why do prince cares so much about musicains not playing there own instruments every time prince does an interview he talks about other musicains not playing there own music .i feel like prince really should not care about that as long as he is makeing his music and playing .he should just feel so good about the fact that he is rare in todays world of music
a true talent and that he did not need computers and technolgy to succeed .that he made it by his own sweat and tears and yrs of hard work the new artist today cant do what he has done they to dam spoiled .and to bussy trying to look like a sex symbol to be concerned about being a true musicain as long as the image is right .they will make you sound decent enough to last one cd .the music industry has changed and the music is no good anymore i agree 100 percent with prince that hey uh theres just nothing really good to listen to anymore if you are just not a horny teenager trying to get your freak on. your just out of luck what about people who have gotten passed that stage and just want to hear something besides ludacris and a bunch of rappers rapping about hooking up with some nasty hoochie that shit gets old real fast.all i can say is prince you are no1 no one can touch you..your the real thing. | |

How could someone be a musician if they can't play their own instruments?
I think P's beef is that the music industry in no longer about music, it's about the business of making money. The heads of the big record labels were schooled in business and have no knowledge about music. The industry doesn't cultivate individuals that are actually musicians. How can anyone have an appreciate music if they don't know what music is. Most of the noise that is being passed off as music is totally void of any human element, especially in todays r&b music. One could go hours listening to r&b music and not hear one instrument. That means more profit for the record labels. No musician to pay. It's sad all the way around. | |

If I was an English teacher - I'd be rapping delectable's knuckles . . . can you say "spell check" ?? | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
maybe because the whole lip-synch/fake instruments approach really narrows the gap between a concert stage and a karaoke night? | |

Prince is a bit out of touch. Ther's not much sampling going on these days. Prince THOROUGHLY used sequencers and samplers throughout his career. Now, the level of musicinship is low due to lack of live instruments and laziness, but not really a lot of samples of other people's music, just sequenced parts. Sampling kinda went out in the late 90s. Where the record is concerned, who cares. Outkast proves that. When it comes to the LIVE show however, THAT is where it matters. The problem is not recreating the jams LIVE or at least making a different incarnation of the songs. Most artists do a sequenced "remix" or something. Some keep it real. A good example is D'Angelo's live version of Shit, Damn Motherfucker. The live version is much more powerful than the CD version. Unfortunately, D is the exception and not the rule. Unless its a big artist like Janet or Madonna or any old-skooler, sometimes its best to rent the DVD. Its a shame to ay, but for me it rings true. | |

I love it when people relatively new to the org crank out the topics like there's no tomorrow. I'm still digesting the ME ME ME topic. Seems like it was only yesterday...
And I doubt Prince is concerned about musicians who don't play their own instruments. Even Prince has played other people's instruments when he jumps onstage to jam with them. | |

Prince is a hypocrite really then, as most of his 80's output is programming on synths and drums etc..... way upto DandP and still some after (if not loads)! If anything Prince is to blame 4 the synth thing, he was one of the few pop artists who used it in a commercial way! He is one of a few who paved the way 4 other pop artists to do this! Take the minni sound 4 example.
Prince is showing off because he can play real instruments! Wow, that must mean u make good music then! Prince himself saying no good music around anymore sounds like an artist out of touch and guess what- he's whining again! He always whines 'bout something (since slave thing which was Prince being a dickhead)! Do u hear other artists complaining? No because they have a life! Prince stop whining, a good pop song is good whether real instruments r used or not! Prince proved this on "1999" over 20 years ago! Prince forgets where he came from..... | |

----- Don't you think Prince is talking about liping at live concerts and lots of rappers still sample or just re-create the music from some old RnB Jam. I really wonder about you sometimes. | |

prince is bullshiting though cos he always used to use drum machines live. and in the 90s, started to use samples on stage, along with triggered off backing vocals like rosie gaines for jam of the year and things like which was not too hot at all. | |

Prince forgets where he came from..... ----- He is talking about live performances. Damm get a clue !!!! Right. The thing is that Prince has and can do it all. Though I don't think he believes that everyone has to be at his level, there should be an attempt to be as good as you can be at what you do. Don't claim to be a musician if you don't even work on your singing ability and only rely on studio technology to get your vocals right. It IS a problem if music acts concentrate more on dance choreography than they do on arrangements. I am not knocking choreography, but I feel that you might as well watch a music video if that is your sole focus. I think there is relevance to what P is saying. Look at how many music programs have been cut out of schools. It shows that this is not as valued as it used to be in society. I do agree with change, which is why it was cool that P was able to embrace technology, and at the same time, maintain his skill on various instruments. I don't think he is being a hypocrite because that is not all he can do. He never said using technology was bad, its just that so many people rely on it to where it becomes a crutch. Take his acoustic sets for example. How many lip-synchers and mediocre musicians would be lost in concert without some of the technology they rely on. When you see Prince, he knows how everything should sound from adjusting levels to his microphone, to the sound he gets from his own instruments and everyone else in the band. Hell, I've seen that brotha direct the band to keep playing while he went up to an engineer and mixed the damned show himself because they kept fucking up the levels. | |

prince doesn't care. not really. he has never really worried about others but himself. but now
he needs to hook up with certain artists (reference group; give respect and get respect) to be liked by todays mainstream crowd. he just wants to sell an image of being "real".. and it sells! btw, if the artist is fine as hell (i.e. beyonce) then prince gives dick about her playing her own shit (not that beyonce is not a great talent, but still). i wouldn't either. don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
purple music does the same to my brain i'm high, so high | |

I really wonder about you sometimes. Sometimes, I'm not sure what the hell Prince is talking about. He's quite vague. And maybe you're a little out of touch, too. Out of all the songs on Billboard's R&B/Rap chart this week, the only song I see riddled with obvious samples and interpolations is his homegirl Beyonce's "Naughty Girl". LIKE I SAID, sampling old songs is OUT. Many of these lame rap producers have gotten so arrogant that they throw anything together and drop a good beat over it and sell it to the masses...who eat it up - and they don't have to worry about some old skool cat sueing for royalties. I don't disagree with the fact that there is a HUGE lack of GOOD musicianship these days. I just think the "I'm-going-to-school-everyone" approach doesn't work. Nobody (outside of his fans) gives a shit about what Prince thinks when it comes to the artists they like. Example: Kanye West is the hottest thing going right now. He's about 1/10th as talented, but is drumming up 10 times the sales Prince is. And that says WHAT? People like what he's doing. I don't personally care for him that much, but so be it. The people have spoken. Madonna & Janet put on a different kind of show than what Prince does. DIFFERENT. I think artists like Britney aspire to do THAT type of show rather than the singer in front of the band type show that Prince does. They are more theatrical and their shows feel more like a production/play rather than a band experience. Its a different kind of show. Why doesn't he have some of the talented young artists open up for him instead of hating on the less talented ones? That would be putting a positive foot forward in the struggle of bringing talent to light. Nope, he just wants eveyone to listen to him and do what he says---as always. | |
