - but nevertheless one sticks to my ribs and with the other I'm hungry 2 hours later. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Peace i realise they are entirely different works but i am comparing them as they are his most recent (good) releases. i don't count chocolate invasion or slaughterhouse as real albums. so i think in comparing his recent work, that musicology does not stand up on its own as approaching genius, except for in about 3 songs (ICP&C, Million Days, IIWTMIUL).
