1999

Recently going to a Prince concert, I wasn't sure what to expect. During his Purple Rain concert some 20+ years ago, I had front row, center seats. I wore the purple teddy with garters, stockings, heels, boa, and the whole bit. Danced by bootie off and enjoyed every nasty, titalating moment. I was even invited backstage...but my bully boyfriend (at the time) wouldn't allow it.

Today though, I could actually and redially see that this new Prince concert was all about musicianship....not sex, dance, or romance. He truely is still an incredible musician. This was the focus...this was the theme, this was the show. The crowd was as energetic and appreciative as ever. Any hint of one of his classics sent the crowd into a frenzy. We all still love Prince.

However, his obvious absence of the song 1999 really made me think. That song is all about the coming of Christ and the destruction of this system as we know it. It's about everyone knowing that this is happening, but not caring, and even taking their last moment of life and time to party, party, party. Knowing that Prince is now a Jehovah's Witness, I started to see why this song was left out of his program. Jehoveh's Witnesses take this Bible proficied event very seriously, and his song, 1999, would truly be sending out the wrong message as respects this event.

Although I love this song and missed hearing it very much, I applaud Prince for recognizing and appreciating that he must hold true to his new found values. Actually, when you think about it, if the sky really were to turn purple, and people were running everywhere, knowing that their destruction was coming....I'm sure that EVERYBODY would care.

He said in 1999 that he would perform it for the last time, and that after that, there would be "no need". I was surprised that he uses an instrumental line from it during the Purple Rain medley.
let me come over it's a beautiful day to play with you in the dark

He's not performing it because that year has passed.

Just kidding... this is the first and only song he said he would never perform again, after Dec. 31, 1999 and what do ya know? He's holding true to his word on this one.
