Why hasn't Prince sang 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' lately?

I miss it.

Last heard him sing it myself on the JOTY tour in '98. Has he sang it yet on the Musicology tour?

just wondering.

I hope it's not a JW-restricted song. That'd be shit! confused

I saw him in Pittsburgh in April and he did not sing that song. Doesn't seem like it should be JW-restricted. I agree, I love that song to. However, he did sing a song about telemarketers, bill collectors and crazy fans. That was great!!!

Then he said, "Er, I mean, to make him mad."

I swear!

What is this, 1987 all over again? rolleyes

It's probably just a case of another classic song lost in the shuffle. The guy's got too many great songs to keep track of.

Its not lost. It sounded great when he performed it live! But from what I hear the setlist changes up a little to give the band a break.

It's probably another song that Larry Graham told him to cut. It could make him look like one of those "evil" homosexuals. Next he will be telling him to cut his straight hair and let it grow out natural.

Ditto. He performed it on the ONA tour, he was quite devout then and he didn't seem to have a problem with the content. It's probably just one of the many prince classics that isn't in the current setlist.

Naw...I think it's because he's restricted now.

I would love to hear just the music to "Erotic City", I mean, he can change the words.

I wonder what it would sound like with changed words.

Hmmm...maybe he'll call it "Zion City" instead of "Erotic City"....

Lyrics to Zion City below (1st verse only)

Zion City (formerly known as "Erotic City")

"All of my christian life.
I've been looking for some peace.
That would want to end my strife.
Maybe it's not just a dream.

If you want to make some time, maybe we could knock on doors.
That would be so truly neat Zion City come alive."

Yeah...I can hear it now... nodheadbang

this is pretty good. I wish they would just let the band jam on the music while Prince changes outfits. He still changes outfits during the show, right?

If I Was Your Girlfriend was performed on the Hit N Run tour in 99/00. It was awesome.

I still would love to hear the song the way he performed it during the SOTT days.

Don't think JW has lots to do with it...tho it does cuz who he is now...which has to do with...

That song is about Prince being insecure (and this is after all the songs about being just a sexual being but no commitment) cuz he thinks his woman's holding back...most likely cuz he's holding back. Now he's made a commitment sorta, and doesn't know how to ask for full confidentiality in him. Asking in a non-direct, cute way, "If I was your girlfriend would u tell me all the things u forgot when I was your man?" 1) Women forgetting? 2) If u have to ask, u already kno.

Regardless, the progression of albums/songs shows him growing...I was iimpressed by that song by him. And have been impressed as he grows. "What U Want Me to Do" kills me...cuz it's Prince as I'd imagined he'd be when I was a teenager.

Lastly, no, it's not relevant. During the L.A. opener he did On the Couch and some people were grumbling about him talking about going down South. My take: it's his WIFE! When did you ever think you'd hear a Prince song talking about being put out on the couch. Prince begging like Marvin or Al? To me? Just more progression. And we are blessed.

Enjoy If I Was Your Girlfriend (cuz that was one of the only songs from SOTT that I heard in my neighborhood...gangstaz was sittin on Daytons bumpin it...sounded real good from a block away!)...and realize that's one of those songs. But maybe one day he'll do it! I never thought I'd hear Let's Work or She's Always in My Hair or Question of U or Controversy. He's got so much to choose from.

So this song is definitely not relevant anymore. A mA married man doesn't have to sing about if I was your girlfriend...or should, because he's asking her to open up to him and tell him thing
