I rarely listen to this album (and I'd never listen to it outside of summertime), but when I do, I always enjoy it.
I just can't believe no one has mentioned the song I Will... Does nobody else like this one? I think it's one of the great, hidden Prince gems!

First, to preface my commentary...this is in no way whatsoever directed at anyone...just a general observation regarding music appreciation.
To answer the initial question...I like the album. I like the album enough that I listened to it twice a day (at least up to nearly the end of I Rock Therefore I am, cause thats how long it takes to get to work, and then home) for a week and a half. Onto my observation of music appreciation. Why does everyone (not just Prince fans, but since that's where we are, he'll be the example) feel compelled to critisize a musicians work? I mean, you either like it or you don't. Is there really a benefit to producing undue stress to conclude that in your own little world this song is A) over/under produced B) too rock, too funk, too soul, too whatever C) sounds too much like previous work D) doesn't sound enough like previous work E) all of the above F)none of the above. Regardless of your opinion on the production, or lack thereof, on any given song...it's not gonna change. Besides that, it's a representation of the artist that created it. If we were all given the luxury of twisting music/art/fashion into what we deemed it appropriate then no one would ever release any music, we wouldn't have art galleries, and shopping wouldn't be necessary. Anything needing creative value we could produce on our own whim. Simplisticly (is that a word?), we would all be Prince...in which case, Prince wouldn't be what he is....does this make any sense to anybody else? To reiterate...I'm not saying you can't dislike (ok, hate) a song. There are songs I don't like, so I don't listen to 'em. But I don't pick them apart and determine it would be a good song if it was "this"....because it isn't, and never will be "this". I think what I'm saying is, "You can't change the song. If you change the song, you change the man." .....OK Flame on

I'm a big Prince fan but certain CD's (emancipation, C&D, Rainbow Children, News) I just don't like or get. I ask people to point out to me what it is that they love about theses disks, cause i can't see it, and then I go back and listen with an open mind to try understand what i may be overlooking. Unfortunately, it's rare that i've changed my mind and i usually end up still feeling the same way. Ultimately, music is subjective and what i love you may hate and what i hate you may love

I like it, there are some good tracks on it
and even though a lot of people rate it amongst prince's weakest efforts...Prince's 'garbage' still beats the hell out of britney's or christina's best efforts It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

Christina's last record was great, Britney, I'm not as wild about, she's a little too disposable pop for me, but don't underestimate that Christina record

I think if you knew what went into writing and arranging an album with the great horn and drum parts of songs such as Right the Wrong and Same December, not to mention I Will, you might think differently. These parts are complex, not haphazard or thrown together randomly in any way. They take a lot of skill, knowledge and creativity to write.

CO-SIGN I think folks get stuck on the title contract-filler with this and other albums put out around this time. There are couple of songs on this cd I don't like, but this is a great cd by a tight funk-rock vers of the NPG, no doubt about it. I'm very glad Prince released this cd, the more, the better 4 expanding collection of Purple music. Don't u want to come , 3121. It's gonna be so much fun, 3121. That's where the party be, 3121. And while I like “rock” music and I enjoy Prince’s guitar playing, I’m just not feeling Prince’s TGE, Chaos and Disorder hard guitar sound. When the guitar playing supplements the funk, and is just one of many instruments, and not the is leading force of the song, I think Prince excels. But when, as is the case with “Chaos and Disorder” and “TGE,” Prince is making guitar heavy hard rock tunes it sounds uninspired, tuneless…like the shell of an average garage band. I agree with you on the lyrics...not a bad record thinking of lyrics alone, much better than the musically superior TRC. “Dig You Better Dead” and “Had You” are the only two songs I like…”Dinner with Dolores” is aight but it’s Prince in “Musicology” mode recycling past energy/melodies and sounding uninspired as a result. I have always liked "Chaos and Disorder" the most out of this "bizarre" period with the contract obligations and the name change, etc. I think in some ways I'm the exact opposite of 17ways...I like Prince the best when the guitar is prominent in the song. Interestingly enough, what 17ways and I share in common is that I also "come at Prince from a soul/funk direction," but for me, his guitar work is a highlight in that. Lots of people out there can manufacture a good groove. I don't think there's anything profound or lyrically exciting on "Chaos and Disorder," for sure. But the overall SOUND of the record, I thought, was invigorating. For me, it's WAAAAY better than "Come" or "Old Friends 4 Sale" or pretty much anything in the 90s except for "The Gold Experience," which was just way more focused and vital-sounding. Keith/Kacey

Chaos and Disorder isn't a soul/funk album. Ok that answers it. But in a song like "I Like it There" I will agree with you that doesn't sound inspired. Instead it sounds insanely constipated and much like "Damned If I Do" did and many debate that it should have been onboard C&D.
