Not sure quite what to call this one, but I'm sure everyone knows which album I'm referring to - The one after D&P, but before Come, with the New Power Generation. I overlooked it for a long time, and I'm tempted to pick it up. At the moment, it's a toss up between this album and Grafitti Bridge for my next purchase.

Anyway, what's the general concensus on this album? I'm very curious, as I've everything from "It's brilliant!" to "It's his worst work ever."

So, what's your opinion on the "Symbol" album?

Hope this thread has cleared that up for ya! wink

Basically it's one of those. Not the best not the worst. Classic? Sure. It's defining for the time period..as it's the one that has the name of who he was about to become.

I think one of the reasons it's a hat/love affair is that it runs the gamut. You got the rap(which no one likes), the ballads, the rock songs, the rave/techno songs, and 7.

It is better than D&P. And better than some stuff that came out after (though I love COme more)..until you get to TGE, which is heralded as a true classic and essential (I feel differently). It is a diamond in the rough.

It's got the segues..and no one likes those. It also has My name is Prince and 3 Chains O'Gold which are hate/love affairs round here (funny how they both almost bookend the disk...which may explain the love/hate for this album...for most, it neither starts nor finishes well. Which is essential for P fans...at least it has to start off with a good bang. Song number one cannot be a skipper.

It was my first Prince album, and brings back great memories from my childhood.

A solid album - MAYBE a bit too long, cut out a couple of the fillers and it would have been a tighter set of tracks (Sweet Baby, The Flow, Arrogance could all go - not that they're particularly awful, but they're at the bottom end of the list).

It is a good thing that they cut all those narsty segues out though - the ones they left in make no sense, but at least we are spared Mayte's terrible "acting".

I love Sweet Baby razz
"Stand tall sweet baby don't you fall fall f-f-fall fall fall!" The multi layering of the vocals is great.

Ditch Continental and Carmen all together!

Well, Mrdespues, You did say that all of the songs on C&D, are "GREAT to GOOD" except one. So I was under the impresion that you were a BIG C&D fam.

well, LAProducer, condescending as you are, That just so happens to be because, unlike a lot of orgers, I find a lot of, if not most, of Prince's output to be Great to Good.

Co-sign. I'm the same way.

I'd rate prince the same way too, 3.5/5.

It's not brilliant.

It's better than Graffiti Bridge.

It contains some great songs.

And some filler.

There are people who hail it as a masterpiece.

But they are wrong.

It is a ***1/2 (out of 5) album.

For what it's worth, my friend, a "hardcore casual fan," meaning he wouldn't own anything post symbol-album except for what I've burned him, thinks Musicology is the best since that album. I really liked it at first, think it's devalued most of all P's albums, granted, that's down from an A- to a B+. But, yeah, Musicology's better, coming in a at solid A-, which I'm fairly certain won't slip.

It's a pretty crap album overall, although it does have some highlights such as Love2the9's, My Name Is Prince, Sexy MF, 7, The Morning Papers, 3 chain's O gold & and god created woman. The other tracks are fairly average and some really downers like Arrogance. It is better than Graffiti Bridge Although Graffiti Bridge does have some mad tracks on it like NPG, elephants & flowers, The Question of U, Thieves in the temple, But has some really really crappy tunes like Graffiti Bridge & the movie isn't any better ethier although the album is better.

Personally I would choose the "symbol" album.

The Symbol album is a CLASSIC, with tracks like 'The Morning Papers' & 'Continental' you cannot go wrong & as for Chaos & Disorder, that is a hidden gem of a CD, half an hour of filthy music(in a good way y'all)

WOW! sarcasm, I have never come across this from a fellow orger, a first folks!

But seriously, forgetting New Master which is just a CD single, comparing NPS to Symbol is like comparing chalk with cheese!

Symbol does have some classic cuts & would have done SO much better if not for the poor choice of lead single, Sexy MF(not because it is a BAD song). 7 is a beautiful track, The Morning Papers - classic Prince, the way tracks 8 through 13 work into each other is the best, 3 Chains O' Gold is a Great song if you are in the right mood for it too, it IS a CLASSIC album overall!

If I remember correctly, "Diamonds and Pearls" $old some 6 million copies, while "SYMBOL" only 2 million, so 4 million people disagree with me, but I think "SYMBOL" is superior 2 "D&P".

If I could own just 3 PRINCE albums that he released in the 90s, they would b SYMBOL, GOLD and CHAOS, but that's just me.

With it's blend of funk, rock, rap, reggae, techno/rave, blues and jazz, "SYMBOL" is by far his most complete album, YES! even more so that "SIGN" and "PURPLE RAIN", which r better albums, but don't have the variety that "SYMBOL" has.

Go buy it!

The abulm is fierce.
Many many brilliant and terrific songs on it.
It has a few filler songs that slow it down, but many times more good stuff.
I never understood why it doens't rank among his best albums.

I mean think about it:
2 the 9's, The Max, The Morning Papers, Blue Light, Melt with U, Damn U, 7 , God Created Woman. How many times has Prince actually had that many good songs on one album since?

prince's hip hop influences kind of ruin it, but the album does have something Musicology doesn't-***** classic Prince songs.

There's nothing on Musicology as amazing as 7 or Damn U imo.

So the album's worth listening to at least. Good, not great.

I have to agree the "Symbol" Album to me is a masterpiece within itself. I think each song even "My name is Prince" has something unique to bring to the table. It's styles he has never tried or done before.

Sexy MF(Breakdown towards the end is the bomb)!
Love2the9's
The Morning Papers
heck even the Sacrifice of Victor even had a lil ring to it.

Of course it wasn't his best, but I would have to say like most of his albums it is unique and unlike any other with sum crunk beats. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

^But if you're giving it a perfect score, that'd mean you even like Tony M's rapping on it. nuts
