I don't recall when I first saw Prince, but I do recall the first time I saw him in concert. I was in the 5th grade, so it had to be 1980....ooohhh weeee....when I saw him in that trench coat, thigh highs, high-heeled boots and twirling around with that guitar...it was like love at first sight... ....it was all she wrote after that...I was addicted...like a crackhead's first hit of crack ..I secretly wanted to have his baby.... I didn't think he was so cute, I'm not sure what I thought...but I saw something in him, I think his sexual appeal but couldn't quite understand because I was about 7 years old during PR and it was on the album cover that I first saw how Prince looked. My sister had the album and used to play his songs and I remember pulling out and reading some of the lyrics and wondered about how 'different' his lyrics were compared to other artists I knew about, and although I didn't keep up too much afterwards, I always kept that in mind, which is the reason why for my music class I did a presentation on Prince because I also saw how really talented he was in a lot of ways compared to other artists & I guess I saw that from before. At that time the 'Emancipation' album was coming out.
When I show my nieces and nephews today, some of Prince's videos like, 'I wanna be your lover' they ask me, is that a girl??? Is that a boy???? I tell them he's a man and they continue to ask why he looks like a girl, but I don't recall myself thinking that at all, looking back. The very first time I saw Prince I didn't even know who he was. I was about 15 and at a BX at Hahn Air Force Base in "West" Germany.
I picked up the album "Prince" My dad looked over my shoulder and said "Don't even think about it". Later that year, I started hearing "1999" "LRC" and "Delirious" on the base's bowling alley juke box. I almost wore out my sister's copy of the tape when I got back to the states that summer. I've been hooked ever since. I'm firmly planted in denial

Yep, something like that with me too: Watching the "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" videos and seeing something very powerful about him, in addition to really digging the music. I heard these songs on the radio before I saw the videos, and also heard "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Controversy" -- but it was seeing him that got me interested in knowing more. Just something about his look and "presence."

The year was 1981 or 1982 and I was like 11 years old and I saw Prince on a TV show called Solid Gold doing Little Red Corvette or 1999 or both . Can't quite remember. I was absolutely stunned and . . . truth be told , a little bit let down. I had heard a few Prince songs by that point and was becoming a fan but at first , his look turned me off. Think it was a combination of the fact that I grew up in a semi-tough neighborhood in Brooklyn , NY and this guy's look definitly did NOT go over very well out there. Plus , I was too young to understand the point he was trying to make with his look and what he was singing about. Luckily. the music was so great that I stuck with Prince until I was old enough to really get what he was all about.

On recommendation from a friend, I reluctantly bought Purple Rain on vinyl (for two dollars, with the poster intact).
Pouring over the artwork, I thought to myself "Here is the tackiest man who ever lived". This was two years ago. I now own 65 Prince recordings.

I heard Prince before I actually saw him, around '78, the radio was playing "Soft and Wet" but I always thought it was a girl, or a girl group. I remember the girls at my school talked about this guy named Prince , but I never saw who they were talking about until '79 when the album "Prince" came out... and I immediately had problems with his appearance. Dude's sportin' a Farah Fawcett hairdo on the front cover, and naked on a horse on the back. I laughed my ass off, thinkin' "man, "he" has issues!! the next year, the song "Uptown" hit the radio, and I was like, Yeah, Now that's cool! But then the Dirty Mind album came out...and that cover scared the Hell Outta me! especially the back... I backed away slowly, like "I don't know... this cat is out there!"...but by the next year, when I heard "Let's Work", and "Sexuality", I finally said "OK, AT this point, F**K it! I don't care if dude shows up naked with balloons on his head! I'm A Fan!!" The first time I saw him was probably on American Bandstand when he sang "I Wanna Be Your Lover". But the first time I saw and felt him was seeing "Purple Rain" for the first time. Like most girls at that time, it did something for me. I was a fan of the music but I really didn't appreciate it as I should have. I have more than made up for that now! HA!

I've got a kinda long nostalgic story about my first experience. I was only a few years old, barely old enough to remember. My parents could finally afford cable TV and they were flipping through the channels showing me for the first time what TV was like. They passed by the video for Cream playing and I saw a quick glimpse as they turned it off. However unfortunately brief my experience was, the image and the sound of his voice seemed to awaken something in my head. My parents yelled at me for even looking at the TV; they had nothing nice to say about him. They had all the wrong ideas. I was too young to even remember, but somehow I couldn't forget him.
Years later when I was 12, Gold came on the radio for the first time. I recognized the voice, finally found out his name and saved every penny I could get ahold of until I bought the album. It was the first CD I ever bought. I had to borrow my mom's CD player to listen to it, and I memorized every word of it that night. My parents tried to take it away from me. They tried repeatedly to destroy it; they honestly were convinced Prince was a devil-worshipping drug addict who wanted to corrupt everyone on Earth. I knew they were wrong and I fought to keep my CD. I'm 20 now, almost 21, and that same CD is sitting right here on the desk next to me. My parents have given up their battle. They didn't even say anything when I told them I was going to the Musicology concert. I've known Prince my whole life; I have tons of memories and they all start with The Gold Experience. I reject your reality and substitute my own.

I remember seeing him either in an ad or on television around 1980, I was 10 years old. I thought he was strange, but when I heard Controversy, I was hooked by his sound. I really began to appreciate his genius when I was 13 and Purple Rain took over. Ever since then he's been my favorite artist.....

The first time I saw Prince I was about 14 years old and I was at a friend's house and her parents had his "Prince" album and I took one look at that flowing hair and those eyes and I was hooked. That was 25 years ago and still going strong.

In 1983 I first saw him in the "Little Red Corvette" video. He didn't look like anyone else around and the time and it was amazing. While Dez was doing the solo and Prince dances across the floor does the splits, spins out of it and swiftly moves back across to the mic in what seemed like 5 seconds. Plus the way he kept looking into the camera with some kind of intensity after the guitar solo was interesting too. the first time i saw prince was when purple rain came out and i had to be about 2 or 3 years old so i have faint memories of it, all i know is when i got to be about 5 or 6 years old i always felt that it was a no-no movie for me to see, because my mom and dad always made me put my hands over my eyes during certain scenes that were "too adult" for me.
the first time i saw him in concert was this year at club black. it was the most liberating experience i had in my life, to see him in front of me, finally, i couldn't believe it, the thing i had waited most of my young life for. i wanted to scream, shout, and cry all at the same time when i finally saw him b4 my eyez, the way his voice sounded, the way he sung from his heart, oh my gosh it floored me...now that i'm going to see him again in d.c. in august, i can't wait, its really something to look forward to. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
