Really underrated album with some great tracks. The only let down is Old Friends 4 sale because the lyrics of the original version are so much better.
I love She Spoke 2 Me, When The Lights Go Down (great intro) and It's About That Walk. Extraordinary is a great ballad as well. if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

Really love the horns on 5 Women. I also really like There is lonely but I wish it wasn't
so short. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

I did also just the other day...I've been listening to it back to back......I think it's a very nice CD, I can listen to it straight through, There's a lot of nice jazzy instrumental parts for easy listening... I really like 'She Spoke 2 Me', 'There is Lonely', 'Old Frends 4 Sale', '5 women', but all the rest have good music too, I was surprised since I don't hear much talk about it, it became a favorite right away... There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Definitely an underrated album.
So many discard the music because they think it isn't a "real" album. I love it.

sonic said: ~Any storys behind the making of.....? Ta~~~ Many of the songs (actually, I think ALL of them, except for Old Friends 4 Sale) were culled from sessions that Prince recorded for the film "Do Anything", when the film was still to be a musical. Prince's involvement in the film came to an end when it was decided the film was to be a comedy. Other songs from this period include: Do Anything Be My Mirror Poor Little Bastard they can be found circulating on many different bootlegs. . I love She Spoke 2 Me, When The Lights Go Down (great intro) and It's About That Walk. Extraordinary is a great ballad as well. Co-sign on the Old Friends bit original was much better "If you really want something in this life, you have to work for it - Now quiet, they're about to announce the lottery numbers!"

Try here: http://half.ebay.com/cat/...&meta_id=2 The cheapest you can get from here is $8.99, from Wherehouse (good call, CalhounSq!!) - which is a fucking amazing price for this 4-CD set. Crystal Ball and The Truth are ESSENTIAL...go get 'em!!! No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

I remember when I bought the album I didn´t listen to any of the songs after 5 women for 14 days, because I couldn´t get over that. I kept listening to 5 women over and over again. I think that´s one of the greatest songs ever! "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

I like the style of jazz on The Vault better than the style on News.
I consider this album a definite artistic achievement for Prince. (These songs do seem half-finished but I treasure it for the mood and improvisation. It is a treasure to see Prince operate like this and hear him just talking between verses and making remarks to the band, even laughing ... I LOVE this album) : 1. The Rest of My Life (love the sheer positive energy and optimism of this song -- "I'm alive and that's reason enough for me to bust a smile ... today, today, is the best day of the rest of my life " .. ) 2. It's About that Walk (Prince at his flirtatious best! "oh, the prison I could do some time in if I ever go that ass alone." Love the lyrics, delivery, and playfulness of this song. And at the end he tells that girl she better run! 3. She Spoke to Me (nice song ... very mellow) 4. 5 Women (ok song. Everyone loves this. It's not my favorite. But i don't skip it). 5. When the Lights Go Down (no strong reaction to this song. But it's a good listen. Love the music) 6. My Little Pill (just a short, pseudo-song with personality like For You, Had U. I like it) 7. ** THERE IS LONELY (This is my absolute favorite song on the album. Whenever The Vault is playing and this comes on. I stop dead in my tracks. Great atmospheric, evocative song. He really conjures the essence of lonliness ... he talks about the world getting darker, lying down and dying, the world crumbling, . it's very telling that he then says how in HEAVEN will I ever be alright ... because it's clear the character in this song is feeling the void of God and goodness. Then for him to compare his state of lonely with what Cain felt after killing Abel. He feels like he has no brotherly kin in the world? Wow, such a powerful, short song, made even better when he lowers his vocal register to convey a deeper loneliness when he sings "there is lonely, and there is LONELY and then there is how I feel right now. As an artist who loves melancholy moments .. I really, really appreciate this song. 8. Old Friends 4 Sale - Sad, introspective song. I love the lyrics "one day a man took my picture and asked if I'd buy it, I said I guess I don't know how. Old Friends for sale, get'em while the getting is hot. But you better watch out they'll trick you until they get what you've got. and they'll show you the friends that they're not Old friends for sale. 9. Sarah. Fun, Fun, Fun song. I would say this is my second favorite, but I just can't rank these songs that i love. The music kicks ass. The lyrics are great. His confident, bold, playful attitude is clever as hell. I love the way he rolls the name Sarah in his throat when he delivers it. With lyrics like "that skirt ain't talkin' too long" how can you not love the song. My favorite verse is when he tells her to git her shit and go or Tina (Turner) won't be alone ... but then he laughs and expresses that he's not really trying to be violent he's just hurt cuz his heart is broken. The playful candor in that song is great. All lovers who've just broken up can relate to wanting the person you just lost expecially when you see them out and about town lookin good. You want to kiss them and push them away at the same time. 10. Extraordinary. Oh, what can I say about this beautiful song. It is the song that brought me back to Prince. When I decided to go hard-core Christian, i threw away my Prince catalog and anything else that could be considered impure or evil. (I had listened to him devoutly since I was 12 - 1983) So I missed out on Prince between 1994 and 1999. Then, one day whiile driving to Iowa (and after a very emotional break with organized religion due to philosophical differences), I could only get this adult easy listening station -- and they played EXTRAORDINARY. I was like, who is that, what is that, that sounds like Prince ... I knew his voice after all those years. I was like a drug addict getting her first hit in five years. I thought this is so amazingly and otherworldly beautiful. And I felt sad and missed Prince and the entire catalog. So, when I got back home, I spent over $500 buying all the Prince stuff they had at Best Buy. . The special niche in my heart for this album is obvious. I can't believe it didn't become I break-out release for him... but of course there was the rift with WB ... and they released it without him , trying to undercut Rave which was scheduled to drop just months later. (those bastards) anyway .. happy listening to you. [This message was edited Mon May 31 10:04:29 2004 by SynthiaRose]

Personally, I find "The Vault" to be far less exciting than, say, the B-sides disc on the Greatest Hits collection. In some ways, "The Vault" was meant to have a similar effect...it's a collection of Prince's work not "officially" released. We know that it was assembled as a means of fulfilling his contract obligations to Warner Bros., and I think the disc is lifted by our sense as fans of getting at some of that material we'd only read about.
As is always the case, some of those tracks existed in other, sometimes better forms. My problem with "The Vault" is that most of the tracks feel like little one-day studio experiments. There's not much unity to the album, short of the fact that they are all "vault" tracks (a criticism of "Crystal Ball" as well, though given it's larger selection, I have found much more to love there). I think "The Vault" has a bunch of nifty trifles on it, but it's not one of the first places I go when I want to listen to Prince. Nor is it bad. It' just kind of there for me. Keith/Kacey

I got the Vault recently too, i only listened to it once and wasn't that impressed. I actually listened to it again after reading your post and i like it a lot more. I don't think it would make my "best of list" but is showcases some great songs that kinda grow on you and creap up on you as opposed to the "instant classics". I think the thing that really bumed me out was the only track i heard b4 was "old friends 4 sale" original version, and i was expecting the whole record to be that good when as it turns out, not even "old friends 4 sale" on here is that good. Oh well, it's still a good solid CD for the completists, not every album has to be Great!!!

Keith/Kacey[/quote] Was it to fulfill contract?? Are you sure, wasn't he long out of his Warners deal by 1999, I mean that's way after Emancipation and Crystal Ball. I always thought Warners had the rights to those tracks cause they paid for the studio time and he was still under contract with them when they were recorded I viewed this CD as Warners attempt to cash in on some old P material that was sittin around that they happened to have the rights too.
