Curious: If you don't have "Sign O' The Times," are you listening to the version from "The Hits"? If so, you don't have the whole song. Get a copy of "SOTT" and prepare to be blown away by the full version. I swear, it transports you to another realm. Beware of listening to the guitar solo/breakdown while driving!

there's an alternate version "floating around" that was allegedly supposed to be part of the dream factory album - it's not quite as good as the version on SOTT - it's a bit choppy to me, and it doesn't flow quite right to my ears - but there is some additional instrumental stuff that makes it worth listening to.

I was surprised purusing those sample pages from Uptown's The Vault book that this song was first written back in 82 or 83, I think. Could there be a boot version that's that old floating around?

Of course, Prince played a new version during a few of the One Nite Alone soundchecks,
and at the 2002 Celebration. It's a bluesy version, and I was floored at how cool
it sounded when I first heard it at the celebration!
Of all the rumors about him releasing a CD of "re-recorded" hits the past few years, that's the one I would love to hear.
If it breaks when it bends, you better not put it in.

I have the dream Factory and it is basically the same song just the guitar solos are arranged differently. And there is a brief guitar intro, which is reallly nice, but really doesn't fit with the song. The real illness is Strange Relationship from DF with the sitar.

i coulda sworn there was a little bit of instrumental stuff in the DF version that's not in the SOTT version...maybe the solos are arranged in a way that plays tricks with my ears, i dunno...but yeah, in my opinion, the DF version doesn't work as well as what we're all used to.

there IS an elongated section in the DF version...it's sort of an extra buildup and it doesn't work as well as the edited SOTT version.
