The end of Under the Cherry Moon... in colour?

Hi!

In the Purple Rain dvd thread, someone mentioned that when they saw UTCM in the theatre, the Mountains video under the credits at the end was in colour, and s/he hoped the dvd would be so, unlike the vhs copies we all have.

Now, when I saw UTCM in the theatres back in '86, it was b&w through and through, though I've always wished it would turn to colour at that point, since in my opinion, the Mountains video had a really cool colour pallete.

So I'm asking YOU... when you saw Cherry Moon in the theatres, was it b&w at the end, or colour???

I seem to remember the ending in b/w, but I can't be sure. I've never seen it on color.

some versions of UTCM were entirely in colour.
That's how it was shot, and i believe a few prints were made in colour.

It was shot in colour but there was no release in colour... All I can remember from UTCM is that is was completely B&W even the end titles/"Mountains"... There will never be a colour release of UTCM...

No it's not. The version I have of the Mountains video is in COLOUR, however, Mountains at the end of UTCM is in black and white.

AFAIK only about 60 minutes of a rough cut is out and that's in colour...
I never heard of the complete colour thing ever getting out... And I doubt that it actually is out...

I saw it in the theatre (me and 2 other people), and I remember as clear as day that at the end it panned up to "heaven" and It turned color and the Mountains video played as the credits rolled. On the vhs it's black & white...but in theatre it was color. I know it.

In the theatre, the movie did turn into colour at the end. I can't remember the exact moment whether it was when Tricky returned to Miami, but the Mountains segment was definitely in colour.

I saw it at the theatre 3 times in 3 different cities and it was always B&W all the way through... I can't imagine there being two different release prints. I wonder if some of you aren't just remembering the color Mountains video and thinking it was also color at the end of UTCM.

Laser Disc is B&W all the way. I am thinking that the Mountains Vid may have chaged too, or been in color for MTV.

Neronava is right: the version I saw (at a pre-release showing) had the ending in color, specifically the Mountains performance. Perhaps it got changed for the general release and the video, but the first few prints with the color ending still got shown in SOME theaters. I doubt WB would see fit to recall those prints for just that part rather than circulate them to the theaters. (I doubt WB expected it to play in theaters very long...and they were right.)

Cool.

So obviously some saw it fully in b&w and some were lucky enough to see the colour ending.

I haven't seen the film, but can imagine how it might be effective after an entire film in b&w to have the ending in colour.

I'll watch it with all this other Prince on DVD stuff later this year. I've never seen Purple Rain either actually, but there's no rush. I'll get it soon enough. smile Why rush?

Thank you...that makes sense. I saw it when it first came out in SF. People keep talking about the laserdisc, VHS, I'm talking about the film version!! Thanks...

I saw it the first week in came out in LA and that one was completely B&W... I remember this cos the "Mountains" vid on TV was in colour and that struck me as weird back then...
But anyway, it's cool to hear that there's actually a different version out there then...

Mountains at the end of the movie is B&W, you admit to this, yet say it isn't. you wrote 2 sentences and contradicted yourself.

the mountains video and credits are two different things. you can't just lump them together in Lennon's post to dispute it and then seperate them to try to seem knowledgeable. if Lennon is talking about the credits then he is correct that it is in B&W and you can't say it isn't, and then say it is.
this message brought to you by logic.
