million days - nice descending run and sounds like he picked every note, but it's spoilt
by the mushy mix of the song (i dont think its very hard. the beginning to love
2 the 9s is harder i think)
computer blue - nice melodic phrases, and flows well to the main riff again (with a great wah
wah effect with flanger feedback)
cinnamon girl - i like the fast run, with its swirling beginning that ends on a short root note.
not great though overall
3 chains of gold - cant remember at the moment.

how hard they are depends on whos playing them. the hardest thing is mimicing the feel, not the scales and picking for me.

U guys should check out this man, www.vai.com (steve vai)

Has lots of soul in his playing, even when he plays fast he has lots of dedication to keeping it melodic and powerful.

And he has the most interesting hand movement when playing, lots of flow.

Vai is such a huge Prince fan too!!!, he attended the L.A. show, and has jammed i belive with the NPG. He gave one of his sentimental guitars to prince.

I also believe Prince is a big fan of Vai as well. I hope they do something together.

I like Steve Vai very much, but man, this is a thread for guitar players I don't believe any guitar player in 2004 never heard of him. ehhe

Prince's playing can seem simple compared to someone like Steve Vai, but he does many trick things.

Peach is another example of a weird solo

Also, this is probably more production than guitar playing, but I love the bitty solo on The Future.

Steve Vai is an awesome guitar player. He's one of several musicians, Prince included of course, that influenced me to play.

What age did everyone learn to play? 13 here.

I agree that computer blue is hard, it seems easy to hum along with, but playing it is a bit of a challenge. (Does anyone have accurate tabs?)

Seems strange that when I first heard the ending solo in lets go crazy I thought that was complex, but I seemed to get going quickly.

I don't find Computer Blue to be amazingly complex, but its definitely tough (impossible?) keeping it fluid sounding during the repeated ascending runs segment.

i don't think computer blue is difficult at all, prince there are lots of more difficult solos. compuetr blue is only hard at first, then it flows well. The solos of TRC liek title track and familly name are more difficult than this.

From this solos 3 chains o gold is the more difficult to duplicate. And i think cinnamon girl more difficult (the run) then the descending scale of million days.

It's relative, some people has strenghts in some areas of the guitar while other don't, i used to play a solo form a speed metal band called angra that has the same like of Prince's a million days, so it's not difficult for me because i praticed it too much. And i never played nothing like that crazy ass 3 chains solo, so i don't have any idea how to play that.

In my opionion, there are better solos by P. But it's just a matter of taste. Prince has been a big influence on my guitar playing along with many others. If u know who P digs as guitar players then it's very easy 2 hear that in his playing.

Computer Blue is my favorite of Princes solos, because it's very melodic (fixed in the studio, but still a very good solo - good tone).

Three Chains of Gold, I"m 100% positive is not Prince. It's Levi. Definitely a semi-hollow body guitar, Levi's axe of choice. Plus, it's a much more intricate playing than Prince ever plays. He's more of a "pick it up and wing it" sort of guy.

When Prince is on, he's very good. But, alot of time's Prince sounds like doesn't put much thought into his solos. Which is fine. I think his #1 priority is getting a good energetic take from the band. A solo is secondary. Miles Davis was the same way. On Miles's outakes, he's got much better solos than what turned up on the official releases. But he chose the takes that the band really cooked on, not the ones that showcased him. I think Prince is the same way, for the most part. Musicology has some great rhythm playing on it, not really alot of good soloing. Which is fine. The longer I play guitar (going on 15 years now) the more I'm concerned with sounding good within a band, not standing out from the band.

His live soloing can be a bit meandering and even sloppy at times, and "winging it" in a live setting well.....that's not always a bad thing. The recorded versions for the most part are concise and very much to the point. Which suggest to me that a bit of forthought went into playing the solo in the studio.


The solo in "Three Chains of Gold" sounds like Prince's
playing in my opinion, I don't hear anything in the playing that's out of the ordinary.
Could you point out exactly what you mean by "intricate"? I'm a guitarist too, I just didn't hear anything that screamed someone else might be playing the solo.
